      Oh my gosh, right?! Another subscriber said it best, she is so strong to be able to do that. I would never be able to bring myself to do that. But I think too, like she said the alternative is alot worse having injured goats, getting stuck in fencing or worse. I also. I also imagine that a larger sized buck (is that what an adult breeding male goat us called?) would/could be dangerous to people if they still had their horns? Or I guess any goat that still has its horns could be dangerous to people or other animals. Someone commented that their grandparents had a friend who's horse was disemboweled by a horned goat. So unfortunate 🥺

    Crystal, although difficult to watch, the video expels the ‘fear of the unknown’ and shows how quickly these babies bounce right back post procedure. And for me, that was the most important. Even in between burning each bud, he calmed right down, responding to your voice and soothing touch. He wouldn’t have done that were he in excruciating pain. And seeing them all together in their playground, jumping all over you and pushing each other out of the way for mama cuddles, is evidence of their rapid turn-a-round and lack of traumatic memory.

      Same, my parents and I are starting our own homestead so we're trying to learn all we can (the good and the bad) so we can do the best we can for our goats. I think as horrible as it might be (disbudding) it's a 'necessary evil.' I've heard so many horror stories about goats with intact horns. I'm just glad the pain caused by the procedure is temporary. Much better than the alternative. It's a shame because their horns are magnificent and beautiful plus give them added protection as well as a way to regulate their body temperature. If there weren't any risks, I'd leave them.

    Thank you for this video. We had to disbud a couple doelings today as their new owners had requested it. They aren't for show, but for the safety of the goats and their kids. This was our first time. We watched many videos and even watched a couple others firsthand about a month ago. I also ordered another burner as I see the benefit in having that smaller size. Yes, they sound like they're dying, but then they go back to mama and get something to eat and some comfort.

    Thanks for this information!! I'm going to have to disbud ours this year & not looking forward to it, this gives me some peace of mind when the time comes. Its funny because thats how I restrain our cats to trim front claws. They don't mind anymore bc I trim them once a week as they are indoor cats. Our bucks (3) all have been disbudded before I owned them, but their horns still grew in as they matured. I was pretty bummed out! It wasn't a thorough enough job disbudding unfortunetly. I'm glad you showed a better way to do it! We had a Nubian get caught in a fence roll & that was NOT a fun experience! My husband wasn't home (she outweighs me) & had to be flipped onto her side- she fought hard. Finally got the fence cut to where I could pull her head out of the fence roll. I bought her in milk with 1 of her doelings & she's a 3 year old doe so her horns were already established. There's no way to get those off now unfortunately! Her doeling was disbudded & she's a nice girl though. Needless to say after that I DO NOT WANT HORNS on any of my goats.

And you can see how much you care for your animals in all that you do. I appreciate all the work you put into your videos. It's helped me a lot in understanding goats. We don't have any yet, but doing as much cramming with research as I can beforehand. Hoping for this spring/summer. Along with Weed em & Reap, your channel has helped immensely! Feeling more confident every video I watch. Thank you!

    Thank you for this, I’ve found this and your CDT shot video so helpful. Do you not need to put a cream or spray on the burned area after?

    Understanding the why helps me with the reasoning and the need. Afterwards, with success, I can see that the little ones are OK.
    Thanks for sharing with us the reality of what must be done in order to have show goats and safe goats who don’t use their horns to hurt each other.

    Absolutely my most hated chore to do. However we did have a horned goat get the corner of my daughters eye with her horn. She wasn't being mean she was just swatting a fly. For us it is much better in the long run and of course you can't show without it. Very well done video.

    You are doing that for their safety and others around them. It's safety. Sometimes you have to do sucky crap but it's what's best. Everyone watching should understand. It's not pleasant for anyone. You stay strong and I know it's done out of love. Lodi "Look what I can do" 4 President 2020!!! I fully plan on writing her in at election time!!! Lol

    I'm so glad I found your channel! I bought two goats last year because I wanted them😂😂😂I have horses and my family has cattle so I'm not completely a fish out of water... however I didn't actually know that you have to trim there hooves, so glad I found your videos. What clipper did you use in that video? Also i bought a liquid to dehorn/debud but apparently I panicked and washed it off because she started screaming...so unfortunately she has horns now...and she gets stuck in the fence daily🙄. Is there a way as a yearly to get rid or file the horns so they are safer?

