The only element of the Blue Angels that has to be experienced directly to understand is the incredible SOUND of the planes scorching across the sky. They come to Chicago every year and the immense sound of the planes streaking over the city as they warm up before the show is so loud!! It's unbelievable. They show is mostly performed over Lake Michigan but the warm up is all over the city.

I also grew up on the Severn River and saw the Blue Angels perform many times. They often came up to our house when they preformed at the Naval Academy (graduation week) and we got to see them do their turns at the end of their runs without leaving our home. I also had the pleasure of being at what used to be the downtown Marriot Hotel in Annapolis on the day they performed. My brother-in-law and I were upgrading the Cable TV system in the hotel on the day they performed. We found an empty room in the hotel that faced the right direction and watched the show from the balcony during our lunch break. They were so close on their passes that we could see the pilot's faces and could feel the jet wash as they passed. Later, I live across the river from Patuxent Naval Air Station in southern Maryland and saw quite a few other 'things.'

This was video of a practice day. That's why sometimes the smoke stops. The pilots turn the smoke off if they notice themselves get slightly out of position. Then turn it back on when they get back in the correct spot. That way when reviewing the video of the practice they can more easily see when they did something wrong. They ARE amazing to watch.

From the tip of the wing to the other plane's canopy (the glass over the pilot) is, on perfect flights, 46cm. Their regular jobs (Carrier Take-offs & Landings) are demanding. Landings consist of 1) finding what looks like a postage stamp on the floor from 2m away on an ocean that looks exactly the same to the horizon everywhere you look. 2) because the landing area is at an angle to the ships direction, you must constantly adjust. 3) you are in an aircraft weighing 13,000kg, traveling at 240kph, and 4) With that aircraft, wheel-to-steel (touchdown) must be in an area the size of half of a football pitch (50m x 40m). The US Navy does not refer to its men and women as "pilots". They are "United States Naval Aviators", anyone can be a pilot.

    • @flyboy6392

the big plane is a C-130 Hercules and is nicknamed "fat albert" by the angles, it goes to all their air shows and carries most of their spare equipment for them. It is the last aircraft in the C-130 line of planes to use the JATO launch system, which straps 6 rockets to its back so the massive plane could take off from smaller runways and they used it in one of their shows for more pizzazz ;)

A few facts: the Blue Angels formed in 1946 when they saw the French “les Bleus”, this is the world’s first aerial demonstration team. Blue Angels are the second. The team thought it would be a very good idea to have its own. Thus, “The Navy Aerial Flight Demonstration Team” was born. It soon became very popular. However, in July 1946, the team got its official name of Blue Angels after one of the pilot read the same name nightclub in New York and decided the name is absolutely a perfect fit with the team since their planes have always wore a coat of “Dark Sea Blue” paint. 2. The “Blues” and the Air Force Thunderbirds fly some of the closest formations in air shows, only as far apart as 2ft or 0.5 meters! So close that one time, a pilot scratched his nose and was surrounded by his fellow pilots once they landed cause everyone saw it! 3. Blues are also the only flight demo team to not wear any G-suits since it’s feared that the suits, when inflated? Might jostle there pilots stick hand, which rest on their legs. This may tip their hand and thus the stick, cause a crash that will kill them. Currently, they fly the Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet. Team consists of 5 naval pilot and 1 Marine. Pilots all have at least 2,000 flight hours and are super experienced. Although they have six planes, all single seat, the team do have at least a two seat F/A-18F to take civilians or dignitaries up for an experience flight if the order comes in!

They have 12 F-18's in total....1-6 are the show birds and 7-8 are two seaters used for demo's and back ups while at the shows (They have in the past had an issue with one of the show birds during a show and had to land quickly and jump into the spare). Out of the other 4...1-2 are painted the show colors, and two not painted. They normally bring 7-8 birds on the road, unless if the show is overseas (Europe, Asia, etc) or Alaska where they bring most of them. They use the C130J (Fat Albert) for transport of the equipment and crew, on longer shows they may bring a reg cargo plane for added crew and equipment. Fat Albert also does flight demo's, along with picking up added equipment if needed. After the 2020 season, they upgraded to the SuperHornet (bigger, heavier, more powerful and updated).

