    I'm a fan of untunable whistles because of my favorite dad joke.

      I just purchased one as well because of this review. I went to Scotland recently and bought a Glenluce plastic d whistle and I fell in love playing it. However, it's so hard to play the higher octaves and I wanted something with more potential. Thanks @CutiePie for the recommendation!

    I have one of the very early styles of this whistle with the brass tuning slide as well and absolutely adore it. And I’ve had MANY various names like O’Riordan, Sindt, Burke, etc... I too think my main draw to this whistle is the lower volume for practicing as well as just being a bit larger diameter due to my long fingers. You mentioned the shiny spots around the keys over time... I occasionally go over the whistle with a dry “magic eraser” and I instantly have that matte finish which I visually prefer.

    I have just received one of these on the strength of this review. Really like it, and I can see why Stephanie likes it too As for 'making friends' with the whistle, there was no need as it is very easy and lovely to play. I am not a total newbie, but have limited experience with one or two other whistles. This one will be played more than any ( although I am waiting for a Sweet Brass later in the year).

    Hi! Enjoyed this review immensely. I play this same Dixon model on stage, have used it in the studio many times and it's my staple whistle on tour for festival shows because it's so reliable.
    I've even managed to play it outdoors in the wind by using a trick an old-timer showed me - turn the head around 180 degrees so that the ripple is facing down! Yes, the mouthpiece feels a bit odd that way, but it beats having the wind steal your sound.
    PS-loved your ornaments video! I now use a couple of new ones thanks to you.

      Hi David! I play outside with my Oak High D nickel whistle because the walls in my high-rise apartment bldg are very thin. Even if they say the Dixon DX005 is quiet... I like to play loud since I play outside only. If you play in the second octave, like you do outdoors, does it carry very far? I have a lot of stories of people I've made very happy, and at times told me so. An example is I played on a long fishing dock when of course it was late and all the fisher-people and the dock long enough I didn't bother people hiking around the lake that's all a city park in Minneapolis. People look very tiny on the far end. On a map it seems about 7 1/2 city blocks long, so about 3/4 mile. I played for about an hour, then walked down the dock to leave and two young guys, teens, were sitting on a park bench. They said they heard me on the far end and came to my end of the lake to listen! So my oak whistle could be heard 3/4 mile! With your outdoor experience, would the Dixon carry a lot shorter distance?

      I have Dixon whistles, I prefer them. In fact I needed a food High D abd I just had a Tony Dixon high D tunable aluminium DX006. I couldn't put it down for hours! It is nice and clear and loud. Though I could play the first octive quieter and it did not change the clarity. But to go into the 2nd, it is loud! I think this whistle would be heard 3¼ of a mile away, definitely. Even if it was not over water, (which carries sound amazingly). But talk abouut playing outside. I play my trumpet outside sometimes. I live in the west of Ireland in Mayo. I think the cows and all the sheep and farmers might like it.. well I hope! (;

    Original Tony Dixon DX005D Whistle - Handmade in England
    The Dixon DX005D has all the characteristics of the DX004D with the added advantages of being very sleek.
    The addition of the handmade brass tuning slide not only allows for smooth comfortable tuning but offers a subtle sharpness to the tone.
    As Tony Dixon says, the DX005D is a modern take on tradition, suitable for all ages and abilities.
    Retails for $44.95 (US) and free shipping on Amazon.
    I think it would be suitable for public performances too, and not just for "home, practice and personal use." 😉 ♫

    I respect your opinions. You have taught yourself, you play by ear, you listen to and experience the music like I do. I got a Dixon dx005.
    Any advice for a beginner who has started to experience the fact that I can play music now without thinking about moving my fingers over individual holes? It feels odd and out of control. I think now in 3’s,2’s, 1’s evens and odds. I make up little stories like this “1little lifts up, down then goes with the flow...2, 2, 2” I think that certain notes sound more “Irish” if I start and stop with it. I’m getting the feeling of major, minor and how to flip back and forth. Does this sound familiar?

    Thanks very much for this review. I went ahead and bought one of these DX005 a couple of moths ago and it sounds great, nice and warm and in good tune all the way up the scale it has rendered all my other (cheap) whistles redundant. It sounds better and is easier to play than anything else I have, worth every penny.
    Out of interest I later bought a DX001 which doesn't have the tuning slide and is a good deal cheaper at £15 with a nice white ring around the bottom of the pipe and to be quite honest its a bit rubbish when compared, all the notes in the second octave sound a little off compared to the more accurate DX005.

    I've only owned the lowest cost about $10 or $15 whistles, so this is my possible upgrade. I'm just wondering why brass? You pay more for the tunable brass slide as opposed to the Dixon whistle that is tunable but not with a brass slide. Thanks for a very nice review and talented sample songs!

    • @Ella-49
      @Ella-49 Год назад

      @@kddayth No KD Day there is actually no comparison with playing the tin whistle with a regular flute. The comparison I was making is that the sound of the Tony Dixon whistle is a flute like sound that many tin whistles do not have, especially the metal ones. I prefer the sound of the polycarbon whistles. There are several advantages that flute players have when learning the whistle and one is breath control by using the breath for sustaining and adding color to the notes and another is the ability to remember the song notes using brain muscle memory, if that makes sense.

      I found the Dixon quite difficult to play for a while, it took a lot of getting used to. I knew as soon as it arrived we'd eventually be friends, but it wasn't an immediate wonder whistle for me, it took effort! The Clarke original was my second whistle, after a generation, so I'd have to recommend that. It helps you learn the basics of good breath control that is quite valuable further down the line :) get a D though, the Clarke C is a tough cookie.

