What is it with all the movie remakes? Recently the media has been flooded with articles and trailers announcing the new remake of a classic movie/story And you may think well Hollywood has run out of ideas… but is that really the case? Or are they just always trying to make there old movies better?

I think the problem is that they are not remakes - the studio is not trying to remake the film, rather capitalise off the old one. In the 'good remakes' examples you mention, they were not successful due to the old ones - unlike what some remakes nowadays are trying to do. I thinks that that is the difference between good and bad remakes.

@@AbbieRee Hollywood is no longer in the movie making business. It's now in the intellectual property licensing business.
They are not remakes. They are trying to rewrite history. In another 100 years, after a couple of generations have passed, people will think these remakes or the originals. The originals will be cancelled because they will be considered problematic.

I think most of the people calling stuff "woke" are complaining that the movie feels inorganic, as if it was following a soulless corporate checklist of diverse things. Like that there needs to be a certain kind of a strong female character, and strong male characters need to me emasculated by women, and there needs to be a character that's gay or at least implied to be gay, and there needs to be racial diversity even if it doesn't make sense for the story's setting/time period, etc... It often seems that studios focus on the checklist more than on ensuring the scripts don't feel as if they were written by AI.

The word “Woke” has lost most all real meaning in discourse. Has become a Alt-political mantra, gleeful rejection of any & all social Justice rhetoric … a lazy, intentionally ambiguous idea killer. Sometimes in context, the expression “woke” can provide meaning … when one an see beyond all the sophistic, unintellectual shorthand now attached to the word. Would be far better to actually use wording that is not so charged … and presently functionally, sincerely communicative. To me hearing “Woke” is like fingernails on a chalkboard or the sound of a distant automobile accident … but I supposed to converse in confused “woke” rhetoric for the foreseeable future … please can we just say what me mean?

Good video. I’m black and I’ve always thought it was a little condescending when I would read that I can’t enjoy a character that doesn’t look like me. I think a lot of race and gender swapping has become excessive. It is a bit lazy to say “take old story and make them black”. At this point if a creator wants diversity I’d rather see them make an original story. But you are right about the writing being crucial and allowing you to look past it. Good channel and videos so far.

It is condescending, it's borderline insulting. Imagine basically telling a little black girl that she's not allowed to identify with a white princess, and the only way to make that happen is for her "saviours" to make a version that she is allowed to empathise with

Totally agree - some series just need to die. Stop at the right time and don't try to force it past that. It just saddens me to see film studios try to milk a franchise no matter what. There are also franchises where the main actor is what makes the movie, so once the actor is out, the movies should end. For example, Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford as the main character doing his thing, just shouldn't exist. Don't make any new movies or remakes, just let us enjoy the old movies and leave us be.

My favorite remake was Alita: Battle Angel. The reason being the maker did not change anything from the original story.

5:38, yes but only if we use a very expansive definition of the word “remake”. I liked Spider-Man:No Way Home which was essentially a live action version of Into the Spider-Verse. And I liked The Avengers (2012) which was essentially a live remake of the 2005 animated movie Ultimate Avengers. Beyond that the 2016 live action version of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling was a rare Disney remake that I thought that was decent but that was mostly because it was directly adapting the source material rather than simply remaking the Disney animated version

I worked for Disney animation for 3 years and it was like a golden nightmare. In-other-words - the pay was good but, the politics, psychological mind games and the general aura of gloom are the reasons Disney Entertainment is on its last legs. I'm happy I wont be there for it.

It's not a direct remake but Blade Runner 2049 is a beautiful film.
Also, another reason why studios make less original stories is because of the death of the DVD.
Comedies and dramas would at least break even with DVD sales. But with the tide of streaming services the DVD was swallowed and so was the lower budget original film.
Netflix is probably the biggest reason for the constant remakes.

There's so many remakes. I've watched something thinking it's original just to find out it's another remake. Combine that with the same plots being used repeatedly, it just feels like you've seen it all before.

The problem with remakes is they are a safe bet, disney is a worse example not only because their live-action remakes are based off of their movies rather than the source materials which is the books and the problem of updating them for a modern audience.
0:23, the Johnny Depp remake of Willy Wonka had a reason for existing which was to be closer to the book than the Gene Wilder version was but then undermined it by making it about how Wonka was even worse than the kids and having to be the one to learn a lesson. And honestly, the book has a sequel (Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator) they could just try adapting that.

Your last argument about existing IP is spot on! The fourth Die Hard movie was an original script. It was then later reworked to include the already known main character of John McClane and his daughter!

I used to work at a movie theater. People would complain about too many remakes literally as they were giving me money to go see a remake.

I think the reason we get so many remakes is because Hollywood think it's a quick cash grab and will make them some money because it's a story people are familiar with. Nobody wants to take a chance on new fresh original ideas anymore. I see it in comics all the time, after all how many Batman comics did DC put out last year :P

the planet of the apes is the perfect example of how to reboot a franchise/ remake movies and the worst example too. The trilogy that came out in the 2010s is an amazing reimagined version and the tim burton remake in 2001 is hot garbage, they remade the original but made it super weird

Cape Feare, Nosferatu the Vampyre, King Kong, The Mummy (2000) are great remakes. They were made with love in mind and the quality shows itself. The difference of B&W and color eras, lend itself to creative directions, and the writers chose to write new characters/plotlines instead of reliance on old.
Most remakes are pointless, a sign of creative bankruptcies and pandering to consumer nature. But filmmaking is a casino. John Carter flopped hard and Beauty and the Beast made money. Any business with a brain would chose a safer revenue stream than listening to the critics whining about it.