I have seen a few airshows. I recall seeing the blue angles a few times at Miramar in the mid-late nineties as a teen. We lived near the base so I could watch many of the shows from my backyard. On one occasion I was on one of those older cordless phones with the antennae on it talking to my friend while watching the show. It must have been using a similar frequency as the pilots because we could hear the lead pilot talking, calling out the timing for various maneuvers. Took a moment to realize where the extra voice was coming from. A few years earlier, I had the chance to go to the airshow with VIP tickets (friends dad owned a car dealership and supplied the tickets), and we were seated along the runway with the pilots. Was a cool experience, and I remember it fondly. I still have the autographs tucked away.

The sad part is 27 of these pilots have died while flying since the air shows started in 1946. The most recent being in 2016 in my home state during a mid-air collision.

I used to live near a Naval Air Base. The Blue Angels do a show their every summer. They would show up for practice about a week ahead of the show, and would fly over my house while practicing. It's soooo loud, and you can hear them coming, but by the time you see them, they're gone!

I loved going to the air shows as a kid every year at CNE in Toronto but at one point there were back to back accidents until they stopped doing them altogether. Luckily I've never witnessed it in person. We'd either get there late or the other times we didn't go those years. Watching this brought back memories and it's such an amazing thing to watch air acrobatics but it still scares me that the slightest miscalculation can mean someones life. I'm glad the men enjoyed it🤗

I saw one of these shows in person. As a kid my grandfather would take us to his fly-ins. Planes from all over would "fly in" and meet at an airfield for a weekend of air shows. Very cool.

27 Blue Angels have died in Air Shows or training for one. That's somewhere around 10% of all the people who have flown in that group. It's incredibly dangerous, even for the best of the best. They keep pushing the edge though because that's what fighter pilots do, train for war.

I still remember some years back when something went wrong and we lost some of these amazing performers in a deadly accident. Even when trained these stunts are risky because the air can be sucked out of the engines at any time. They are indeed talented flyers!

The entire Thunderbird team i think all died during a practice run when i was little, followed the lead plane right into the ground. I was air force brat so got to see an air show pretty much yearly the entire time my dad served. Over 14 years of my life lol

These airshows are always a risk. Back in 1988 (I believe), there was a major accident in Ramstein, Germany, which killed 3 pilots and some 70 spectators hit by burning airplane parts. You can find footage of the accident on youtube if you look for it, though it's not for the light-hearted. I had been attending the airshows in the previous years myself and was lucky to have missed out the one where this accident happened.
A lot has happened since. Most notably, the airshows now take place at a considerable distance to the spectators, and ideally above water.

Not sure if they reacted to old WWII planes during air show events. Let them see some history with the famous P-51 Mustang, Supermarine Spitfire, Curtiss P-40, P-38 Lightning, and others. The P51 though, sounds so amazing.

The first time they came to San Francisco they buzzed the city the day before the show, on their first practice. We were working downtown, and one of them came flying right by our windows, upside down. Another one flew underneath the Bay Bridge, lol. I think they got in trout ale for that, but it was so cool! I was up on a hill next to the Golden Gate bridge watching the show, and one came flying right over our heads, fast. The noise was ear splitting. Love this guys.

To see the Blue Angel's live is a beautiful sight, these pilots go through years of training, my husband is a retired US Navy pilot, he was a top gun, flying F 18's super hornets and A1 corsairs, I'm extremely lucky and proud of him, my kids and I were lucky, he came home after every mission, many did not.

If they didn't have fear, they would not be so good at this. Fear is what keeps them on their toes. Everyone has fear, they just overcome it and as their skills increase, the fear decreases. Fear is natural and inbeded in our DNA...It either debilitates you or it gives you strength.

This is my favorite and would have loved a part B included as the lenses used to capture this are telephoto and makes them appear closer then they actually are. But if you see them flying with helmut cams, they are a bit further apart, but not by much. And they bop around by four or five feet which makes what the percision flight teams do, all that more amazing.
