I remember when this episode aired.
I was tunning in every sunday late night to catch every single episode and this just blew my mind
As a Puerto Rican, I felt seen. It had been soo long that any topic touched our political status with mainland US that when I saw this, a single tear rolled down my cheek. Not kiddint.
As someone who lives in Texas, I suspect others are more concerned about Puerto Rico and her people than you realize, even though the press seems only to report problems. In any event, Puerto Ricans have determined workers who rebuild the infrastructure time and again --you don't give up. And that's a good thing. 😇
Ahhh, 2015. When the term "Orange N@zi" referred to Fanta and not a certain former president...
Can you believe he can be president again? I shudder to think.
Oh, the good old days 😂
Hahahahah. What's crazy is the rednecks actually flat out admit they don't want territories to vote because they'd vote Democrat and that's so goddamn undemocratic even for the racist bible thumpers on the right
Could? Lol will @@LIFEOFSTUFFEDANIMALS
@@LIFEOFSTUFFEDANIMALSwhy do you shudder to think? Is thinking hard for you? Is that why you avoid thinking?
Here, in Australia, we've just heard a report that has found the same systemic racism among our police departments. Are racists and thugs inherently drawn to jobs like this?
Sadistic assholes like jobs where they get to lord power over other people. They get given a gun and the right to use it.
Yes.
Read up on the history of the police as a concept.
Their primary concern is to protect capital and maintain the status quo, not to protect and serve.
In the US it's the easiest way to make 6 figures. You get some money, power, and respect for the first time in your life and it must feel good. And anything must be done to protect that.
Well said
Jeff brings back memories. In 2016 Philip Morris lost arbitration against Uruguay and was ordered to pay Uruguay's expenses and the court's costs.
Fuck yeah, Uruguay!!
I absolutely love John Oliver.
Can we just appreciate that we get to watch all of these for free?
That’s your take away? And not the systematic racism? That your ok with?
@@madArt1981 are you ok?
@toebeee5168
No, he's not! He's trying really damn hard to build a strawman, and you are interrupting him!
But since Doc Fallacy has already been interrupted, allow me to interject a little something here as well:
The original commenter didn't even mention systemic racism or whether or not he is ok with it, so don't assume that he is. Calm down, pet a puppy, draw yourself a relaxing bubble bath, have some dip. Chill out, Mr. Why the Hell Aren't You All Going Bananas Over Systemic Racism?!!
Racism is obviously terrible and needs to go away but someone saying that he enjoys a free video doesn't mean he's a Nazi. Fanta, on the other hand...
Can you appreciate that we’re talking about how African Americans are being treated in this country. Funny how you glanced right over that. SMH
@@toebeee5168no, are you okay?? How in the hell did you get 20 thumbs up with that insensitive comment?? It just goes to show that people are not interested in fighting or stopping systematic racism. The status quo is fine with some people.
I think all of this is still a problem even though this show broadcast originally in 2015!
Why is all of this still a problem?!
#AmericanTerritoriesAreAmerican‼️
They deserve American Rights‼️
Absolutely! ❤
From Puerto Rico to John Oliver MUCH RESPECT!!🇵🇷🇺🇸👮♀️👩🚀
While you don’t get to vote for president, you also don’t pay federal income tax. How would the residents of Puerto Rico feel about having to pay federal income taxes? Most of the time privileges come with accompanying responsibilities. It’s worth considering the consequences of what you’re saying you want. If Puerto Rico really does want to have full voting rights and representation, they need to become a state and take on all the responsibilities that, that entails.
@@pjschmid2251shut up
@@pjschmid2251 puerto ricans have been dying fighting in your wars. If we are willing to die for the american flag, i think we are ok with paying taxes 😏
@morenia20 Amen! 🇵🇷 ❤ 🇺🇸 @pjschmid2251 Don't be that guy who gives opinions freely without personally knowing what you're talking about. Nobody likes a pretend know it all!
@@arelisgutierrez7448 I don’t believe I was giving opinions I was just stating that acquiring a vote requires becoming a state. It isn’t a quick process, it would take time and it would involve certain responsibilities on the part of the citizens of the new state. As Puerto Ricans decide which road they would like to take it’s important to consider all the advantages and disadvantages of being a state. Personally, I would welcome the addition of Puerto Rico as a state. But in the end, I would hope Puerto Ricans would be the ones making that decision. If you feel I stated any facts incorrectly, I welcome any clarifications you can offer but schoolyard taunts are really not helpful in the conversation.
“The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself”
I'm in Texas, history isn't over yet.
It's like Mark Twain said: "History doesn't repeat, but it often rhymes."
History needs to learn to shut up
Give all Americans the right to vote and representation in Congress, including our territories.
Of course give everyone the “right to vote” but ya gotta deal with the systemic racism first. That’s the reason people are being denied the right to vote. Just sayin’
@@LyonsM both are equally as important
Who would have thought we would be looking back on 2015 fondly?
You must be young. The world ended in 2001. Since then it's been WW3 spooling up.

