  • Roshan Muhammed Salih interviews Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, one of the most prominent Sunni Muslim preachers in the West. For the very first time Dr Qadhi gives detailed explanations about his previously harsh rhetoric towards Shias and explains why he has changed his position. He talks about the wider sectarian tension within the Muslim community and the role of politics in fomenting that tension. And he discusses what the future relationship between Shias and Sunnis should be.
[Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, PhD, is the Dean of Academic Affairs at AlMaghrib Institute, the man behind the curriculum and other academically intensive programs like IlmSummit. Shaykh Yasir is known among his students for his excellent Tajweed in both Arabic and the English language (i.e. his perfect enunciation of every letter).
Shaykh Yasir graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences, completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah and a PhD in Religious Studies from Yale University.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi is a resident Scholar of Memphis Islamic Center. He is also a lecturer at Rhodes College, in the Department of Religious Studies.]

Agreed, Im a Sunni, my younger brother is a Shia, but we get along nicely. Alhamdulillah.
We even talked about Islamic stuffs and Tauhid and our Ahlaq and the sameness of Islam, and it proved, that it can worked. It should be worked. Live together in peace, continue learning untill the end, and yes, we need more wisdom and avoid unneccesary tension.

As a Shi’ite i appreciate Dr Qadhi. Though the history matters so much, and it should not be forgotten (in terms of the Shi’ite perspective) he is correct. People lost sight of wisdom and the hatred become stitched within the sects. That alone should be haram. It is also haram to worship a man, no matter how beautiful and wise and iconic he might have been (Imam Ali (as)).

      The 4th KHALIYFAH of the
      PROPHET (SAW) , was
indeed the best Iconic and Role Model in his time.
      By the time he had
become the IMAAM of the UMMAH he was already matured into a fully grown
      Lion, with wisdom,
      knowledge and experience
      garnered through decades
      of relationship,association,
companionship, and loyal and dedicated service to the best and the choicest
cream of Humanity the World had ever produced.
      It was unfortunate that
      at the time, malevolent
Individuals paid fully primed to cause dissension, division
      and bloodbath in the
      Society.
      There was no ,
      Religious, Ideological,
      Sectarian, or
political schism vying for leadership between the main protagonists at the time of the dispute were related one way of the other being members of a close knit community
      by their ancestral
      roots in Makkah.
When the 3rd KHALIYFAH of of
ISLAAM,UTHMAAN (RA) was about to be assassinated by a
      Mob of disgruntled citizens
      from afar away as the
realms of former Persian Empire,Iraq , Egypt and
some even from MADINAH itself Amir ALIY and his
      two sons guarded the
      KHALIYFAH from harm.
      When matters were at a
critical point, ALIY asked permission from to eliminate the leaders of the
mutiny and put an end to the strife. UTHMAAN refused, saying that he
would rather due than give the order
      for the spilling of blood
      of innocent Musliyms
who may be caught up in the turmoil. And he
      forthwith dismissed ALIY
      and his sons from their
      task.
      Seeing the cost clear, the
rioters who were surrounding the house of
      UTHMAAN raided in
      mass and slaughtered the
      KHALIYFAH, while he was
reading a copy of the QUR'AAN, of which he had
      contributed overwhelmingly in it's
      compilation and
      preservation. It is said that
the Masham was doused in his life blood.
      ALIY ascended to be
the undusputed 4th KHALIYFAH of the UMMAH.
And it was then that MUAAWIYAH BIN ABUW
      SUFYAAN, (RA) the Governor of
      the LAVANT , the first
      MUSLIYM AMIRAL BAHR
      (ADMIRAL), and
      Conqueror of CYPRUS,
      joined with AMR IBNOL
      AAS, the Musliym
      Commander in the
      ROMAN and PERSIAN
      Campaigns, CONQUEROR and GOVERNOR of
EGYPT were joined by several others to demand
blood due for the the death
      of their relative the late
      KHALIYFAH, UTHMAAN.
      At that particular time,
      ALIY was overwhelmed
      with the fluid situation.
      Attempting to calm the
      continuing rebellion and
preventing g it spread to the other parts of the realm.
      The dissension and
      conspiracy by the
      hidden followers of the
      past Roman, Persian and
other tribes who sensed blood and an opportunity to break off from ISLAAM
      and rebuild their lost glory,
      among others.
      ALIY asked for time to
      sort out the urgent matters
of the State, before he could venture on punitive
      expeditions.
The plaintive grew impatient and joining forces with others like
      minded openly rebelled
      against the KHALIYFAH
ALIY. ALIY met them with his army and there was no
      attempt by sober, wiser
      Senior members of the
      Swahabas of the
      PROPHET, for a
      reconciliation.
Whole this was going on overnight, a party from the
      Army of ALIY who later
      on transformed themselves into the
KHAWAARIYJ, the BREAKERS OFF ,incited and
      led by the heinous and
      recalcitrant and notorious miscreant,
      ABDULLAH IBN SABBAH,
      made an unprovoked and
      surprise attack on the
      armies of MUAWIYYAH
and his Allie. Pandemonium ensued and
it was everyone for himself. The peacd talks
had to be put off , until the
      atmosphere calmed down
      by the intervention of
dome elders. But many had been needlessly killed and
      bad blood had been shed
      between relatives and the
      stain on the ground would
      be hard to wipe off.

