Oh man, your reaction to the native plant garden question was the best. When we moved into our house, there was a huge section of the garden dedicated to native perennials. My husband thought it looked like it should be on the side of the highway. We’ve since removed almost all of it and rehomed the plants to neighbors who are into a more wild look.

    • @Bamboo4U2

I laughed so hard when Aaron was sleeping! Funniest thing he’s done in a while.
I am actually surprised to hear you be so dismissive of incorporating native plants. My first thought was that since you already have a very controlled environment (where you are able to grow all kinds of things that would not grow in your natural climate), you have the option of incorporating pretty much any Oregon or Idaho or PNW native plants that you want, not just what you see occurring in the high desert! Also, since you live in a town near a river, I would also think that even the most strict interpretations of “your local native plants” would also include ones that thrive in a Ripiarian ecosystem, which is totally different than the high desert climate and would love all the potential irrigation available in your garden.
I also think it’s important for anyone reading this in any location to remember that it’s not all or nothing. We don’t have to have a home landscape that’s only natives, or even a whole section or natives. The ecologist recommendation that I recently saw of everyone having 5%-10% native planting seems easy to achieve, but even just one native grass or tree or shrub might make a world of difference towards bringing in more pollinators, for instance. It seems daunting, but I recommend folks just take a quick look at 1: lists of their native plants because you might be surprised (in California we have a native orchid, I was shocked) and 2: location of the nearest nursery that specializes in them, because they’ll make it easy. Just a quick Google of “Boise Area Native Plants” and “Eastern Oregon Native Plants” brought me to some lists of so many species that would incorporate very well into a planned non-native garden of any style, and since my parents live in Northern California and have some overlap, I’m going I write some down for them! Several caught my eye as plants I think Laura uses in her garden already (like Yarrow?), or as relations of them that would make great substitutes or mixed-in.
Just some ones that jumped out at me first were:
Trees: Ponderosa Pine, Vine Maple, Rocky Mountain Maple, Quaking Aspen, Chokeberry (prunus virginiana, I love the Canada Red var), Serviceberry (amelanchier alnifolia, omg the white blooms!), Grand Fir
Shrub: Oregon Grape, Red-Osier Dogwood (I saw a photo of the red stems in the snow, UM WOW), Oceanspray, a couple of native honeysuckles, Snowberry
Forbs: Showy Milkweed (for Monarchs!), Yarrow, Silvery Lupine, wild strawberries (f. virginiana or f. vesca), Sweet Cicely, Longleaf Phlox, Starry False Solomon’s Seal (I never heard of this before but it’s so elegant looking?), plus some beautiful native Irises and Tiger Lilies!
Grasses: Prairie Junegrass (koeleria cristiata), Idaho Fescue, Purple Three-awn (gorgeous!), Great Basin Wildrye, and for soft, undulating lawns I love Seashore Bentgrass (but also a mix like No Mow or Habiturf may be better suited even if it’s not native to one specific area, and apparently university extension centers are developing new strains of native ones for mixes for their own locales all the time!)
I hope this comment will help peak some interest for anyone reading, even if more native plants are not on the table at Garden Answer. I only recently began to research my own native plants for both Northern and Southern California. I’m excited as I learn to garden to mix my plantings between edibles, the tropical plants that love our sun but need water, the trendy Mediterranean plants and succulents used in our drought-tolerant landscape, and of course, my new favorite natives to attract native pollinators and promote biodiversity in my neighborhood!

You look so comfortable and cool and we get to look at that lovely background.
I just have to share this. I've been designing a mixed hydrangea hedge in my backyard and recently picked up a 'Limelight' (I already planted a 'Bobo' and 'Strawberry Shake'). Today, besides the mulch I got, I bought a switchgrass and three delphiniums. The pinkish seed heads of the grass looks so perfect between the weeping 'The Blues' Colorado spruce and the creamy/pink blooms of the hydrangea. I love it.
I'm having fun mowing down the volunteer trees with my new DeWalt reciprocating saw and "decluttering" my long-neglected gardens. I found plants under the tall weeds I'd forgotten I'd planted years ago and they survived. My neighbors are probably wondering what's gotten in to me.

Hi Laura and Aaron! This was another fun Q&A, especially when Laura let us all know that Aaron fell asleep! But what a great comeback he had! Loved all of it! I did check Amazon for the Felco products, and like you said, none were sold by Felco, also, there were a LOT of reviews about receiving knock offs. There were a lot of reviews that said they actually received Felco items, too. It sounds like if you order on Amazon you're taking a gamble getting the correct product. I do plan on getting some though. Russell was really wanting the attention, and the pillow! Too cute! Thank you so much for doing these recaps! Thank you for taking time to answer people's questions and stuff. You're very busy person so it's a little surprised that you do this.
And if anybody reads this your yellow rose is probably a knockout rose It's an actual brand and I'm going to keep saying this until somebody reads it lmao.

We cut to 6” from ground and mulch with leaves here in northwestern Vermont. They don’t start growing here until mid to late May and start blooming in mid July. We put lots of compost around them in the spring as they are heavy feeders when they start growing. We are zone 5a.

You’re an amazing person. You answer snarky questions/comments with such grace. Even if you feel differently inside. 😜 I think more ladies, like myself, find you to be a great example. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

So glad you are looking forward to JOY things and limiting the stressful things!!! I’ve got to say life is so short and you’ve got a wonderful home and lots to look forward to with the new baby and Benjamin. We all need to look to JOYFUL...things in our lives. Thank you for that nugget reminder today.

Russell loves giving cuddles to the baby. I remember getting a puppy before my hubby deployed to Iraq. It was fall and I wore a lot of hoodies. He would climb inside of them while I was wearing it and rest inside every chance he got. Come to find out I was 4 months pregnant. He did it until he got too big to rest on top. Then he would snuggle up beside my belly and watch her move💜
10 years later we got a Bangel and history repeated itself surprise #2. Still, it never crossed my mind thinking she wanted cuddles 😂

You remind me of my grandma with the "determination and passion" for gardening. I mean soooo hard headed. Plants are a priority sometimes forgetting about safety.
Keep safe always please. Love from PH.

So happy to hear you are going with Autumn Blaze along the new lane. We have one in our back yard, here in Fostoria, Ohio. Local lore says this species was propagated by Fostorian, Glenn Jeffers. We actually went to his property to purchase ours, about 30 years ago. We get compliments on its fall color every year🍁.
Loved that Russell was in this video so much!

President of the bug club, that's awesome! I use to love daddy long legs and roly poly bugs. I do not love spiders or bugs in the house though but outside is their space so we cohabitate well.
I'm glad you and baby are doing well

Laura, you are so incredibly genuine. I've learned so much from watching your videos! As a new-ish fan since March, I've diligently watched your past videos. It's wonderful to see YOU grow in your knowledge, comfort in front of the camera, and as a person. Keep on saying 'No'! For those of us with a servant heart, it's a tough but necessary life skill.