@@Corsuwey The joke is that this episode is from like 9 years ago. Or maybe you knew that and are humble-bragging about your timeless looks xD
Israel didn’t change, the perception of them did.
I mean they *were* attacked... their response extending this long is indefensible.
@@mrchiefbs I think you may be missing the point. They've been doing this sort of thing long before Oct 7th. Our news just wasn't showing it, and realistically, they weren't showing this even after October 7th. As people found their own way to source the truth of the massacre, the news decided they should get in on the clicks, too. The fact that the New York Times still hasn't redacted their completely untrue October 7th article that helped launch the American support for the massacre is telling. We knew about Russia's invasion on Day 1 because the victims were white and looked like us.
@@mrchiefbsit didn’t start on October 7.
@@mrchiefbs I had a response for that. But apparently RUclips auto-deletes condemnations of war crimes.
Both are true. And Netanyahu and his cronies are responsible for the latter. I knew this was coming.
Israel changed significantly when Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by his own countrymen and only one person was convicted when so many were guilty.
As an Irish person, that statement made by PMI at 26:32 sounds a lot like the phrasing of some of our old Brehon laws, the national system of laws that Ireland used for centuries before we were colonised by England in 1167. For example, Ireland had the first copyright law that we know of. It was written "as to every cow its calf, to every book its copy".
So yeah it might have been an attempt to bastardise our ancestors' culture, which honestly feels about right for PMI
From 2015, but still very relevant.
Unfortunately 😢
watching all of these episodes and realizing basically nothing has changed in 9 years is fairly upsetting ngl
Can't believe this is still not fixed.
Which one? Fascist at home or abroad?
Crazy how extremely relevant all of these topics are....
Its a little too funny how that Volkswagen joke aged because they did release a nostalgic commercial and it was uncomfortable
.... Consider, Puerto Rico, ... an island measuring 100 miles by 33 miles has produced 9 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, and a multitude of other decorations of high distinction INCLUDING a Congressional Gold Medal honoring Puerto Rico's 65th Infantry Regiment for their role in the Korean War. .... Also consider, the first "American" shot fired at an enemy ship during WWI was fired at a German vessel from "El Morro" in San Juan ..... There have been Generals, Admirals, ... Scientists working in Antarctica and Astronauts in Space. ..... YET ..... When two devastating "back to back" hurricanes struck the island in 2017 - half the people on the mainland DID NOT KNOW Puerto Rico was part of the USA. ..... (PS: NINE months without electricity, ... a "Politician" threw paper towels and suggested trading Puerto Rico for Greenland ..... Also note, in 1984 the Reagan administration changed federal bankruptcy laws so that Puerto Rico could not file for Chapter 11.)
U.S. Territories should ABSOLUTELY have FULL voting rights!!! TY John!
I love that we have access to these episodes 💗
John Oliver is so perfect at this genre of political satire with comedy, it’s crazy to think that as a stand up comedian, it was highly improbable for him to make his way to this field via being hired to work on John Stewart.
A lot of credit to Jon Stewart for his mentorship ability. One of his greatest things he has done is share and teach others, and bring people up.
I love this lesson, in how phony, our clams of Equality, really are.
Americans are pumped with BS.
Before reading the comments, I thought this was an upload of a recent episode, not one from TWENTY FIFTEEN. I am genuinely speechless
The John Oliver Effect has always been wonderful. Bravo!
Russell's Javert catching strays is writing genius, lol.
Thank you John, for teaching me something new to me today. Thank you so much for bringing well researched knowledge and correct facts to ordinary Americans. I thank you on behalf of millions of people. Please keep up your invaluable service to USA. Like you I am a grateful immigrant too. Thank you so much.
While we keep revealing examples of systemic racism - members of Congress continue to send the message that since there are already laws in place outlawing racial and religious discrimination in hiring and work places - there is nothing more to do. In fact, they are working hard to reverse any measures universities, business and government agencies take to address inequality.🤔🤒
Out of all former Daily Show alumni, John Oliver has probably distinguished himself with some of the most politically insightful comedy since Jon Stewart to tackle the ongoing absurdity of not only the news but American politics and culture as well.
when y'all upload season 3, can you reverse the order of episodes so they play in order please 🙏
A study a few years ago showed that in Ferguson about 90% of jaywalking citations were given to Black residents. Other cities studied were a little less bad.