It's not about convincing the other sect that you are right. Sunni's will always believe Shia's are wrong, and Shia's will always believe Sunni's are wrong. The point is, don't kill other people over it. Don't be the first to raise your hand. That first act of violence leads to bloodshed for years, it's not worth it. If the fighting is already going on (which it is), as Sheikh Yasir Qadhi said, then we can't advise those people of what to do, because they are personally involved.

***** brother peace on you[Salam-o-alekum]...I am hapy to hear from you that one day so called shia and sunni will be united in future. words shia and sunni are not found in holy Quran and muslim and momin are present.God does not recognise shia or sunni. those terms wore brought into existence by some so called scholors who were more like politicians than scholors. so as long as common muslims follow them as their guides and leaders this division may remain. let common muslim start reading Quran with understanding and do research a little bit and words like shia and sunni will go into dust bin of history..

bigu236 My brother stop confusing yourself. There is one Islam. The shia were the ones who called those who follow the sunnah 'sunni'. When prophet talked about the sects that will emerge from the ummah, he said there will be 73 sects in this religion and 72 of these sects will be in Hell. The sahaba asked the prophet which is the one that will be saved? Then the prophet said the ones that follow what me and my companions are on (quran and sunnah). Who ever claims to be muslim but goes against the core teachings of the the quran and sunnah (such as the oneness of Allah) is NOT a muslim. Period.

@Skrooge Lantay ok but dont confuse the difference in madthabs with difference in aqeedah. The madthabs differ in matters of fiqh like what breaks wudu and whether hand are kept on the chest or belly during Saleh. Even if they differed in these matters, they did not just bring the interpretation out of their own pockets but was based off ahadith that were available to them at that time. Non of the different madthabs differed in terms of the oneness of Allah or whether the Quran was the word of Allah.

When Umar (ra) got angry about the Hudaybiya treaty and went to Abu Bakr (ra) to question him about the Prophet's (saw) decision, Abu Bakr the wise and most knowledgeable of the Companions said "He is the Messanger of Allah. He knows what he is doing". Meaning we do not question the Prophet (saw) at all. Zilch. Everything he did was from Allah who was guiding him. So if the Prophet was happy with Aisha (ra) when he died, then we are happy about her also, regardless of the fitnah that took place between the Companions. All that, proved that the Companions were mere humans. The best of humans, but still humans. Their sacrifice of Islam was much much bigger than the small mistakes they committed. We owe our Islam to them. Walaahi today we Muslims like to be sitting in our airconditioned rooms and be keyboard mujahids and scholars, but all of us put together we cannot match a single Companion's deed. Most of us can hardly pray our salats on time, let alone go to the majsid daily, we can hardly fast correctly without backbiting and talking laghwah, we hardly feel the pain of other Muslims, etc etc But we have the guts to say bad things about the Companions who were uprooted from the jahiliya culture they only knew and were made to fight their own blood and relatives in order to bring a new religion. How many of us today would have been on the right side of things back then when we can even perform our salats with focus and qushu.

