CORRECTION: As many commenters have pointed out, the narrator says 'FdL' throughout the video, when it should be 'FdI'. This is clearly a mistake, and we can only apologise for it - as an explanation (not an excuse), it's because in arial font a capital 'I' looks identical to a lowercase 'l'. Nonetheless, it's entirely our bad, so apologies and we hope you still enjoyed the video!
Furthermore, there's been some pushback against the idea that the Fratelli d'Italia are far-right, as we say in the thumbnail. This is fair enough - as we mention in the second half of the video, the FdI's actual policies aren't anywhere near as extreme as some of their rhetoric. Nonetheless, they're clearly on the right of European politics, and some of their politics could be fairly described as far-right', so, while there's room for debate, we don't think the label is unequivocally unfair.
All in all, apologies for the errors - we'll endeavour to do better in the future! As a final thing, we'll be discussing all this - our errors and the question of whether or not the FdI are far right - in more detail in our fortnightly podcast the Editorial over on ruclips.net/user/TLDRPodcasts, so if you want to see us apologise even more go subscribe to that
Good apology, but it's starange to refer to one of your own as "the narrator" and that no one caught the FDL thing. Still a good video though
About the far-right thing, I’m Italian (leftist-ish) and to be honest only leftist Italians think of brother’s of Italy and salvini’s League as far-right, but most of these parties’s voters don’t see it like that, so this definition is mostly just propaganda from Italy’s left. As in any western country, fascists are more supportive of right wing parties, but in reality these parties don’t really end up enacting fascist policies.
You also described the allies of PD as “left leaning” but they are actually far-left! But I understand that you are a leftist channel so name calling and fake news are expected from you.

The centre right coalition may have a majority, but major differences exist between Meloni, Berlusconi and Salvini, especially on Russian sanctions, or European integration vs sovereigntism. And the fact that the House of Deputies and the Senate have the same power, this makes things more unstable.
Why do the two houses have the same power?
@@ryeryeryerye when Italy made the Constitution in 1947 it was wrote in it that it will be two chamber with the same power, the big difference between the two is that the Senate will represent the older people with the idea of avoid a second rise of fascism with the hope that the older one could be more wise and will oppose to it.
Personally for me this doesn't have much sense, above all in our modern days, not only because the rise of the old fascism is impossible (Meloni could be far right, but is nothing compared to the real fascism) but because after the referendum on the chamber many differences between these two went lost, so practically we Italians have two chambers with the same powers and the same duties, that do the same things and are elected in the same way, just because in Italy we like do nosense things.
@@ryeryeryerye they can both serve as a control over the other one, since it's really rare to have a clear majority in both Camera and Senato. On the other hand, this also means that the process of making laws is longer and, most of the time, those laws are watered down

@@fungo6631 by sympathetic you mean the party was initially formed by Mussolini's fascist party members after ww2 but have since had multiple leadership changes and become conservative and lost the fascist elements, thats it.
If that makes them fascists then wouldn't the same logic apply to the US's Democratic party since historically they were the party of slavery, segregation and the KKK?
Or is it just that left wing parties are allowed to have ugly pasts but not the right because "rules for thee but not for me"?
As an Italian i was pretty ignorant about their policies and, from how many people call her a fascist i thought they consisted of anti-abortion laws and racist stuff but apparently she's not all that bad. I agree with her wanting to make more people procreate since we are losing people on average and some of her economic policies make sense.
I disagree with the anti-LGBTQ+ ideas and with her wanting to diminish welfare but that's obvious since I'm more left-leaning.
I'm especially glad that she's not a radical Euro-hater since our economy's alredy having problems with the EU so i can't even imagine how bad it would be without it.
I'm glad the party has moderated itself , people calling it a fascist party probably comes from its facist past
They call her fascist because she was a member of the party that was founded by the political heirs of italian fascism in 1946, and her party has many of such people.
She's already made claims on some Croatian territories - Istria and Dalmatia, to be specific. Territories that did spend some time in history under Italian rule, when Italy was able to take them by force, but they spent the vast majority of time as part of Croatia. This is the same logic as Putin's - whatever was ours at any point in history is just ours and we need to take it back. As for thinking she's not a radical euro hater - she needed to walk back some of her more radical beliefs prior to the elections. Why people actually believe her is beyond me. She's a democratically elected fascist in the heart of Europe. Wars usually happen when people pretend someone who's obviously bad "isn't that bad". I hope this won't be the case here.
It's Letta and other people who are trying to sabotage her difficult task ahead. I agree with you. The problem is that over 5 years ago she was more extreme, she's changed, but people still label her as fascist. She supports the EU, but the EU does not support her, and the EU is making a mistake attacking. The EU should welcome her party and work with her.
lol, seeing that Italy is going fascist again and is claiming territories makes me laugh hard. The last time they tried that in ww2 failed so badly. Poor Adolf though Italy will be useful. Luckily they weren't. Open your history books and learn from your mistakes. Do not repeat. Stay on racism and anti LGBT agenda and don't go into claiming lands or smt because bad things will happen again...

