having watched this interview twice, by accident...... this is amazing interview, sincerity, humbleness.......Ben Youngs.......positive rugby interviews.....my hat off to you.....
He did a really good interview with Big Jim Hamilton just before the 2023 World Cup final, watch that (I think it's on RUclips, I watched it on the Rugbypass site when it first came out)
Ben youngs and these guys are the only pundits/podcasters/youtubers with an actual accurate take on Finn Russell. Talking about his game management. You can tell these guys watch him regularly unlike casual fans and other pundits who label him as a maverick. Well done lads good take. Loved the episode
I agree. Certainly when you read how some fans judge #10s solely on their kicking or if they are running 10s , but their main job is to implement the gameplan and knowing how to manage the game. Finn Russell is an exceptional exciting player and isn't credited how well he manages this teams be it Scotland or Bath
Thanks Ben for this podcast. I always watched watched you playing for England and you are one of England legends and i like your understanding of this great game that we love. My prediction for this weekend, I think Boks will be strong for England. Boks by 10+.
It's important to understand that SA doesn't have Hollywood, or a-listers like Taylor Swift, U2, or the NFL, nor the global football stars like Messi or Ronaldo. Many see Siya as a global star. The Boks are our celebrities and heroes.
@ i do you don’t on the low end chiefs has what 10 million supporters, Mamelodi Sundowns player wage bill is more than the Springboks, soccer in this country is a juggernaut
@@kalac161no one said Pirates and Chiefs don't have support... Everyone knows football is bigger than rugby in SA. You just wanted to be a doos. Congratulations, you've achieved it. Also Rugby isn't a white sport anymore.
Ben Young’s wonderful servant to the English game and excellent rugby player, really measured on the pod too. Having the big boys on today, ace pod. Go bokke 💪
Great interview Boet, your question about Rassie and SA. I honestly think Rassie's communication, honestly with everyone, including himself, staff, players, and fans, has brought all this success. Obviously with the sprinkle of passion of rugby and love for his country. The guy knows that no one is bigger than the game/country. He knows that winning fixes everything. He's not satisfied winning two world cups, he's trying to stay relevant and a step ahead of where the game is going. He's shown this by surrounding himself with coaches that he knows will improve the team. He's willing to seek and accept help when needed. Most importantly, his honest and open communication with the team has created a great environment. Even players who aren't playing still feel part of the team. He's made coming off the bench as important as starting, starting doesn’t mean you better than the person on the bench. Great coaches know how to create a healthy environment where everyone buys in.
Great pod guys! IMO the key is to disrupt our launch. Put pressure on the lineout and flood the wide ruck which typically only has a single forward cleaner with our new attacking shape. We’ve also been caught out at times with short chips and grubbers as our 9 often shoots rather than sweeps behind.
Just for once I want to hear Ben Youngs say the "South" in South Africa 😂. On an unrelated note, I am also really enjoying that England Backrower Chandler Cunningham-Sa
Great podcast because as a rugby nut spectator we watch players and wonder what it would be if they would sit at your table for dinner .And watching/listening to you guys it's so great to hear your guys thoughts unscripted. Love it full respect mate
Last AB loss at Eden Park was against the French in 1994. Shimmie had it right that they have won 50 matches straight. The 50th was the second TRC match against Argentina this year, after losing in Wellington.
@Ben, please don't stop saying what you think! It's nice to hear someone make a call on a game instead of hedging their bets. Even if Australia then make you sound a bit silly ;)
Rugby is a very technical game, with specialist areas like the scrum, the lineouts, defence, kicking attack. Elite players understand this, it’s part of their world whereas . Most fans have no Idea what a tight heads prop role is, or the difference between a tighthead lock and the loose head. teams and individual players are trying achieve on the pitch, which is why usually on rugby content fans in their comments don’t care or talk the games and will focus on one player positively or negatively instead of how teams actually won or lost the game. Certain fans focus on perceived slights between countries and players and then just cannot accept or understand that many elite players will have friends in opposing teams They are professional players with more in common with other professional players than with many fans . Players don’t personalise a refs decision or a particular incident with an opponent like fans do, players focus on improving individual and team performance . There are some very knowledgeable fans out there but usually they will post on specific rugby forums because a lot of rugby content engagement is toxic.
So Ben what is Polly and Coly going to talk about when they meet on the field Saturday?Bet they are going to gossip and giggle about your Aus prediction.
OK I do understand your comment but how was the level of competition 2011-2015 the springboks were the only team with a realistic chance of beating them.
15:25 when I started at my high school in 1992 our 1st team lost almost all their games, the u14 team i played in won almost all of our games. I was desperate to leave.
I bet that Stephen Jones's article about the springboks and substitutions has made it to Rassie's PowerPoint presentation, trying to hype his pack of wolve to make it personal
Do think the age profile of the squad is just a little concerning. I think there is a little bit of a generational divide between the stalwarts of the last 2 world cups, most of whom are in their 30s, and a very exciting group of young players, with not much in the middle (i.e. the 23-27 age range). Obviously that's nitpicking the best team in the world, but it is a worry for me.
I agree that it is a concern. But if we, the casual fans, can see and notice it the management staff is 100% aware and working on it. Rassie is always rotating and willing to lose a game for the sake of player development. The future is bright!
I think England will play an identical game to the world cup semi-final, at least for the first sixty minutes. The goal will be to keep the scoreline low and the ball in hand at a minimum. Then to unleash some pace in the final 15-20 to try to win the game by a score. Rassie and co. will anticipate this move. He didn't in the semi-final - his biggest mistake as a coach at that point. His next big mistake was fielding the exact same XV that had taken to the field the previous week against France. SA were flat for the entire game because they had no fresh legs. They won't have this problem this time around and also have a new attacking system under Brown that England will be unfamiliar with. While the game could go either way - three games in the past six years between these two sides have been settled by a single point, which tells you how fine the margins are - I think SA will edge it.
No prop has even been nominated before for WPOTY, but Ox or PSDT are my picks, Dupont depending on his November is gonna get a nom, but don't think he'll win
22:33 kiwis will be a problem. As always. Looking forward to another 3 years of ding dong. Boks not playing Ireland and especially France on this tour is such a huge missed opportunity by world rugby.
I want to know from John Smit what happened in the 57-0 games and the huge loss 47-0 to Australia. The South African public deserves an explanation because it was TRAUMATIC. A team doesn't fail like that from JUST poor coaching, it fails to that extent by having players that DO NOT WANT THEIR COACH AROUND. Its a player revolution which made a mockery of the Bok jersey. IF the players hate their coach that much then there should be a mechanism for them to vote for a motion of no confidence in the coach.
It could also be that there was massive internal strife and factions in the team that caused them to play like SHIT. Certainly weren't playing for each other. And maybe John Smit wasn't a great captain in that respect, so he doesn't want to discuss it? The truth must OUT.
This English team is giving sweaty palms coz yall written them off and probably that wl play in their favour - I see a big upset, what happened to Mitchell? He’s the best 9 for England at the moment

He was battling with that cushion, was nearly lying flat at the end there😂
The conditions are going to be wet again (if the forecast is to be believed). We could be seeing a game from England very similar to the semi-final.
Now we know the selections, even more so!

definitely stuck up against the team room's wall
And it will work too, nothing more dangerous than a Springbok with a chip on his shoulder.
Why would it ? Stephen Jones is Welsh and is probably more critical of England than he is or South Africa.
@patrickchilds2987 The North vs The South, rings a bell?
Shim and Barney providing an enthusiastic injection to the British pub scene. 🤣 definitely looking worse for wear
