- In the summer of 2017, my sister and I embarked on an adventurous and budget-friendly trip from Stockholm to Singapore, with a detour to Mongolia. Opting for the cheapest flight from Singapore to Beijing with AirAsia, after a few days exploring Beijing with the company of our cousins, we decided to take the Trans-Mongolian railway to Mongolia.
Though I'm not entirely clear on the distinction between the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Siberian railways, it seems the former extends into Mongolia while the latter stays within Russian borders. The tickets were unbelievably affordable. The experience turned out to be exhilarating and novel, proving that spontaneous decisions can lead to unforgettable and eye-opening adventures.
Given my keen interest in history and regional studies, I spent much of the journey observing the diverse landscapes and cultures from the train window. Passing through Inner Mongolia, a region in China inhabited by ethnic Mongols, we spent a night in a town near the Mongolian border. The town reflected a fusion of Chinese and Mongolian influences, creating a fascinating blend of cultures. I documented the journey through photos and videos, though the quality suffered, as I captured everything on my iPhone 7 in 2017.