    • @Aliameem
      @Aliameem 6 лет назад +2

abdul mohamed Mohammad ( PBUH ) said 'I am leaving behind Two Things of Equal Weight. The Qur'an and My Family. They will not leave each other until they reach the pool of Kauther (in heaven)." It means that The Qur'an and Mohammad ( PBUH ) ' s family would stay together for the whole of eternity. When Aisha waged a war against Ali (as) under the excuse that she was seeking revenge fir The Blood of Uthman , then she was waging a war against The Head of what remained of Mohammad ( PBUH ) ' s family. Because Imam Ali was the husband to Mohammad ( PBUH ) ' s daughter and father to Mohammad ( PBUH ) ' s grandchildren. According to The Hadith of The Prophet he had left The Qur'an with them, a Qur'an that would never leave them and The Family after them. Aisha fought THAT family. It is within the consideration of this view,, of what happened that differences arose between Muslim groupings . We cannot blame The Shi'as or The Sunnis today for their differences amongst each other, when greater and more serious differences existed all the way back then. The focus on obtaining a correct historical understanding , within the context of the issues pertaining to succession to Prophecy,;needs to be grasped BEFORE we A decide to pick up guns and blast each other. Mohammad ( PBUH ) asked for a paper & a pen on The Calamity of Thursday. Perhaps at that point some of The Companions realised that The Pen is indeed mightier than the Sword. Perhaps it was for that reason they denied it , in the same way they denied the Prophetic commandment for a Peace Treaty to be administered at Hudaybiyyah. Let us urge each other therefore , toward the Prophetic tradition of Scholarliness and Peace instead of hatred and war.

It's not about that "I" , my ego is right, it's about reflecting, searching for the truth and putting your humbleness into the field and saying "Allahualam" (God knows best), maybe he or she is right. It is absurd and ridiculous to fight each other at this day and age for no good reason. Let us be honest about it; it is about power and not about theology. And this ridiculous political conflict will go on and on if there is no dialogue between the two sects. If we want Islam to prevail in its peaceful teachings in the future we must start to talk to each other to eliminate this political war that exist in our religion.

We must never be "Communal Minded" in Life bec the Quran says in the 2nd Chapter : "Speak only the "most nicest n the most Good Words" to all types of people whether he maybe a 'Shia or a Christian' etc.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also told us that "Anger is from Shaitan" n Commanded us n his Companions "Never to get Angry" bec that leads to every type of "Sin n evil deed"....
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also told us: "Whoever believes in the "Day of Judgement" when all matters will be decided by the Best Judge (Allah), then let him "always speak the very Best Words or he or she should remain Silent"

As a (practicing) sunni Muslim I do not recognize shiism as a religion at all, their tenets are based on lies, fabrications and hypocrisy: does this allow for violence? Certainly not. For example, I denounce the killings of shia in Pakistan by the extremists of Taliban and their ilk. To get back on topic with Y. Qadhi's interview, let's say that he's trying to come out as a voice of moderation because he may have higher aspirations within the Muslim world organizations. But his change of discourse, while he knows all too well that shiism is a fraud, has been very disappointing.

And why did muawiya started a war against his own Khalifa please don't tell me it was a misstake, only a man who don't know whats halal and haram would start a war against his own Khalifa . And in that war there was a Sahaba of rasulallah called Ammar bin Yasir (as) who was on the army of Ali (as) and he was martyred by muawyias soldier so why would muawiya start a war against his own Khalifa that is one of biggest sin that muawiya did on his time he was responsible for the death of Sahaba of prophet (pbuh) and thousand of muslims.

