i remember buying this on gatefold double single in 1980 when i was 14 and thinking it was amazing!....played it to death, so under rated as a single.....perfection!
Wish i could of grown up in a nicer generation, as a 25 year old in this world its hard to compare to what REAL life was back then. You hold those memories tight sir
@@charlieday710nah, people were nasty. Life was boring, dull, grim, grey. THIS MUSIC was a reaction thst but also seemed to offer an escape to something better
I saw John Foxx some days ago, on performance in Cracov. He's still great artist. It was pleasure to saw him alive. And HE is a nice man in private..My dream came true..
Unfortunately I just discovered the music of this genius and pioneer of the electronic music in UK. Now, John Foxx is in the list of my favourites music legends. This song is a fundament of my words and the video... EXPLENDID!!!... an interesting futiristic vision.
I’ve only gotten into post punk properly in the last 8 years. I’m so excited when I find a new (to me) artist like John Foxx. I’d say lots of people would love to still be surprised with music like that!
Vastly underrated Artiste who did not receive the full credit he so richly deserved, and TRUE Ultravox! Frontman; An Inspiration to all early 80's Futurists, alongside Bill nelson.
My favourite blue eyes from synthpop. I remember how i was astonished for the change He has made in the direction of his music, when i knew he was on the first album of Ultravox that was of a totally different sound , very post punk. Definitely love the synthpop direction. "METAMATIC" is a great album, this song, together with "Underpass" and "he's a Liquid" were absolutely magic. Seen this video for the first time in 1995 during a tv show about the history of pop music
Ultravox! This album was recorded in 76 so it pre dates any punk record in Britain New Rose by The Damned was the first record released in Britain so calling them post punk is a tad absurd as Ultravox was recorded and released before any punk record Not including any American bands 😕
I had his first two singles and the first two albums. Metal came in and lost touch with a lot of my punk dudes. Now at 68, looking back. This is still not the version I am looking for.
Now, Foxx was obsessed with removing all trace of humanity in his performance, much like Numan, plus he liked the use of fluorescent light tubing same as Numan. I sometimes wonder if they inspired each other.
Nothing to wonder about there - Numan has said many times over the years that he was inspired by Foxx, and that Foxx was like a mentor to him.... Foxx is also admittedly a huge fan of Numan
1980 bought Metamatic lp shortly bought Human League Dare and Soft Cell Non Stop erotic Cabaret and Visage visage ....... Foxxs classic "No one's driving" 😎✌️.
I hadn't noticed but when I read your comment and listened again I could certainly hear some similarity - to my ear at least. Perhaps it is a form of 'confirmation bias' in my case - i.e. hearing what one expects / hopes to hear.
Thanks for the upload. I love the way this video begins, and those cubes, the colors, John's enigmatic mystique... I wish every song on Metamatic would have had a video! :)
There is a slightly different version of this song on RUclips, under the title "John Foxx - No-One Driving HQ", posted by MiyagiVid. Like the version above, knock-out superb.
ladies and gentlemen the least underrated singer of all time slow motion by uvox dangerous rhythm no one driving and europe after the rain and many more the legend john foxx
A part of my youth, I have survived 3 x Iraq, NI, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afgahnistan, and Cyprus (but that don't count Cyprus). This music and similar kept me focused and I still love it!
I think I know what you're on about. This song in places sounds like Scissor Sisters - The Other Side and there is a version of that song with Doctor Who in it although that was with Chris Ecclestone.
does anyone know why they changed the lyric from "someone's gonna liquid in the sheets" to "someone's gone missing in the sheets"? >.< censorship or something?
Roll on 40 years and literally (grossly overused and abused word but not in this case) 'there's no-one driving'! To add irony to it, I'm typing this in a Waymo and everything's just fine, no probl
A total rip off from The Motors Airport which was released in 1978 this was released over 2 years later Glimmer shimmer used far too often his best work with Ultravox!
Without JOHN FOXX there would be no Gary Numan. John Foxx is GOD!
When was the first Tubeway Army? You may be correct.
The "companion" song to "Underpass". Just brilliant.
EVERY synthpop fan should have a copy of "Metamatic".
agree in full !
Had it and sold it.
Brilliant album!
@@wayneprice4975 You know what you are?? ;-)

Timeless, authentic, innovative, brilliant.

This guy was so very much ahead of the time...
Metamatic.. John foxx genius!!!!
John Foxx is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!
I am so addicted to the New Wave genre. I was born in 1976, so I grew up with some of the best music in the world.
Every time I listen to this record, it just gets better and better.
Love the way he dances

I think you mean fortunately. Better late than never.
I saw John Foxx at in Hitchen, a small concert in Hertfordshire back in the early 80's. long live John Foxx...........