      You can band them, I have a vet who puts them to sleep cuts and then burns them,

    This is so incredibly helpful. I can't even tell you. Thank you so much for making this video.
    It feels so much better knowing they go back to normal right after. It's almost a relief knowing that. Do you ever give them pain meds preemptively? I have 4 to do and it's making me sick to my stomach thinking about it. I have a guy who's been doing it forever that's going to teach me on his but then I've got to do my own. I'm terrified I'm going to mess it up

    Thank you for making such detailed videos! This is the same method my goat vet showed me back around 2011. Only difference is I also put a rolled up towel under the chin and tuck front legs back. Our least favorite chore for sure. I will for sure others to your videos!

    Thank you! It's my least favorite thing to do on the farm! I have always done the figure eight approach on the bucks but very interested in using the pygmy tip in the center...have you done the figure eight approach before? Just curious because one of my bucks I disbudded last year still has scurs and thinking maybe he wouldn't had I done it this way with the pygmy tip. As always thank you! It's not fun but it's just part of what has to be done. 😉

    Thank you so much for showing this. I really used to think that it was horrible and a lot more complicated than that. It didn't look at all as bad as I was imagining. I really need to do this with our new kids. Do you know at how old you shouldn't do it?

    Aww...absolutely, 100% necessary, but oh, I sure feel for you Crystal! I HATE disbudding with a passion, but not as much as I hate the danger those horns represent.
    Actually, I detest debudding so badly that I finally sold off the last couple of het does in our little herd to a couple of friends who’ve been dying to buy those two lovely girls off me. (😢) Hated to give them up but I’ve been trying hard to weed out the hets, and I’m very fortunate to have an excellent N breeder friend about an hour away who’s been a massive help with me for finding the lines I wanted. (They’ve been breeding their lines for over 50 years now)
    Just bought three of her 2019 3rd gen Pp N doelings yesterday & plan to breed them when ready to our mutual friend’s Pp N buck. We decided early on that we didn’t want to keep breeding bucks if possible, but it all worked out in the end as my neighbour likes to have them, and we’ve worked out a system where she usually takes the a potential show buckling or two in exchange for breeding fees. The rest of the buckings that aren’t sold for showing/breeding are kept here as wethers for both company & eventual “wether camp” 😉
    Hope everyone’s doing well there. ❤️

    Hey Crystal, great video! I have a question about the tip size. I used the 1/4 inch last year like you and ran into the same problems, is the bigger iron you use now the .55? When I look up the 1/4 (not pygmy tip) it shows the same size that I used last year and it doesn't look like the one you showed in the video.

    If you have ever had a bad burn you know that it only hurts for a few seconds after that the nerve endings are dead. They protest more about being held down than the burning itself. I hate doing it and thankfully my husband helps me but it definitely needs to be done. We don't show goats but we have a couple that can get an attitude and will bump you with their heads and rub their heads on you. We will never not dehorn our babies.

    • @BlueCactusDairyGoats
      @BlueCactusDairyGoats  4 года назад +3

      Exactly! It does hurt at first but quickly the nerves are killed from the heat and the restraint is their main complaint!

    Hi crystal! What about the figure 8 method for bucklings? People swear that doing it is essential for the boys so they don’t get scurs.. I did 2 bucklings w/ no figure 8 that’ll be weathered but I’m now worried they’re gunna get scurs. What’s your take/experience on it?

    Hi Crystal, I have a quick question that I hope you can answer.
    With your method of using the 2 sizes of disbudfing irons, do you ever have bucklings grow scurs?
    I have bought 3 bucks in my time, all disbudded, all have grown scurs.
    I am now wanting to start disbudding my own but want to do a method that has the least likelihood of scurs

    When we disbud our guys, we always have to use a fly repellent to spray on the area. It's usually silver or purple, which ever we have on hand. We also will give them some sort of supplement so that their bodies don't "over stress." Do ya'll have to use that? Or do you use anything after disbudding?

  • @jamigls
    @jamigls 3 года назад +1

    One of thing I never get from any of the videos - Do you apply pressure or let the weight of the iron do the work? Also, do you know if the Rhinehart buck tip works (so you don't have to burn twice on bucks for that figure 8?). I'm also curious, I tried to count (maybe 8-10 seconds?)... how long do you hold the iron on? I've seen many different counts.

    Hey! About to order the electric dehorners you suggested/linked to amazon. One is currently out of stock but my question is that one amazon link led to the x30 1/4 and the other x30 3/8 but your RUclips description says they are both x30 1/4 (one the Pygmy size). If I want to use the same dehorners you use, is it a 1/4 and 3/8? On a google search I could not find a 1/4 and also 1/4 Pygmy. Any input is greatly appreciated!!
