Every time you are successful at this challenge, x seconds increases by 5. Not sure where to start. I'd say start at 15 seconds. See how long you can go without touching keyboard and still win. I'd say 2 minutes. Could allow for all workers to be put to gold mining before the "lag" kicks in. This challenge is from the old days of wc3 on dial up when my mom would pick up the phone and I couldn't do anything for about 15-20 seconds.
