A million years ago, I remember buying a Gaurder piston/piston head/cylinder upgrade kit for a TM M4 from one of the London rip-off shops at great expense and the piston head was forming an air seal with the cylinder before I fitted the o-ring. With the o-ring fitted, you’d have needed a Black & Decker motor to cycle it…
@ Very possibly. The kit was in a very shiny package and I went Full Gollum. It might well have been ment for a full length M16 using silly springs. Having watched your videos, I realise that I never actually fully appreciated the function of all the parts inside an AEG gearbox and just got really lucky by following the instructions of a couple of chaps that did.
@@NotALot-xm6gz Haha I used to head there, the staff and manager can be nice but the former tech there was miserable and the staff really don't know what they're talking about sometimes. All the aftermarket parts in the world won't make up for a crappy tech/workshop. It's like the people who throw in every single aftermarket thing and expect it to automatically be the absolute best.
Thats why i only upgrade the parts that need to be upgraded. Been running my cyma plat with stock gearbox except nozzle and etu + reshimming, works and seals just as good 150 000 shots later with 0 replaced parts.
Bad tolerances is why I bought a small lathe and milling machine. The trouble starts for me with aftermarket cylinders that are a bit too long to fit in any of my V2's and V3's. I like the portless Sinairsoft cylinders with their integrated heads, machined out of one piece of stainless steel. But, they are simply too long. Their diameters are just fine though. So, they go into my lathe and get a little quality time. I never encountered a piston that wouldn't slide nicely. But I'm not yet all that seasoned in airsoft tinkering, so perhaps I still may come across one.
OK... That's a new one on me, the piston not fitting the gearbox. The tier system is always infuriating g because it shows they aren't doing what works best for the customers requirements OR for the gun working the best it can. Drives me mad in everything. The idea of filing the gearbox blows my mind... I was taught modify the cheapest part. So the piston swap makes sense.
Yoo I just put the perun in my Aug. This Aug was upgraded like years ago by a shop. It has 13:1 gears and was shooting over 500fps. (I am in turkey, the field I played on allowed this at the time.) I cracked the GBX and honestly, the work done was really clean. The shimming was way too tight, I fixed that up it wasn't hard. But it has great air seal and is now shooting 350fps with .2s (I will not use .2s, I just Chrono with them because they're cheap and it gives me a ballpark idea of the joules) Perun AUG is an AWESOME ETU.
@wafflemeow126 I'm honestly so happy with this build. My main is a Kythera SR-25 DMR that shoots 1.8j~ I strictly use that with heavier BBs. And I recently had the idea to revive the Aug because it was just collecting dust, and it was my first airsoft gun (technically another A2 was, but I traded that A2 with a friend and got this as it's replacement) this one is that one ASG pro line A3 para (actually an A2 with a front rail system and a shitty mock surpressor) I have removed the surpressor, and now it's a CQB gun, the trigger response is so so close to my HPA gun and pistols it's really crazy. I am not running any short stroking because of the 407mm inner, and full size bore up cylinder. It's shooting consistently 1.1j .01+-
@@vulpix9210 Sr-25 is a beast! Would love to see your setups! I’m running a JG Aug newest edition with a phantom kit, 18:1, t238 39k motor, and 509mm 6.01 barrel putting out 1.69j. Huge smiles every time I look at it haha
@wafflemeow126 that sounds really good. AUGs also lend themselves well as a DMR due to the massive inner barrel not requiring you to make a massive gun, my SR-25 and Aug are both running 6.03 Prometheus barrels because that's the only good barrel available here in Turkey. Would've gone ZCI probably otherwise. And also if you did want it, you can go 13:1 gears, V3 boxes handle it great, and because of the Aug not needing a huge spring with a bore up cylinder it doesn't harm it at all. I currently have an ASG infinity 40k. But I really want to put a warhead or a t238 in it. I feel like that would cap the build off. Oh and both Sr and Aug are running 407mm barrels too
@@vulpix9210 I’ve tried 13:1 with the t238 set to 33k and honestly the rps felt too high. I kinda miss the old days of 8.4v NiCd batteries and awful rps which is why I stuck with 18:1 haha. I hope to visit your beautiful country someday! Thanks for your input!

I've never bothered with either the clips or a magnet tbh. I just feel it's unnecessary in 99% of cases. I do have a couple of jewellery tweezers on my bench that are a lifesaver in times like this though. They're sprung closed instead of open and they're great for holding all sorts of things while you work. Defo recommended.
Piston compatibility is usually my biggest issue. I like to test it by having the shimmed gears only in a otherwise empty gearbox and screw it together then take my piston itself (no head on it) and slip it through the cylinder slot and see how much play it has sliding it through the runners. I get the rear (first) tooth about where it would pick up on the sector then I manipulate the bevel till it starts to grab the piston and by hand try sliding the whole assembly back and forth. i can tell if the piston works with the gearbox and if the gears will work with where the piston sits ( some gears seem tighter against the piston some loose) It's a very low-risk test.

Those SHS pistons with the giant holes in the sides, and breaks in the runners have jammed in 2 different AEGs I have built. I wont use them at all now. Not bashing SHS, just those blue pistons.
That's because aeg gearboxes have different tolerances/dimensions. You can easily sand down the piston rails on the gearbox to make it fit and you won't have any jams afterwards
@@FrozenByFire3modify the cheapest component is the mantra for a reason. You don't want to end up with something where you need one specific thing or it won't work at all down the line when parts die.
