  • European House sparrows are an invasive species here in North America that have a negative impact on our native bird species. Species like our beloved Bluebirds and Purple Martins.
Sparrows outcompete and even kill our native birds for their nesting spots since they are cavity nesting birds. In this video I compare results of two different traps, a live rat trap and a Van Ert trap.
I also go through simple tips to help identify house sparrows so that no native birds accidentally pay the price if you decide to start trapping invasive birds as well.

I have watched house sparrows kill eastern bluebirds and take over the nest box. They use the little stick perch to stand on and kill the birds in the nest box. I learned that the only bird that needs the perch are the house sparrows. I removed the perches on my bird houses.

The only bird house I have a perch on is the one I put the Van Ert trap on because of that fact!

yes, I've got a family of eastern bluebirds right now and I watched a male house sparrow struggle to enter the box, mine doesnt have a perch either. I believe he was just checking the place out, but he got chased off by the bluebirds quick lol.

You need a mesh laundry bag, walmart, and stick the trap inside, close draw string. Then open the door. The laundry bag works over birdhouses with the Van Ert trap also. Birdhouse should be on a pole though.

No luck with the Van Ert traps just yet. I just keep catching Wrens. My success has been high powered air rifle ( Gamo 177 ) and a cage trap I made.
I submerge the trap in a barrel of water. Takes about 15 seconds. I hate the fact I have to clean up someone else's mess....😡

I forgot to mention your trap box should be on a pole

    Hear me out:
    - Feeder with a camera
    - Metal perch connected to high voltage
    - Remote switch
    - Large garbage can with one way door lid underneath
Watch camera, flip switch when house sparrows are on it, take out the trash. Eradicate dozens or hundreds in a day.
Would the DNR arrest me lol

Sounds awesome! I already have the feeder with a camera. I just need to be more educated on what exactly does a house sparrow look like. How close is it to our native species.

Why wouldn’t you put a bag around the box so they don’t escape

You get them out by filling the space with a towel or rag. 2:50

I started putting the pillow case I use for relocating snakes around it and they will fly into that.

@@invasivebrews I like that idea too, I think I will do that.

Why the gloves for a sparrow 😂😂😂 if you were dispatching them anyway shake the trap hard enough they are dead.