I would like to know what the Left now clarifies someone being "Far Right" and what policies they'd need to support to become "Far Right", if it's simply curbing immigration and refusing to pay attention to identity politics then that's definitely not Far Right. If it's a party wanting to commit something against a race then that obviously is. But none of the "Far Right" parties that the Left claim them to be actually advocate that.
Honest question: what makes these guys far right? It all seems standard right leaning policy. The biggest thing being the immigration policy, or more precisely illegal immigration policy. I generally lean centre left but calling these guys far right leaves no room for actual far right parties and policies.
They want to get rid of gay civil unions (only form of marriage allowed in Italy), not only are they anti-immigration but they are actively racist, willing to let thousands die at sea as Salvini did before, and ready to make legal immigration from those countries even more difficult. The party is literally descended from the fascist party in the 30's and has direct descendants from Mussolini in it. They are the most far-right party in Italy, they just know not to say it out loud because what idiot would actually say "hey guys I'm a fascist". Please think more critically
Her political base is the social Italian movement, forza nuova and CasaPound all declared fascist parties
I 'm scared of the people that supports Meloni, most of them are fascist ( actual ones), They will feel strong with the government support. I foresee more violence in the streets toward immigrants , "illegal" as you say and non they don't really distinguish between them. Also human rights and women rights and , as Meloni made clear , abortion right is already at peril .

It's funny how center-right is labeled as "far-right" and even extremist these days.

Europe for Europeans
The Brothers of Italy will more than likely face the same trend as all other parties have in Italy. They're popular for a short time, then infighting with coalition partners, followed by another technocratic government being installed. As an Italian, I am completely baffled by my country. How can such a dysfunctional mess be one of the largest economies in the world? As you said, it defies explanation.
@@rhubarbjin at the same time there is never a dull moment. Always fascinating!
I've enjoyed watching Salvini getting back-stabbed, front-stabbed, and side-stabbed all at once in the course of the last day or two...And that's _before_ the lega even has to officially state their support of Meloni as prime minister.
But yes, chances are they won't be able to get too far with their program, which I being more left-leaning am grateful for. They scare the shit outta me.
I'm Italian, and the best answer I thought to this issue is that, while our national government is often unpredictable, many Italian regions have really efficient and stable local governments, in which the same party has been in power for decades implementing all the necessary reforms, applying for EU funds and using the devolved powers granted by the Constitution in the best possible way. Some of these regions are traditionally governed by the right (Lega has been monopolizing Lombardy and Veneto for decades now) or the left (Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, which is probably the best-governed region together with Trentino-South Tyrol).
Regions are in charge of services such as local public transport, healthcare, as well as economic planning. Some of the poorer southern regions, like Calabria, Molise or Sicily, have been haunted by corruption and mismanagement for decades.
Something similar could be said about many municipal governments: Milan and my hometown Rimini, for example, have been really well-governed for years, they have a state of the art urban planning and public transport built using EU funds, good schools, cultural initiatives and so on. Rome, on the other hand, is a total mess in any way.
In fact we had very little economic progress since the 90s which reflects the dysfunction in the government.
You mean center-right, as you refer to the opposition as center-left.
These charges are ignorant and furthermore hypocritical. For one thing, if we are playing the guilt-by-association game, Italy’s center-left Democratic Party, which came in second, was the Italian Communist party until 1991. It wasn’t just a Socialist or Social Democratic party of the common European variety-it was the official, Soviet-affiliated, Josef Stalin-endorsed, Italian Communist party.
‘Stalin endorsed’

Brothers of Italy still uses fascist symbolism from their predecessors. The Democratic Party have revoked all of that (cringe)