My favorite Jhon Foxx song......... greetings of Perú...
John foxx synth genius total classic the whole lp is mega brilliant ❤

I love the neon cubes going around the synth players... hard to get more early '80s than that.
wildsmiley don't forget Numans pyramid in Cars
wildsmiley lady troy nicked this sort of style in they only want you when your seventeen, not as good as foxx and numan tho

Venetian blinds and new wave music. The two go together like cookies and milk.
Love it. And love this video.
This was one of the trippiest videos.
3x Yamaha CS80's on stage. Never seen that before! That's a ton of money right there
Cool synths!
@ranxerox01 He's a great guy. He was one of my tutors when I was studying at University.
You lucky bawstad.
Absolutely mesmerising, the song is so dream like and the visuals add to it
The predates the 80's sound.
Love the earlier songs from John Foxx

i love your taste in music but my favourite foxx lp is the garden out of this world
still ahead of his time
I
Still have mine. But I'm American, so maybe it's a bit different.
Metamatic!!
Anybody noticed how the keyboard riff on this is very similar to that on 'Airport' by The Motors?
Not really...
I hadn't noticed but when I read your comment and listened again I could certainly hear some similarity - to my ear at least. Perhaps it is a form of 'confirmation bias' in my case - i.e. hearing what one expects / hopes to hear.
Yes since you mentioned it. I wonder which came first. Airport is much more enjoyable.
@@EightTooMany airport 1978 -no one driving 1980
Airport pre dates it by 2 years but this is stands on its own there is nothing new under heaven still great 👍
I always liked this. He put this album out after leaving Ultravox, and I suspect there were some arguments over who did what..
Thanks for the upload. I love the way this video begins, and those cubes, the colors, John's enigmatic mystique... I wish every song on Metamatic would have had a video! :)
Google should use this for their new car commercial...
Yes

Dystopic.
Got this on record back then n still have that picture disc!
There was no picture disc for that single.
On my mind because of the Tesla wreck. Loved this album.
hes so pretty here what the fuckey
The very original john foxx the early eighties elctro scene
Riff reminds me of the Motors song Airport ;)
Just think, the video was edited together by cutting the tape with a knife and then sticking it back together again.
ladies and gentlemen the least underrated singer of all time slow motion by uvox dangerous rhythm no one driving and europe after the rain and many more the legend john foxx
Wow, he was so hot! Damn!
his perception is unique
Love it. So different from Ultravox Ha! Ha! Ha1
had this on a two disc gatefold cover 7 inch still got it
yeah, bought mine in woolworths
Ah...cazzfox, a lovely comment, then there might be hope for any of us over forty.
Une nouvelle vision ? Oui des grands 🤫🤫
Just brilliant! From this to to Kratwerk or Marc Almond just as good. Considering the time and date Happy New Year folks x
Absolutely, PERFECT COMMENT!!! :-)
Ballard's "Crash"
. *Wicked!* ⚡
Totally inspired by JG Ballard's "crash"
The whole Metamatic album was inspired by JG Ballard I think.
@@ajs41 'Underpass' is particularly Ballardian.
Which came first 'No-one Driving' (John Foxx) or 'Airport' (The Motors)?
It's too trippy to be just a dance song.
No foxx no numan
Looks like Richard Tice!
Video e brano interessanti.
I wonder if Elon Musk has heard this track.
Wow ! you beat me to it. I agree.
The music I do as Anthony ultra is heavenly influenced by foxx😎😎👽👽
He's talking about driving reality. The cube is Thoth's dimensional grid.
lucky !!!!!!!!!!
He looked so Bowiean
If someone's going to make a biographical film about him - Thomas Sangster should play John.
For the paparrazzi thanx LW 2014
Up there numan
ahh this will never belong to a time in music history beacuse it is always of the now.
Well said,I saw him at The Dominion Theatre early in his career, brilliant !
Isn't the opening and underlying theme a rip-off of Airport by The Motors ?
Check out Slow Motion Ultravox
Thanks. :) Wow I had no idea it got that many thumbs up.
The album version just sounds like something out of Kraftwerk live 1981 utrchet (is that how to spell it)

No one driving
Everytime I see a Tesla car, I sing this song to myself.
Is he Matt Smith (Dr Who)'s dad by any chance is he?
I think I know what you're on about. This song in places sounds like Scissor Sisters - The Other Side and there is a version of that song with Doctor Who in it although that was with Chris Ecclestone.
Tesla theme music...... Follow by loads of crashes.
does anyone know why they changed the lyric from "someone's gonna liquid in the sheets" to "someone's gone missing in the sheets"? >.< censorship or something?
F Mohamed The problem was that the poetry of the original was open to a rather unsavoury misinterpretation so John changed it for the single.
MISSING in the sheets?
Someone must have gotten it into their head to do John's make up like David Sylvian for this video
This was slightly before David Sylvian used that look.
David Sylvian was using that look in the late 70s...
Perfect song for when Tesla decide to advertise.
Actually, that's not the usual version at all..
