  • Now that you've got a Van Ert trap, it's time to catch some house sparrows and starlings. But if you've set it up and find that you're not catching anything, or these invasive birds have been reluctant, this video is going to take you through some helpful tips, suggestions and ways to troubleshoot any problems.
    IMPORTANT:
When using Van Ert traps, it is critical for the safety of all birds that you know important safety rules to prevent accidents and unintended harm. You can find critical safety rules here: • Van Ert Trap BIRD SAFE...
    WARNING:
One of the suggestions is to remove the orange sticker on the Van Ert Trap if house sparrows or starlings are reluctant to go in after you set your trap. HOWEVER, the orange sticker is a very important safety tool. It helps trappers easily see when the trap has sprung. Removing the sticker makes it hard to see if your trap has sprung and will usually require you to go outside and check up-close. Using a nest box camera also helps. Therefore after removing the orange sticker, please glue grassy material in its place to help you see if your trap has sprung. If you are a very seasoned bird trapper who is very vigilant about monitoring and are confident without all of that stuff - just be careful.
WHERE TO FIND A VAN ERT TRAP:
We don't recommend going to Amazon for Van Ert traps. Instead, go direct to the source: vanerttraps.com/
MAKE A CARDBOARD NEST BOX TRAP:
A handy tool for birders trying to control invasive species is to have decoy trap boxes. And if you don't want to spend a lot of money on another box, or spend the time making a wooden box, you can make a trap box out of cardboard. This is Nest Hollow's first video, so please forgive the quality, but it will give you some inspiration: • DIY Cardboard Sparrow ...
    WILDLIFE CONSERVATION:
This video is intended for wildlife conservation purposes. The idea of trapping house sparrows and starlings may seem cruel. However, in North America, these are in invasive species. They are not only birdfeeder nuisances, they regularly and fatally attack native North American songbirds. Their attacks impact wild bird populations. And therefore the populations of these nonnative invasive birds needs controlled.
WHAT TO DO WITH HOUSE SPARROWS AND STARLINGS AFTER YOU TRAP THEM:
After properly identifying a house sparrow or starling in your trap, they must be euthanized. Relocation is illegal and causes ecological problems in other places.
If you're not comfortable euthanizing these birds, there are a few indirect and passive approaches.
This resource explains different human methods as well as passive methods.

Sometimes I’ll put a little grease or something between the hook and the flap to help spring it.

That's a good idea. I might experiment with that a little bit. I do a lot of sewing, and I once had to oil the machine - well that was just a disaster. So it's made me a little hesitant on greasing anything after that. But Van Ert traps are cheaper than sewing machines, so if I screw it up - I'm only out $10.50 +shipping.

It should be fine. I just thought of plumber’s silicone grease that’s used for O-rings. The only thing the petroleum grease might do is dissolve the black paint.

You can always add a drop of vegetable, canola or olive oil, it works on my other critter traps that may be sensitive to petroleum oil.

Thank god i dont have any in FL....in texas i had too msny and killed many but used the elevator trap ❤❤❤❤❤

The elevator trap is a whole other science when it comes to trapping! I would get so frustrated sometimes. There's a lady who sets up nest boxes, and she doesn't care about the consequences. So she is just manufacturing house sparrows. Last year I had a trap out near by, but without a sparrow, it's really hard to catch a sparrow :(. I'm interested in exploring a taxidermy one as a decoy paired with a Bluetooth speaker playing their sounds. But I don't want to bring them to the area during nesting season. Come fall, I'll do bigger trappings.
If you're in Florida, then you've got yourself a whole wild world of invasive animals to deal with. That's too bad. But I imagine people in FL are more open to the idea of trapping invasive birds since it's wider known down there that invasive animals cause major problems.

Well done. I'm working on a group/flock of about 350 European Sparrows. After watching some of your videos, what would you suggest to handle that number of house sparrows? I'm thinking a combination of trap boxes as well as several multi-catch traps. I am in South Florida. They are currently nesting in Jasmine vines which are 2ft thick and along the south wall of a two story parking garage. Damages caused are droppings all over the "downtown" area and dust bathing along sidewalks creating more issues. Thank you in advance and keep up the awesome work👍👍

Funnel traps or repeating traps from sparrowtraps.net are great
It helps to keep a male and female sparrow as bait. I hate to say it like that. It sounds heinous, lol, but it is true. I keep mine in travel bird cages from petco. They are soooo great, and keep the birds from stressing out.
Clip the wings of your bait birds (just one side. There is a YT video on that somewhere). Then set it in the trap daily. The hope is that it will attract its own kind.
Bait with bread and crackers. And then be patient.
I've seen some people spend a whole season catching hundred.

Thank you! It doesn't sound heinous at all actually. It makes complete sense... not only are we trapping them by their hunger drive but also appealing to their comfort level and possibly sex drive. I will check out the link you sent. The last few days I've been building a trap that may or may not work but I'll find out. Typically, my scope is iguanas, bobcats, coyotes feral hogs etc. I'll follow up with my progress & results. Be well and stay safe👍

@@trapperjay9476 The mention of iguanas... do you live in Florida? I used to live down there. Florida has such an issue with invasive species. So thank you for working to manage it :)

@nesthollow5159 So my trapping mentor, an 82 year-old man, gave me the blueprints for a bird trap he used back in the day which was very successful. The only problem being i'm not sure what species he was trapping. So I built it and you can view it on my channel which doesn't have very many videos but just so you can check it out If you'd like. My only concern is that sparrows being a perching bird, I'm worried they can perch upside down to get back out of the holes.
