    Being a diehard Tele fan I’ve watched this with more than a little curiosity. I’ve been down a few rabbit holes in my time & own 4 custom shop teles plus 2 Tom Anderson’s & 1 Suhr but I’ve never had the courage until now to attempt what you’ve done. You are an inspiration. Subbed.

      You know what, your post is EXACTLY why I bother making these Warmoth guitars... there is no doubt it can all be done and for less (if you were for example in the USA) than a guitar off the shelf that is of similar level and quality. Check my channel as I do have a number of guitars I have completed, Tele types and Strat types. Indeed I still own most :). Thanks so much for watching and of course for those very kind words.

    Great build there Tony! Quite inspirational! I’ve been gathering parts for my own Warmoth Tele build and it’s a pretty burst so didn’t want the pickguard to cover it up. Was a little nervous about perfectly mounting the neck pickup into the route and keeping it stable without a pickguard, but then I see you went with a sweet chrome ring which looks cool and adds stability. Never seen one of those on a Tele. I will be shamelessly copying you sir!
    Thanks for the detailed descriptions throughout. You built one beautiful Tele. 😊

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад +1

      It CAN be tough... as the first part of the video showed. This is really the first time I had to change 'plan' but I did show what I did and how I did it. The result was about 10 times better than the guitar with those other parts and wiring in the first half. That shows that its very possible to 'get things wrong' especially if you never used the wiring for 4 way switching (for example). Nothing really wrong with the 4 way switching but it was not really for me. You should have a go at building a guitar - if you're concerned then start low cost... learn the general things, and later go for it! :) I'm sure most would learn from a guitar build and ultimately should end up with a great guitar. Thanks for watching ... and thanks for the post.

      Hey HG, great to hear you. The video turned out rather different than I had planned, but it is a lesson that is captured in the video, and how my idea (from reading about the 4 way switch and wiring) took the wrong road for me. Thankfully it was easy to solve, but the noiseless ultra pickups and in particular the neck pickup took a little work to get that gold cover on there. I never saw anyone do that before so it might be useful to someone. Oh I know you have made some very nice guitars and its really great to see them... ANYONE ON HERE SHOULD LOOK AT @humblegeorge channel and see how he had created his guitars. It's always great to see other guys projects too and maybe sometimes how some of my videos helped guys. And that's the thing really, Even me, on this video I learned something more. The YT platform has many less than perfect things especially when you try and create a channel... but it is still a very useful platform to post videos that could help others. Ha don't try and make money from it unless you post some junk - we've all seen the lunacy of 10M views of a typical type that remains generally adolescent based. You know what, getting those things 'right' IMO is the essence of building/assembling a guitar. A lesson I learned on my first Stratocaster (I still have it!) - the best strat ITW video series that in total has had about 1.4m views is from comments about that guitar from 2009 to today... yes the comments still come in. And that was about the neck, the body and the pickguard. If you watch it played here: ruclips.net/video/SFvTbnOwCHg/видео.html notice how the guitar, the neck and pick guard are very well matched (IMO) - I know it's subjective, but many guys told me that over the years, and some even complained that Warmoth stopped doing the pick guard color and they could not get it as they wanted a similar guitar look. I never forgot that. So every guitar I have bought the parts from Warmoth (as well as genuine Fender necks and bodies from www.stratosphereparts.com ) I have ALWAYS considered the 'look' as well as the woods, guitar style, neck and generally the components. I never completed a single guitar that turned out rubbish, at least in my opinion. I own virtually every one with just two exceptions that I sold some years back. Great comment and hopefully I have offered a slightly different insight in to the guitar and how I look at it when looking for parts etc. Thanks for watching - really appreciated.

      Ha I get it... with videos this long its really a matter whether you like me 'harping on' (but it is to try and help guys who never did a guitar build) or want to see the meat and veg of the video :) Hey thanks for posting the info of how you found the Babicz - I never really see them around too much, but they do offer a very important upgrade IMO and that is 50 times the surface touching of the saddles as opposed to two little grub screws on the originals and others. I think that does matter. The name 'full contact bridge' is very befitting. And great to know that you had no issues with the other bridge I showed. The 4 way for me was not really what I wanted so eventually as the video said, I flipped to the 3 way and for me it's exactly the sort of tones and feel that I wanted. The playing was just a jam really and I did fumble around a bit (I don't even know the track) but those tones were in there. Thanks for the post - good info - and thanks for watching.

