Southern/Creole style cooking is definitely the best type of food in America. Even more so if you're eating it while physically in the south. But, if you're in a Pacific Coastal State or somewhere in-between Texas to California and you find a great Authentic Mexican Taqueria that doesn't change their menu to appeal to everyone, that's also some of the best food in existence. But, it's much harder finding such a place within the U.S. imo than it is finding some great Southern Soul Food Restaurants in the south. Dang... Now I'm hungry.

Also: I would love to see a video series where the meals consist of easily avaliable local foods that are prepared the way Westerners or Asians would prepare them. Okra is especially popular in the South Eastern US states. It is usually prepared by chopping it into pieces and then breading it and then deep frying it so that it it is hot and crispy, as you have served it here. But we serve our fried okra with two sides of different dipping sauces, one is white and creamy, with salt with lots of garlic, like Ranch-Dressing, and the other dipping sauce is thick, brown, and sweet, like plum sauce or chutney. Fried Okra is most often served in America as an appetizer or starter. Then the other way that we cook okra is as one of the vegetables in a soup stew, like in New Orleans style Gumbo, (which reduces the slimy texture of the okra's inside, and is served piping hot, usually stewed for hours with tomatoes, onions, green-peppers, carrots, celery, and some type of meat, usually shrimps or chicken, and then served on top of white rice. And finally, we pickle the whole okra in a sour, slightly salty vinegar liquid filled with herbs (usually dill, and bay-leaves or laurel-leaves), plus onion, and garlic. Pickled Okra must rest in this vinegar liquid for weeks or even months before it is ready to eat, and then it is served as a refreshing side dish that accompanies a sandwich, or with BBQed meat, or it is cut into pieces and put in a green salad. Pickled Okra is served cold and only in small portions, and it is usually homemade rather than store-bought. All three okra preparations are delicious, and not slimy at all.

Okra is my favorites vegetable, when we fry it, we usually do what is called "pan fried style" which is usually just the crumbs, no egg or anything to make a thick batter, so that it is VERY lightly breaded or crumbed and you still see plenty of green. I prefer it this way to covered in a batter. My grandmother would cook this for me when I would visit. It was my favorite. I also love Okra stewed with tomatoes and onions, when you make it this way and serve on black eyed peas it is called "Hop and jons" and is consider important for good luck at new years day. It's almost a requirement you eat "Hop N' jon's" for new Years. But we put okra in many things. Vegetable soup especially as it both adds flavor and thickens it, it is of course also in all sorts of cajun cooking, gumbos etc. (Gumbo is another African word for okra) It is an extremely healthy vegetable and good for diabetics for keeping blood sugar stable. (but not when fried) But fried is the best tasting. My wife will also get pickled okra and fry them and that is pure heaven. This is THE vegetable for the South Eastern United States, but no the name isn't English. Rather it is English pronunciation of the West African Ashanti word, it was imported here from Africa by slaves. South Eastern U.S. food is a mix of English, French, African, and Native American cooking.

Next: gumbo! The name of the dish comes from the West African word for okra. Gumbo is made with seafood, chicken, spicy sausages, rice, and lots of other veggies besides okra.

I'm probably the 100th person to point this out, but okra itself comes from either east or west Africa, and the English word comes from the Igbo language of (what is now) southern Nigeria.

Westerners don't normally eat it with dipping sauce. It's normally eaten with green beans, mashed potatoes, and fried chicken or salmon patties with rolls as bread. Usually on Sundays.

Many people in the southern USA cook okra with tomatoes and onions, simmered down, like a stew. Sometimes served with rice. When okra is cooked alone it gets slimy, but the acid in the tomatoes kills the slime.

I enjoyed watching them eat okra! Just an observation or two, though. The okra looks to be a little over cooked and too greasy. For best results it needs to be deep fried in very hot oil for just a short time. They need to be golden in appearance. When the oil isn't hot enough, they soak up more of the cooking oil.

It is delicious, even to folks who don’t like okra! They love fried okra. But don’t think of us as too impressive with fancy ideas of frying foods. Because we literally have tried to fry everything. Pickles, tomatoes, chocolate candy bars, ice cream, cream cheese cake, fruits, meats…we even offer fried snack cakes called Twinkie. 😂

Okra is nutrient rich for a vegetable, high in antioxidants and good for heart health. Good for pregnancy as well, and may even help stave off cancer. Maybe it's not the healthiest method to fry it, but it sure is delicious when you do.

Fried okra is one of the most common vegetables to find on the menu of Barbecue or fried chicken fast food restaurants. Sometimes I will buy a whole pound of it and eat it as a snack in place of popcorn or potato chips.
