    Excellent knife, I personally have one with AUS 8 steel. I've been using it for about 2 years and never put a drop of oil on it. I just sharpen it and put it in hot soapy water every couple of months to clean it. When I destroy it or lose it, I will buy a new one and that's it. The next one will probably be D2. AUS 8 turned out great, it didn't rust anywhere, and I take it camping, fishing, and use it regularly for food preparation and for all other tasks around the house.

      Actually I personally think the AUS 8 is a better steel for an outdoor knife as it is easier to sharpen. Thanks for sharing!

    Good review. That EDC pocket organizer appears to be made from vegetable-tanned leather. You can stretch that sort of leather by dampening it. It will not harm the leather, just soften it temporarily. When it dries, it will nicely mould to the shape and size of the knife. I work with leather and frequently "customize" leather goods to exactly fit various articles. This process is how leather holsters are made to snugly hug firearms.

    Everybody but me maybe???
    I never wanted to love a knife more. I'm a recent budget knife afficionado. The RAT2 was hyped on several youtube channels as the best thing since sliced bread. At the best, was a let down.i cushion that by saying I probably woulda loved the knife if I didn't have some others I really love. It has good steel and overall construction, but thats where it ends for me. It'll end up in my car as a beater. I like the look, the thinness and construction but it is far from a one hand intuitive knife like my other flippers that I thoroughly enjoy. This one takes some finess and smaller hand apparently. The clip is short and SUPER stiff. I got frustrated taking it out and putting in my pocket it was so tight. I was doing a project and basically just kept in fully in my pocket til my next use. It feels like itll wear out the jean material as well if i used this one a lot. For a budget friendly knife I'll buy other models of the Honeybadger or anything by Ganzo. The Ganzo Firebird FH91AND 41 in D2 with amazing flip action is $25 to $30 currently!!! Both Cheaper and more fun than this.

    I have an orange one so I don't lose it. I use it to cut bark around small trees while in the woods that way they die slowly and make habitat also. The bolts come loose on mine so I have to check it all the time. A drop of loctite would solve that problem.

    Knife isn't named after an animal.
    RAT stands for Randall's Adventure Training.
    Same guy who designed this also did some of the ESEE knives.

    This vs Ganzo 741 for value knife? (ofc ignoring price difference)

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  Год назад +2

      I think you have to compare the Rat 2 Aus 8 version to the Ganzo 741, which is 440C steel. Very comparable steels, but 440C is a bit harder (also harder to sharpen). 741 is a much longer blade at 3.5". This is 3", unless you compare it with the Rat 1. Ignoring price, I think the Rat 2 is a prettier knife with a more thought-out design. It think fit and finish is slightly better. For outdoor use, I personally favour the liner lock to the axis lock (no springs to break). If I had the choice and it was available, I would have bought the Aus 8 version I think. Easier to sharpen even though edge retention is not as good as D2. Between Rat 2 and 741, I personally would choose Rat 2.

    • @Jorigin
      @Jorigin Год назад +1

      @@urbanknifeguy you're right, I should be comparing it to the rat 1 in the Aus8. I really like the look of the sabre grind on the Ganzo 741 and the beak (?) the handle has at the pinky. I also don't like the offset look on the rat 1 blade. Basically I like the looks of the 741 better in every way. But I think I'm going to change to the rat 1 purely because of the liner locks ease of use. Thanks for the thought out reply.

    Good budget knives. It's kind of silly how they're being pushed as goat edc's with their lesser materials, questionable ergos (mostly the way the blade starts) and a liner lock.

    • @urbanknifeguy
      @urbanknifeguy  7 месяцев назад

      I think the key word is Budget. So within that price range, some knives seem to be more popular than others. But, while I understand why some really like the Rat 2, it's not for me.

      @@urbanknifeguy Don't get me wrong, there are budget knives I like. It's not around anymore but look up buck redpoint 753. Still had cheaper materials but it held up well and had the first iteration of benchmade's axis lock I'd ever seen. I felt like a wizard whipping it open and closed. Probably better than the rats for the price.