    • @khumoyunakhmedov4562
      @khumoyunakhmedov4562 8 лет назад +2

Brother, it seems you do not have enough information on this history, Muawiya RA did not oppose Ali RA and his Khilafat, he (not just he all people of Sham) insisted to take revenge on the killers of Usman RA (because the wife of Usman RA sent Usman's RA blooded clothes to Muawiya RA indicating somebody should take revenge ) but Ali RA postponed the revenge (and I am agree with him on this) because the political environment was very sensitive to take Usman's RA revenge, but Muawiya RA and the people of Sham had another opinion but again "had never opposed Ali's RA Khilafat it was a just a matter of when to judge Usman's RA killer's. Now you can easily judge, but at that time the there was a great tension on who is right and who is wrong.

    • @AK5CP
      @AK5CP 8 лет назад

+Humoyun Ahmedov but still that dosen't gave Muawiya the right to start a war against his Khalifa even if osman was killed, you ignored that the Sahaba of prophet was on Ali's (as) army and they where killed by muawiya. Imagine if you were standing in a battlefield and in front of you it was
Ali ibn Abi-Taleb, Khuzaima ibn Thabit, Hashim ibn Utbah (Peace be upon them) all of them was Sahaba of rasulallah if you have a little respect to prophet muhammad (pbuh) you would not fight against those people no matter if it was political tension or whatever.
Prophet MUhammad (pbuh) has Said to Ammar, "you Will be killed by a group of transgressors" and he was killed by Muawiya wich means muawiya was wrong and what he did was a awful act. And if you have a answer pls answer that. This is on of the reasons why shia muslims don't show respect towards Muawiya and the battle of siffin is a strong evidence and aisha was wrong to for fighting against Ali ibn Abi-Taleb (as).

    • @khumoyunakhmedov4562

+AK5CP yes brother you are right, but as you told Prophet sav actually predicted this and nobody knew who was right and who was wrong before battle, and after Ammar RA was killed the war was stopped and Muawiya accepted that he was wrong, but still in any case Muawiya was also a great sahabiy, and in his side also there were a lot of great sahaba, the problem is there was no Prophet sav to tell who is right and who is wrong because only he knew the truth, but others were just simple people although they were great Sahabi, everybody can make mistake. If you want to know my opinion on this, Ali RA was right, but this does not give right to blame another great Sahabi, Muawiya. We cannot blame him, leave this on Allah's justice

You cant say i Love Allah and eblis that is nonsens!, there is no way in hell i would chose someone else ecept Ali ibn Abi-Taleb (as) after prophet muhammad (pbuh), prophet Muhammad said "I am leaving among you two things QURAN and my AHLE BAIT". Brother this hadith i have not made up this on sunni books and shia books.

Shi'ism isn't Islam according to Al-Qur'an and Sunnah period! And they anointed the Imams they have chosen 12 to infallibility status level to Allah Himself. They believe the Imams such as Ali, Hassan, Husain, Baqir, Jafar and others hold the attribute Al-Qadus which means in English perfect, and holy... They are from the birth of the Mu'tazzilites whom also held that same doctrine Allah's names can be associated with his creation. Shi'ism doctrine is kufr and they should not be excepted as Muslims according to the Al-Quran and Sunnah. Plus they curse the Sahaba whom Allah is pleased with, and lie on the great Imams just like the so called Christians did with Isa aka Jesus (as) teachings.

The theology of twelver shia islam is very close to the theology of mainstream sunni islam. There is not much bigger difference other than what people like you try to exaggerate. They believe in Allah's unity, day of judgement, pre-ordainment, prophethood, revelation, and angels. This is the criteria for one to be a muslim in traditional sense.
Whilst they do hold that their imams have special abilities and qualities I don't think it is much bigger issue here, since we know that people who are close to Allah get those kind of qualities and abilities. And its not alien to sunni Islam either. You need to check what makes things islamic or unislamic. You are very mistaken, and Mutazzilites are not 100% erroneous in their theology. There is good stuff in that sect too. Asharism and Maturidism somewhat has a little mutuzalism and Asharism and Maturidism are considered mainstream sunni sect. Shia and Mutazzilites are not same, but yes, they are similar, so there is this difference.