      @@tonymckenzieofficial Rock and Roll TONY! I have owned a few of the Babicz bridges. I have a chrome one on a Tele I built around 10 years ago using a Warmoth body and a Musikraft neck and it works great in this one. It's the model with the little plates on the bottom. I also have 2 black ones. I tried one of the Babicz on another Tele I built with a Pine body and it didn't work so I switched back to the standard ashtray bridge from a 2009 custom shop guitar. (Bought the parts on eBay) The standard bridge worked much better in that one. It's just the matching you have to work out. The Warmoth body is alder and the build went NICELY. I spoke with Seymour Duncan while he was working on some old pickups for me and asked him about a suggestion for this build. He told me to check out the Custom Shop 53 Tapped Tele set. I liked the idea of them and he mentioned he had built them for Jeff Beck. Apparently he used them on Beck's Guitar Shop. They are great! Made me laugh because you didn't like the 4-way config (neither do I and yes, I have another Tele with the 4-way which I want to change! lol) But check this out, the Tap Tele is a 5-way! Now, normally I like SIMPLE, and the Tele exudes SIMPLE. So the 3-way switch make me perfectly happy, but this set by Seymour KICKS ass and the 5-way on it is a worthy one for sure. They rock, check out this demo ruclips.net/video/-1QvXsZutUM/видео.html

Very High Grade Quartersawn flame Maple. Abalone Face and Side Inlay. Sweet stuff. Paid just under US $600 in 2015 - worth every penny. It's awesome to have a Tele with a NICE 59 neck! take care bro.

    My issue with teles is that they just feel blocky with no cutaways. That's why I prefer this sort of contoured body for a telecaster build. As a lifelong stratplayer I demand a belly and arm cut. I need those ergonomics. My other issue with teles is that the neck pickups are never anything to write home about. The bridge is where the tele comes into its own. With strats the 2, 4 and neck create the magic. But I am a humbucker player at heart, and I tend to use the bridge 95% of the time. But if I were going to go for a tele bridge tone I'd definitely use a noiseless single coil.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  10 месяцев назад

      They do I agree, but with the cut aways they work for me too. I'm not really an everyday telecaster player, but I do like them. I read somewhere that the middle of the 5 way switch is often liked by many Tele players... but I think each switch position does have its place. Buchanan was awesome on one :) Have a listen to that 5 String Blues... I swear I hear the devil taking Roy away towards the end of that track... indeed, an incredible piece of music played by a master of the Telecaster. Noiseless are very good... Hey thanks for watching - appreciated.

Till I found what I felt right. Not necessarily anything wrong with anything i decided not to use. More a case of feel and looks. My hope is that after doing it myself. I will be more inclined to learn and play. Rather than a off the shelf one. I now also have a off the shelf one.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад

      I tried to get across exactly what you're saying. You know, when I stopped the build and changed direction that was because the guitar did not doo what I wanted from it - all the parts were fine, but somehow the 4 way switch was not for me. And I removed the David While pickups, not because they were bad in some way (far from it) but even from the start I did not really want to mod them, so I reversed the mod and saved them for another day (surely I will make another video). And as you say, you can sort of tailor the result of a self build to what YOU want. I have always found that the result (in this case slightly harder to achieve) ends up nigh on perfect for my playing style. Well done on doing it - many don't or won't 'have a go' but they should. And thanks for watching.

How Roy could concoct a track of that stature I can't even comprehend. I watch the country guys sometimes and there's a guy on YT that talks a lot about Telecasters and Fender amps.. a great guy who really knows his stuff. Yes there is John 5 I agree. But honestly, maybe I should have said that Telecasters were 'getting chosen even more than before' - you'll get what I mean. Amazing that Stairway was created on a Telecaster. So they say. So, my advice, you could start off with the more bottom end neck and bodies they have and I know they fit well as I tried them years ago, and once you gain with that then work towards a great guitar you always wanted, but create your own. When i ordered my custom luthier built Strat, it was out of frustration with the overpriced poor quality
    so called "Custom Shop" guitars that you can order, then wait a long time for only to be gutted when they
    are nothing like what you wanted.
    I have two Fender Custom Shop Strats, the first one a "Hank Marvin" spec was as good as they get first time.
    The second one a "Bonnie Raitt" was a disaster, with the help of an excellent dealer it was rejected.
    So when i wanted a "David Gilmour" Strat, Fender were the last place i wanted one from.
    After a lot of research, i found a highly regarded luthier in the UK who listened to what i was looking for,
    he gave his thoughts, and left me to come up with a final spec.
    Just over 18 months later i got a long awaited email to say it was as perfect as he could make it,
    on collection i was more than happy with his workmanship, it was faultless, and a dream to play
    with a thin compound radius neck that suited my small hands.
    If you decide to do what Tony has done, take your time, even if you don't have the confidence
    to complete it to a high standard, there is always the luthier option that i took.
    Thanks for showing us your excellent "Custom Shop" Tele Tony, it has worked out for you
    and hopefully ecourages others to try doing the same.

    That looks like a really nice guitar.
    James

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад

      That's a good question James. I'll explain it as best I can. I knew the neck was 'right' as I had the 'other' bridge on before. However, this second unit was thinner (for sure) and that had some effect of lowering the whole saddles. I did take a look at that, but it seemed to me that the saddles did not offer as much lift as I wanted for the setup. That could have meant a number of things, but I did not want to mess about with the neck pocket etc. which I could have done but nah... wrong way to go. Eventually I just decided that rather than fixing something that I had already had working with the other bridge, that I should just refit the bridge that worked fine. Honestly, I don't really think there would have been a real improvement now that I have played the guitar after being complete for the last time. It was not worth any extra effort with that other bridge. At least that's what I settled with and I think I made the right choice. Thanks for watching ...

