  • "An Innocent Love" Melissa Sue Anderson, Frank Emfbo, 1982
    A boy attends college as a young teenager on an early entry program. He tutors an older girl and develops feelings for her which were not reciprocated. The boy also turns out for crew (rowing). Set at University of Washington, Seattle. The campus has changed significantly and, while not much of a film, it is a bit of a period piece UW graduates from the 70s and 80s might find amusing.

    I wanted to be in crew after watching this movie as a kid. When it came time to choose a high school, only one school in my area had crew and it was a private catholic all-boys school that my parents couldn't afford to send me. I went a different route altogether, joined the military after HS, etc. Once I got home and into college, the thought of joining crew at my local university was a thing of the past since I was pushing thirty and past my prime for such a sport. Also, I entered the university as a junior and the kids going into the varsity team had been rowing their whole lives.
    In the movie, you can see the old shell house during the university flyover during the movie intro at the four minute mark. To this day crew has been my favorite collegiate sport stemming from this movie. Crew has had a strong significance in Seattle and this is one of the few movies that features it.
    A few years ago, I was watching a golf game with a dearly departed friend of mine over cigars. He played Cal football before playing pro rugby. Anyway, I posed the question if he were to go back in time and redo college, what sport would you choose? He shrugged and asked me, I said crew. He opened his eyes wide and agreed. Also, told me how fully funded the crew program is at Cal - as after his pro retirement, he returned to coach varsity rugby and knew the nuances of how the school funded the sports programs. I miss that guy.
    It's a trip to rewatch the movie and watching a young Steve Bauer after Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

    Whenever someone guilt trips you into giving up your "passion and dreams" to be with them is definitely a red flag. I love how Harry is just being himself and knows who he is at his age. He inspires Molly, even though he knows that she is taken. Harry seems so grounded in the process, unlike Dunc. That dude is trouble! Back to watching the next half of this film! Thanks for posting!

    • @vernonfrance2974
      @vernonfrance2974 11 месяцев назад

      Dunc got over his anger and went to the airport to say goodbye to Molly. When he realized Harry was there too he dragged Harry out to the runway to say goodbye to Molly and he even gave Harry the gift that Molly got for him. Because Dunc did that he found out that Molly would never forget Harry. I think that proves Dunc was a great guy who just needed to mature emotionally. I imagine that Dunc and Harry enjoyed their shared rowing experience and Harry was grateful to become more well rounded. I imagine the two went on to have a lasting bromance.

    A feel good movie even though heartbreaking at times but this is life and reality and the age of youth and innocence, hence "An Innocent Love." Doug McKeon shines as Harry, a child prodigy who really hasn't experienced the true meaning of life yet...be sure to check out "On Golden Pond," a cinema classic where Doug co-stars with Hollywood legends Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda!

    My sister recorded this movie when it aired on TV and we watched it together a few days later. We watched Little House together and we were both fans of Anderson. The movie made a big impression on me because I had a strong interest in astronomy as a kid (and later) and I could relate with Doug's character. Second, I had a strong fascination with crew because of this movie and even attempted to join crew at my university but it didn't work out.

    A simple, but beautiful, film that captures the joys and pitfalls of "first love" perfectly. I must say I was shocked by how nonchalant Dunc was about Harry's attraction to Molly. But then again, he was determined to make sure she stayed (at any cost) while Harry gave Molly the courage to expand her wings and fly, figuratively speaking-even if that meant losing her.

    • @rocknroller77

      Dunc genuinely liked Harry because they actually did have a lot in common just different approaches to getting what they wanted. Dunc approached the teamwork aspect of winning a boat race. Harry was interested in the science of boating ie the resistance and the formulas. Dunc admitted that what Harry was talking about was interesting and was surprised that Harry took an interest in boating as a science to the point he read about it but Dunc lived it. Dunc TAUGHT Harry. It was good for Harry that he likes women. If Harry didn't like women then Dunc would dehumanize Harry. Dunc is a natural leader. He inspires confidence to win and he knows how to use it to make people lose too. Harry's mom is the only one who wants Molly to succeed at UCLA...so she doesn't return. Some of the distance between Harry's mom and her husband is because Harry's mom still thinks about Buddy Sherman and her husband knows it.

      Glad you liked it. I was on the staff of the UW Crew at this time and the scene where the guys are drinking beer in a tavern is inside a place called the Knarr Tavern (A Knarr is a Norwegian warship. At one time, it was owned by a Norwegian immigrant.) Anyhow, real estate has gone bonkers in Seattle and the piece of land where the Knarr was located was worth huge amounts of money now. A Washington oar had been put up on the wall back when this movie was made and one of our guys read that the tavern was going to be torn down. He went in and rescued the oar- the current owners didn't know any of the story behind it. The banner in the tavern that said "Emfbo" on it was rescued from the UW Athletic Dept. and is in another guys house. His wife allows it because she rowed at Washington, too. Because of all of this, I searched for a copy of the movie and found one from a seller on eBay from Greece (!) If you turned on the closed captions, the lines were printed at the bottom of the screen in Greek and the DVD box cover was in Greek. The boy was certainly thinking of someone other than himself because he respected what the girl was trying to do with her life and helped her even though it was going to break his heart. You are correct- the feelings were reciprocated and it was just one of those things that happens in college- even if you are only 14. Today, you might say he was "friend zoned". So, that's the whole story... ;)

    I watched this film for the first and last time on TV in the mid-90s. And ever since I remembered it. Each of us went through something similar. The film for teenagers, about the very first love, which rarely grows into something more, but it is still remembered for the rest of our lives.

    This is a nice little picture. It has a kind of late 70s JAMES AT 15 typed vibe that I think they were going for. Classic picture of this type that they don't make much anymore - unfortunately. I am not one of those who think all contemporary movies suck, in fact some are as great as any that have been made but they do tend to only deal in the darkest aspects of humanity and as such can be quite one sided. They err on the side of too much cynicism at times.

    It's interesting that Harry's parents believe Harry doesn't have enough time to tutor and earn money but he has enough time to be in a sport that doesn't pay. It is also interesting that Harry doesn't like sports but once you tell him he will get a reward, a Varsity letter, and an achievement of being the youngest to get a varsity letter, now he is all in. It is also noteworthy that at first Harry doesn't like sports but when Dunc is ruining it for everyone Harry is very concerned and trying his best to perform his function.

    The use of image stabilizing software here produces some really interesting results between the characters and background. Like this can be a new art form.
    The film as it originally was must have been very shakey and almost unwatchable.

    • @kidmack1121
      @kidmack1121 3 года назад +2

      I don't know but it's probably produced just for the film.
      That's the way it was back then with the network studios.
      Everything they needed for production was in-house; writers, musicians, electricians, chefs, wardrobing etc.
      1:34:35 YEP!
      There's the song, and the same name for the film's composer, and the song's title, vocalist/lyricist.