And as to the cursing of prophet (s.a.w) sahaba (r.a) I don't think it makes them disbeliever[note that I don't support cursing or extra praising anyone except Allah and prophet]. Cursing them is a innovation, and Allah knows best. I also think that sunni Islam also needs to check what is a companion. I don't think someone who met prophet (s.a.w) and died a muslim fits the criteria for his companionship. They should fall in the category of acquaintance not companions. I don't know who declared all of them companions.
We need reformists, and I don't like people who are closed minded. Most of sunnis and shias are closed minded which I've met online and offline. Open your heart and stop fighting over these puny issues.

Salam. I am glad about this great interview and I am so glad to see Shaykh Yasir Qadhi perhaps become more moderate in his stances. I did notice however, that towards the end of the interview he repeats the typical mantra about the "MOTHERS" of the believers - when the large majority of the wives of the Prophet are respected by ALL MUSLIMS!! In contrast, even the Quran talks about some of Wives of the Prophet in negative terms to the point of threatening them with divorce. Clearly, they had NOT YET caused the death of any companions of the Prophet, nor caused bloodshed between Muslims at a seminal stage in the history of Islam and create the first FITNA among Muslims. Yet Allah's tone in the Quran is not exactly complimentary towards them nor are they given cart-blanch to do evil, even before a single Muslim was killed through their actions. We all know there is one single wife among the wives of the Prophet who is especially loved by many Muslims, when she is the more controversial and a particularly divisive figure, by causing the deaths of "THOUSANDS" of her own "CHILDREN" including many HUFFAZ and companions of the Prophet, and the vast majority of the Muslims want to completely ignore the rules given in the Quran, with regard to doubling of blessings or punishments that Allah allocates for those among the wives of the Prophet who do good or cause evil. Why is there this special attachment to the one wife who caused so much Muslim & Companion blood to flow? Most wives of the Prophet are completely honored, loved and respected by ALL Muslims, including the very daughter of Abu Sufyan himself, who fought the Prophet himself in battles and caused much destruction. Why is there this special attachment to that one wife who attacks that one special companion of the Prophet and universally accepted as AHLUL BAYT, who is ALSO accepted by all Muslims universally as their collective Amir-ul-Momineen. There is a clear double standard and hypocrisy, that many Muslims defend people who caused the death of the SAHABA by the hundreds on one side but are ready to kill people who wish to disassociate themselves from that WIFE and those SAHABA who divided the Muslim community or shed the blood of other SAHABA and even some of the immediate family members of the Prophet himself. It is a point to ponder for a fair minded Muslim to be just. Ali