    Actually you don't want the body to move with the string. In the theoretical extreme case that the body moves exactly the same way as the string you would not hear anything!
    My own superstition is that the more dense, heavier and strong the bridge is (and everything else), then there simply is, the more power in the string and it will have a longer decay.
    But I have no proof of this. In fact I have tried various bridges in various guitars over the years, and even at times played a guitar not exactly remembering what bridge I put in and not even noticing the difference.

      Ha I get that... and although I have looked and looked I never have found a definitive answer - nearest I got was the Strat I built with the Koa top which was hollow and those strings vibrate (or a string) for about 30 seconds unplugged which I thought was pretty good - and better than my other guitars. Good point. Thanks for watching.

      I could agree with those sentiments. I'm certainly not perfect, but I can honestly say that there is not one Warmoth guitar that I own that I don't like. If you watch the Vega-Trem video with that Strat guitar, the old bridge was not good. At the time I often used to try different brands etc. as part of the video content (ha so I did not get bored) and that bridge should never have been fitted (Wilkinson). The Vega-Trem changed that guitar incredibly. Sometimes its things like that what happens and for me at least it gives the guitar a whole new perspective. You will know the Warmoth quality hopefully and I never really had much trouble with them except in the early days with fret ends and that sort of thing, but I did all of that easy enough. Thanks for watching... and a useful comment for guys to read...

    Not a fan of Warmoth necks at all. The first one I purchased was back-bowed, they did allow me to pick free replacement but had to pay my own shipping (return) of the original neck.
    The replacement was fine but the fretwork was lacking; I could never lower it beyond medium action (16 inch radius) without the problems such as dead spotting - very slight, mind you - or specific fret buzzing would occur. Eye-balling the neck along its plane, at naught relief, would manifest imperfections.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial

      You did not say when you bought those necks... but some years ago the Warmoth necks in particular had issues with frets and fret ends that I was not that happy with. Today its a different story in my opinion, but hey some can disagree... my opinions are only based on my own experiences - and I have bought every part I have had from them. Lie I said I have seen fret trouble years back but not for some time. A very good point and thanks for posting it because opinions of guys that have bought the stuff is useful to many. • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад

      Well I did post it later - so I'll copy it here:
      And really if I had continued to spend time I could have solved it, but to be honest, this video has already taken up to two weeks off and on inc. the editing and messing about, so I decided (about half way through) to just take that one back off. Someone else has fitted that other bridge on here (I read it) so it can clearly be done. But I really like the one on there now... Thanks guys...

    It looks great. I've never tried Warmoth before, but will have to give them a go one day. I do have a question though: if it's better than something you can buy off the rack for the money (i.e. better than Fender) then what was the rationale for the Fender logo? It also looks like a Fender custom shop decal on the back of the headstock and a Fender custom shop neck plate as well so just wondering why.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад +1

      Well firstly the neck is Fender licensed and the guitar includes many Fender parts really. The body certainly is different in manufacture but possibly not by shape. Relate it to another way, if someone looked at that guitar (without any logos) would they call it a Telecaster? I think so. I just wanted some sort of logo on there as the Warmoth logo is literally a stick on which I have to say is pretty poor. BTW the rear logo and neck plate are not actually the same as Fender logos. Its of course just for personal use and bearing in mind the neck is Fender licensed it seemed logical. Thanks.

    Fender doesn't make anything that looks anywhere as nice as your build. I built a Warmouth LP style with all high end parts and SD59 pickups. Let me tell you, at the time I could have bought a LP Studio for the money, but I was able to select the neck type, woods and components that I wanted and like and everyone that hears and/or plays the guitar comments on how creamy it sounds and how smooth it plays. I don't care about what it cost me and resale value because it looks and sounds just as good as any high end Gibson without their ridiculous price tag and I will be 6 foot under when the guitar gets sold.

    • @tonymckenzieofficial
      @tonymckenzieofficial  Год назад +1

      That's very similar to my own opinion too. The Studio now is so much more expensive these days (as is many brands) and I also get to make the thing exactly as I want it - That certainly matters. Thanks for watching...

    Love your channel Tony, but personally I find the blinging and Fendering of a Warmoth Telecaster too much. Sorry, but for me it's ended-up looking like a wannabe PRS owned by a dentist, with hardware dremilled-out by his own dental equipment. A quilt-topped Tele with faux-gold accoutrements and licensed parts... really ? On the bright-side, my Granny would love it, but sadly she passed in 1976.

      There was no real 'problem' with the bridge, just personal preference as I preferred the other one as it did not use clamping screws like the other one did. There are clamps etc. but its a different design - and the logo on the other was bigger... hope it helps and thanks for watching.
