False. No one knows wether there was this thumb thing or not and the meaning is just assumed. Someone says it means "sheating the sword", while some others says it means "kill him". The only truth is there's no other evidence of the gesture but this painting of Jean-Leon-Gerome in late 1800, and the meaning is unknown.
I think there's a lot of genetic memory and basic instinct involved in sports, even blood sports. Humans are relatively weak creatures, compared to animals like tigers and lions etc, so we've evolved a very strong survival instinct. Combine that with a large brain, we developed tools to overcome our shortfalls. Small settlements bumped up against others and caused violent clashes, and then there's ego and jealousy. "His land is better than mine, so I want it" sort of thing. And there's leaders who by their very nature are egotistical and want more, so wars start. Sports are a way of managing those violent urges into something that doesn't hurt us. In the modern world that's competitive sports, but in the Roman world, which was far more violent, people wanted to see "someone else, anyone else" be killed.

Thumb down meant sheath your sword, thumb up meant send him to heaven

One of my favorite flicks!
The actual behind the scenes footage is about 5% of the video. A completely misleading title to be fair!
1% behind the scenes, 99% talk about irrelevant things.
The way the world is going I would have to say we are not to far away from a large areana and watching people die, very sad to say.
OUR planet is a huge arena.. think about it
Thumbs down actually meant 'let him live'. Thumbs up was death.
Not according to Ridley Scott.
He was wrong.
Actually, I heard that a jabbing thumb meant KILL while a palm placed over the other thumb meant SHEATH your sword.

@@chichi775 Yep, you're right. The thumbnail never showed up when I went to the video.

Well stated, especially the genetic memory.
A few do gooders would protest , but the tickets would sell out faster than an Oasis reunion concert
Oasis? Somebody is getting a bit old lol
Yeah? You should be one to be thrown to the Lions and Tigers and sword of Gladiator...
Why always behind the scenes there are only talking and talking and no scenes at all.
Totally agree. Totally misleading

Yea....behind the scenes with no scenes.
The people in those days and age did as they did because most did not have Jesus Christ as their LORD and Savior.
We fans want to see how they made the movie "Gladiator" and Ralf Moeller, the big guy, - and nothing else. Thumbs down!
Shlee
A LOT of gab... very LITTLE actual behind the scenes.....which is what it is supposed to be about...ACTION. Rubbish !!!😮😮😮😮
😅
Everything is so bland these days, they should bring back life and death blood sports.
They have! It’s called politics. Although at the moment it’s limited to the tiny nick on top of the ear.
What do you mean? Isn't Ukraine and Gaza enough for you?