May Allah swt preserve the sheikh. It's rare to see someone with Islamic, western credentials yet wise on many matters.
Ignorant and arrogant Muslims push one of the 2 extremes. Always beware of such people because you will find some learned people among them, but there emotions let them down.
The sheikh has navigated this beautifully, me and you are not the judges, only Allah is, speaking in generality anyone who says the Kalima, believes in the main tenets of Islaam is a Muslim unless and until something in an individual's beliefs contradict a main principle of Islam.
Walk the middle path and let the scholars discuss complex issues of theology.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan. Allahumma Salli Ala Muhammad Wa Ale Muhammad. Grave injustice to Ahlul Bait
Indeed, if the Successor is not Divinely appointed, who will undertake the legitimate leadership of the Deen and the Ummah? How strange that they denied the Messenger of Allah SAS the right to appoint his SAS's Successor, but they appointed theirs?
Saqifah bani Saidah, a really dark day in early Islam: conspiracy against Ahlul Bait: Ali, Fatima and their children, Hasan and Husain AS. It was clear by several undisputed evidence and based on outstanding merits, Ali Ibn Abu Talib AS was the only intended and desired Successor - Khalifa after his SAS's death - as determined by the Messenger of Allah SAS himself on numerous occasions.
Mainstream Islamic Scholars purposely try hide the truth from the general Ummah in order to deny 'Ali bin Talib AS the Most Qualified, Competent and Natural Rightful Successor after the death of the Messenger of Allah SAS. They strenuously try to defend, promote and propagate the status quo. Yet, some of the most meritorious, indisputably prominent and distinguished characteristics and status of Ali AS over and above ALL the other Sahabas can be prominently highlighted as follows:
    1. Ali AS was brought up in the household of the Prophet SAS from the tender age of 10 when the Prophet SAS was then 30 years old, 10 years before Revelation and never worshipped idols, unlike the rest of the Sahabas.
    2. Dawatul Ashira - 609 when Ali AS was the first male at 23 years old who openly declared acceptance of Islam directly to Prophet SAS, while the other paternal blood relatives declined. Refer to 26:214. The Prophet SAS then referred to him as "Akhi", "Wasi" and "Khalifa".
    3. Lailat Mabit - 622 when Ali AS readily and happily risked his life for the Prophet SAS by agreeing to sleep in his SAS's bed for the Hijrah, at the assasination plot to kill the Prophet SAS by the tribesmen. Refer to 2:207.
    4. On the Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah, the Prophet SAS left Ali AS in charge of executing the Amana by returning the valuable possessions of some Makkans kept with the Prophet SAS back to the people as a Sacred Trust.
    5. The Prophet SAS then gave Ali AS another Sacred Trust to take the three Fatimas - Fatima Zahara AS, his own mother Fatima and Fatima, daughter of Hamza safely to join the Prophet SAS in Madinah and single-handedly valiantly fought off attackers on the journey.
    6. A few months upon arrival in Madinah, the Prophet SAS ordered the Muhajireen to each choose an Ansar as his brother to cement brotherhood, but he did not request Ali AS to do so. Neither did the Prophet SAS himself do likewise. Instead, he SAS held Ali AS's hand and declared him as his SAS brother to affirm their special and unique relationship in this world and the Hereafter. Refer to 59:9.
    7. Marriage to Fatima AS - 624 when Ali AS was choosen to marry the daughter of the Prophet SAS, while Abu Bakr and Umar RA were refused. Ali AS was the paternal cousin of the Prophet SAS, son-in-law and closest confidante and their house was the only door left open to Masjid Nabawi when all others were ordered closed.
    8. Battle of Badr - 624 when Ali AS put down more of the enemies than any other from among the 313 ill equipped Muslims against some 1,000 strong and better equipped enemies of Makkah.
    9. Battle of Khaibar - 629 when Ali AS brought an astounding victory to the Prophet SAS. After Abu Bakr and Umar RA failed to do so before him on two separate attempts, the Prophet SAS made an amazing statement: "Tomorrow Allah will send a man who loves Allah and His Prophet and Allah and His Prophet love him too. He will deliver Khaibar to me."
    10. Battle of Hunain - 630 when the army of 12,000 fled the arrows in the valley by the Hawazin and Thaqif of 24,000 strong against the Prophet SAS, while only 8 distinguished Companions remained with the Prophet SAS, not including neither Abu Bakr, Umar nor Uthman RA. Ali AS brought final victory to him SAS at Hunain.
    11. Ghazwat Tabuk - 630 when the Prophet SAS left Ali AS in charge of Madinah and likened him to himself SAS as Aron was to Moses AS as Nabi and Successor. Refer to 13:7.
    12. Ghadeer Khumm - 632 on the 18th of Zul Hijjah after the Farewell Hajj, when the Prophet SAS explicitly and publicly declared Ali AS his SAS's Successor and those present openly congratulated him, including Abu Bakr and Umar RA.
    13. Mubahala - 632 when the Prophet SAS entered into Divine Curse with the Christians of Najran to prove the Truth. The Prophet SAS took along with himself only Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husain AS as his family to confront the Christians. Refer 3:61.
    14. Kisa - 632 when the Prophet SAS took only Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husain AS under his cloak at the Revelation of Ayat Tathir, 33:33, as the only members of Ahlul Bait. He excluded others even though it happened in the house of Umm Salama RA who expressly requested to be included.
    15. This highlights the superiority of Ali AS over all the other Sahabas, when the Prophet SAS declared: "I am the City of Knowledge and Ali is the Gate."
    16. Consider why the Prophet SAS, at his death bed, when he SAS ordered everyone, including Abu Bakr and Umar RA who refused to join Usama bin Zaid's Army against the Romans but particularly insisted that only Ali Ibn Abu Talib AS alone should remain with him SAS in Madinah.