      If you're considering the Dixon DX005 and the MKpro they are two very different whistles and not really something you can choose between...for a start one's low and one's high, so it depends whether you want to play low or high whistle... Also price, this one is £35 the MKpro is £250... If you're new to tin whistle i'd definitely start with a high whistle though 😊

    I am an old, and perennial beginner with the whistle, sadly. I also have small hands and read elsewhere that this whistle, while being easy to play and having great sound, does have large finger bores more suited for large hands. I noticed you didn't mention this feature. So, are the finger bores possibly too large for very small hands? Appreciate this review and so enjoy all of your instruction videos. You are a delight!

      I wouldn't suggest this whistle was very large. It's a pretty standard sized whistle so should be perfectly suitable for small hands.

    Many thanks for your advice. I have ordered the Clarke original. I did order a Dixon low d but I couldn’t play it. I have read lots of chat about small hands etc. And encouraging players to use the pipers grip and persevere. However I have come across the man in the USA susato who does a Kildare option that has a key on the last hole for all the low whistles. Would it still be tricky to play? I was wondering if a low f would be easier to play but then I was wondering if you need to play different notes etc to play the music I been playing on my high D.

      Most low whistles will require a Piper's grip, I even use it on my Bb Susato, but I've never tried one with keys, so I wouldn't know if it would be difficult to play or not.

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle

      You might find you need a lot of air to hit some of the notes on the Clarke original, and not much air at all to hit others. For that reason it can sometimes be difficult to play for beginners, but definitely sounds sweeter than Walton's whistles.

    Are there any benefits to having a tunable whistle vs. nontunable? Is it that you can tune to other keys (like move it from high D to high C), or is it just an added feature that allows you to finely adjust the exact tuning to high D or somewhere near there if you're playing with others who are out of tune? Thanks!

    Thank you for showing us your new addition. At 5m 20s you mentioned that you had to get used to playing this whistle "properly and reference the "amount of air you need to put into the whistle to the the best out of it" but then you also say it "doesn't require a lot of air" and is easy to play. - - this confused me. Can you please elaborate? I would think less air requirements would make it easier to play. Thanks.

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your questions. Essentially you need a lot more experience of breath control to play whistles that require less air :) That's because they are more sensitive to the amount of air you blow through them. Beginners often don't know how to control the amount of air they put into a whistle and have a tenancy to over blow (blow too hard) which pushes the whistle into the second octave unintentionally. Whistles that require less air (like this one) push into the second octave more easily, so you need a VERY small amount of air to stay in the low octave, and too much air will push it into the second octave when you don't want o be there, and sometimes even into the third octave (and will basically make it squeak loudly and horribly.)
      In general, it's easy to play, with regard to the amount of air you need - you don't have to have a gigantic lung capacity to reach the super high notes, which allows you to play for longer periods without needing to gasp for air. BUT, you do need to have GOOD breath control, in order to be able to always play the note you're looking for :)

      @@CutiepieTinWhistle That makes sense. A reviewer on Amazon said that he thought Dixon's brass or nickle ones sounded better. Can you (or those you play for) tell a difference in the sound produced. I have listened to a review that compared Dixon Trad nickle brass with a Goldfinch and with a Alba (same song, same mic, same room). At first I liked the Goldfinch but then when I clicked on each sample and then listened with my eyes closed I could hear a difference between the metal and the polymer whistles. I think you have helped me narrow down to a Dixon or a Clarke...just didn't know if metal whistles sound better or not. Yes, I am a beginner but this will probably be my one and only so I want to find something I will enjoy - not "break in" as I learn to play. (kind of like not wanting a student instrument just to learn on and then having to get something better later on)

I saw a Tony Dixon One piece Polymer for 69.95, but still thats a bit for me. • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  2 года назад +1

      Tuneable whistles don't really change the sound much at all. It's a very slight change, which allows you to improve the pitch slightly to match other instruments you may be playing with. The whistle will still only play in the key it's designed to play in, but is fractionally adjustable to slightly sharpen or flatten the pitch.

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  6 месяцев назад

      Oh my, no 😂 bagpipes need A LOT of breath and push and power, this needs practically nothing, and I would imagine that would make it very difficult to play for a piper.
      You'll likely need something that's a bit more of a 'heavy blower'.
      Perhaps a 'Killarney' whistle if you want to start with something good quality. You'd do well with an MK midgie in future, but they're quite an investment. For something cheap to try out, you might consider a Woodi whistle from the USA...or even a Weston whistles, they're wooden whistles but usually pretty reasonably priced.
      I have reviewed all these so you can check them out for yourself on my channel 😊

    • @Juliadeer
      @Juliadeer 6 месяцев назад

      @@CutiepieTinWhistle thank you for your thoughtful response. I had considered a Woodi set however, I was concerned about the upper register on those whistles as you and several other reviewers said it was a tad problematic. The piper I spoke of seems to prefer the breathy sound of the Dixon DX005D and the Woodi and I love the plastic for its durability for that reason I would probably not choose the Weston. You sure are correct about the bagpipes taking mountains and that was an interesting concern about a piper finding an instrument which takes little air frustrating. I had not considered that. However, breath control is highly practiced with pipers so she might be able to dial it down so to speak? I know she has explained that even fractional breath changes even with the same bag squeezing pressure can swing the pitch of her pipe chanter. She has to dial in her pressure at around 38 PSI without fluctuating more than about 0.5 PSI while playing. Also she circular breathes when playing her practice chanter. So that habit might be harder to break than holding low breath pressure? I’m not sure but she heard your hobbit video and fell in love so I need to find her something.