As weirdly phrased as it is, that legal argument comparing trademarks to dancing is actually pretty correct. Using a trademark is actually required in US law to keep said trademark.
Oh, in Ferguson just a few bad apples. I thought that excuse had vanished.
The overseas territories should all be admitted to the union without further delay.
I literally see no downside.
Can anyone name one?
Republicans will never let it happen, because the territories would probably vote blue. Same reason DC will never be the 51st state.
For the smaller territories (not Puerto Rico or DC) there would be the argument that they should not have two US Senators for so few people.
@@Spearca Heh, and should Wyoming...?
@@Spearca That's the whole idea of Senators- it's not supposed to be a representation of the population number. To help this make sense, Wyoming is our least populous state with a little over half a million people, while California is our most populous state with a little over 39 million people. Math it out, and Cali has 38.5 million MORE people than Wyoming - yet each state only has two Senators. Now, if you compare Wyoming's population with American Samoa's 43.5 thousand people, Wyoming has a bit more than half a million more people than American Samoa. The population difference for California & Wyoming is around 72 TIMES GREATER than the population difference between Wyoming & American Samoa. So if Wyoming has the same number of Senators as California, there is no reason American Samoa shouldn't have the same number of Senators as Wyoming- that number, by design, being exactly two.
@@TheREALJosephTurner I know how the Senate works. The men who originally wrote that compromise into the Constitution did not anticipate that the disparity between large and small states would ever get so large. Given that people do already complain about Wyoming and other dinky states, I'm just pointing out that it would be a problem for territories that are even smaller.
Love John Oliver!!!

Prime minister runs the show, president is ceremonial.
The UK has a prime minister and a royal. The USA in theory combined the two roles into one with the president but in practice the less interesting ceremonial stuff gets passed on to the vice president.
@@RedDiomedesall of them are awful at the ceremonial stuff, you’d figure being free from the responsibilities of power would actually generate charismatic individuals to take these jobs.

Grant statehood to these US territories 🇺🇸

It's to lessen the starch content and make the rice fluffier plus washing gets rid of something that makes it taste different (I don't remember the name, it's some oil I think)! If you like more sticky rice you can skip washing it.
i love that we’re still debating how useless & ubiquitously annoying daylight savings time is 😂

Our treatment of our territories is absolutely beneath contempt. I wonder what The Rock thinks of this???
I promise you he doesn't care.

As a swede daylight savings actually has a benefit of "giving" us more daylight during the winter which is much needed since its dark af and everybody gets depressed
Some things haven’t changed
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I have no hope for the territories... hell, residents of Washington DC are not even full American citizens as they don't have statehood. It's all so stupid, and intractable.
Unlike American Samoa they are least get to call themselves citizens, and vote.
American Samoans obviously need full citizenship. Puerto Rico and DC should be states.
The argument gets harder with the smaller territories.
@@Spearca YES and these issues seem so far away from ever getting resolved, as Congress is way too busy - they have things to do, like ogling Hunter's laptop and banning EVERYTHING u can think of.
Fun fact, Washington D.C. has a higher population than both Wyoming and Vermont? Maybe we shouldn't count them as states then if there's so few people there.
Edit: Puerto Rico has a higher population than 20 US states. What makes even makes a State a State?
@@katalina256 Residents of a territory can vote to apply for statehood. Congress can pass an act "enabling" them to write a state constitution, then vote again to admit the new state. President signs off.
DC and Puerto Rico have made applications. The act for DC passed the House but not the Senate. The act for PR hasn't been voted on.
The dude that wrote that law wouldnt be able to comprehend our rules or regulations cause we are so far in the future. By his own definition, he'd kinda fit the "alien culture that cant comprehend our laws" description and therefore, his words should no longer hold weight in court.

As someone who resides in the part of the world without it (Queensland, Australia), I have ALWAYS questioned. Why for Daylight Savings? It's especially mind boggling because because whilst I'm on the East Coast of Australia at 7pm. Adelaide who is Central Australia is half an hour AHEAD of me in time even though I am geographically "ahead" of it. Not to mention all the BS because I live close to the border of NSW who does observe Daylight Savings so when I go over the border (only an hour away), everything is messy AF. Can we all agree to be rid of it already please!?!
What are the odds that the "puerto Rican immigrant" line is due to Sinclair's ownership of most of the local news stations in America?
bruh, vegan cupcakes can be AMAZING. there are bakeries dedicated to them.
Living on islands Ive noticed an explosion of Fanta in the last "Six years!?"
This is only part of the story, I'd love to hear John talk about the US Maritime Act of 1920, and how it affected the economies of these territories. Are Hawaii and Alaska except from it? and when and for how long the US Congress has had to exempt some territories from its requirements. This is a very old argument yet no one cares about it except the citizens of these territories.
Puerto Rico should be an independent, sovereign state. ¡Punto!
I think they along with the rest of the territories should be given statehood.
I don't understand why Hawaii and other islands still are part of the United States, especially after hearing American samoa not becoming citizens, like...colonies shouldn't exist anymore.

Having the desire to vote but knowing you're going to be ignored? Sounds like every Presidential election, when the electoral college exists.
To be fair, most American Samoans don't want US citizenship because they don't want the Constitution to apply more than it does to preserve traditions related to land ownership and inheritance, etc.