You seem to have weird definition of what is far-right. Everything seems to be far-right if it's not leftist government.
Is fascism far-right? Yes. Is national conservatism far-right? No, but it's close. FdI is both, so...
This is why FdI is far right.
They have neofascist roots, with some of the members celebrating the 100th anniversary of the march on rome.
Their party slogan is "God, Motherland, Family" (Dio, patria, famiglia) which is a fascist slogan.
They've stated that Mussolini was a great leader for Italy (admittedly Winston Churchill did say the same, but that was before Mussolini had done anything more than just be the leader of a militia that terrorized and killed political opponents and anyone who disagreed with fascism).
They want to bring back mandatory military service.
They want to undo years of progress in human rights.
And this is just what I remember off the top of my head.

It’s clearly designed to spread out power, like the US and German systems.
You think this is convoluted? Have you heard of the Lebanese electoral system?
It is similar to the German system. It's meant to ensure both regional as well as political representation.
It's an attempt to keep both proportional representation and local representation+governability. I hate it because I hate first-past the post systems, it should definitely be ranked choice.

Yeah funny how nothing is centre right or far left
Because there are no real socialist parties nowadays, or non in power anyway. Real left are the various communist parties. The left are usually center-left parties, that still uphold all capitalistic principles, jut add a little bit of socialist politics to the mix.

Good for Italy.
Historically and contemporary, reality says very bad for Italy.
Modern conservatism almost never improves anything save the riches pocketbooks, and utterly corrodes the nation itself while paying lip service to nationalistic ideals. This is true in the usa, uk, europe, asia, the list gos on and on.
I think there was maybe ONE decent conservative government this century so far in angela merkel's germany, and even that had deep flaws.
maybe they will be the trend breaker, i highly doubt it.
It is Fratelli d'Italia, so it is not FDL, But FDI.
FDL actually sounds like a really good party. We'll see how they perform once in office
FdI stays for "Fratelli d'Italia" ("Brothers of Italy", the First letters of the National anthem), while FDL (repeated many times) means nothing. The speaker can't understand a single Word of Italian.
this is proof real men still exist in italy... sweden too
Actually it's fdi not fdl. Often written F (uppercase) for "Fratelli, d (lowercase) for "di", I (uppercase) for "Italia".
Even though F stands much more fittingly for Fascists
The uppercase I looks the same as the lower case l except when you read it.
Could you name anything fascist about her policies or her own revealed intentions for the country? I ask bc i think the media is lying again, as I couldn't find any evidence of the claim. Unless it was things that don't hold up when measuring oneself by the same standard. (e.g. what someone said in passing when they were 19; or Dems being the party of slavery; PM Julia Gillard (my fave PM) winning the election & fear she is going to be a communist, bc she was one in college).
I mean, don't you realize how common it is to "lie for the sake of your cause" by journalists? And are you either deliberateoy or inadvertently doing the same?
Then there is common manipulative approach in these cases: "If anyone wants to tell a truth that doesn't suit what I want, they must have the same evil intentions". As if Truth based on evidence is bad unless it fits one's own cause.
How about just show me the evidence, since I already looked for it? I found a 90's Conservative, not a 30's Fascist. I feel you are lying for the sake of a cause, but it is possible you also know something i don't.
I'm really talking about the common attitude that "casual lying is fine" for some excuse, that seeking or telling the truth doesn't itself matter. In the past two months I twice found out that what i had been saying for years was false or quite probably false, and in one case it fit what I really wanted so it is hard to give up.
Thanks.
@@pebblepod30 do you know Giorgia Meloni's story?
Do you know that FdI was born because its founders did not like the excessively moderate policy by the right wing coalition that included the Northern League?

Then recently, I agree with you, the she has been trying to present herself to the masses as more moderate, to me this is just a political calculus to be more appealing. To add to the video, one of Meloni's big policy is to enact a constitutional reform to turn the country into a presidentialist republic. Now, it seems that she won't have enough seats to enact this by herself, but it is very possible that her government will enact a big, structural reform of the Constitution, especially if she'll be able to reach an agreement with the opposition parties in Parliament

Far right seems to be a common way for leftists to describe it... How did the far left convince people it was the center?
They just keep moving the Overton window.
Very true. In the US, the left called people like George Bush and Mitt Romney “far right”, then came Trump, and no one believed them because they had called the past 3 GOP candidates far right.
Pretty much because proper left in Italy is practically nonexistent at the moment.