There hasn't been a remake of The Prisoner of Zenda in almost 3 and no remake of Beau Geste in almost 5 decades. Remaking these movies has a long tradition. Why did they stop doing it?

My main frustration with disney remakes is the fact that they try to recapture the same magical essence that which made their classic movies so damn amazing. Yet they provide unnecessary additions and remove charms of the movie which made the original fantastic. If disney truly wants to re live its glory days then why not re-release their films instead of providing tiring and frustating remakes that leech off their original movies elements.

A Good story, whether it is one film/book/one-off TV episode, or multiple films or books etc, knows when to end.

Hollywood no longer takes a risk & can’t make anything original anymore & show’s American in decline Hollywood show’s that mirror of place people & society. You could say the same thing with the BBC or Sky it’s all been done & Hollywood is no longer the hip & cool place to be anymore. The strong Male characters of the past are all gone. The beautiful pin up model actress who set the fashion are now all gone also & they have lost their charm. Plus the Directors are weak & so are the writers plots & story’s & people have sort entertainment span now. There is nothing to be inspired, or shock or amazed at anymore from Hollywood it’s all,Been done & dusted anyone can open a big studio in Dubai now & make movie they don’t need Hollywood anymore.

The remake phenomenon has been an attempt to monopolise nostalgia and it was largely successful in an era where remakes were looked forward to but the exceptions. Now there are few new IPs that generate the buzz (due to the "no more artists in Hollywood" problem) so the remakes generate the buzz. You can't recapture the magic in most remakes, it is hard enough in new films. *But* franchises with pre-established fanbases is seen as built in money.
Built-in fans only exist if there is built-in quality now but Hollywood keeps churning them out. 👀

I quite liked the other Snowhite movie that came out in 2012, Mirror mirror. When I hear a lot of the complaining about the original Disney's Snowhite I'm always wierded out, because we had several movies about the fairy tale where they don't have Snowhite be save by the prince, and they are still acting as if that is somehow a novel idea. In "Mirror, mirror" she is the one that kisses the prince to break a spell, the movie plays a lot with the story but in a fun way, instead of the dark/chosen one narrative that huntsman used, plus the costum design is great, I don't think any of the disney remakes come close to it.

In my humble opinion it's premature to go for longer formats. A new channel needs to build an audience before it has enough people willing to sit through an hour-long monologue. These short, to-the-point videos are perfect for now and it seems to be working

@@reezlaw I don't know, ofc it is not my channel, so I can't and won't say what should or not be done, but there are channels out there that have started with long content from the beginning and are doing alright, in the modern world where there's content EVERYWHERE I think the best thing to do would find a niche audience that wants to listen what you want to do (And I happen to be one that enjoys long, spread and detailed content), but ofc it depends in what she wants to do, not in what I want to have.
Its not Hollywood's fault. Consumers reward same old stuff and punish truly original stuff.

honestly this p!sses me off so much. lotr, twilight, hunger games, disney classics, willy wonka, the office... like STOP 😭 we need NEW stories. what is going on. it's so soulless. in stead of trying to recreate something like the lightening in a bottle that was old disney or lord of the rings... try to reach for the stars and make another lightening in a bottle with something new. there are limitless stories to tell. yet we never get anything new.

The main reason is most certainly the fact that new IPs are just not succeeding with today’s audiences, so studios just stick to remaking established IPs or sequels. ‘The Creator’, for example, is an original sci-fi movie that was released back in September, the problem is that it flopped at the box office. It wasn’t a sequel nor a remake of an existing property, but it’s failure at the box office would suggest to studios that taking risks on these new IPs isn’t worth taking. If more people would be wiling to watch original/new IPs, then studios would take more chances releasing them in theaters. But it’s more profitable nowadays to stick to IPs with built in fan bases like Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter etc… hence all the remakes and sequels. Essentially my point is; when possible, support new IPs when they release in theaters.

I think Disney has a creative problem and a decision problem. Creatively I think they are exhausted or just have no time to think of something new because of the dozens of projects they have already been working on which they did not have enough time for already. Hence the strikes. The decision problem is I think the wrong people are making the 'creative' choices. The executives have all the projects decisions when it used to be given to the director and execs used to just guide. The executive board has just become disconnected to what the audience wanted and it has become what the company thinks the audience should want.

Dredd is great, but yeah again it's a reimagining. Honestly I think we should only be remaking bad movies that had a good premise, so that they can be better movies; remaking good movies will always mean they need to match greatness instead of improving on the original.

They think they're appealing to the next generations moral worldview and creating future classics. Disney doesn't realise their box office hits *become* classics. You don't get slow burning hits that accrue a cult classic fanbase in a world of media oversaturation. It is obvious, or should be. For companies motivated by profit, they sure do seem to throw out the present context in which they make things, I suppose that's why they over rely on the existing success and popularity of a franchise.
This is going to sound strange...
We live in an age of computer influence and corporate power. These two forces are in league as never before. And what do computers do best in a creative space like movies? Analyze existing products. Computer analysis will never spit out an idea that isn't derivative. Basically, computer "creativity" is limited to plagiarizing human art.
This is where we are as a species.

The film industry these days is run by investors and corporate suits, rather than artists. Artists are bold and take risks with their work, whereas investors are risk-averse and make it their intention to choose the safest option; (in this case, remakes and reboots). Why create something new and original when you can heat up the leftovers and still make bank?
The decline in the DVD/Blu-ray market has also contributed to this current creative dark age for cinema. Matt Damon talked about it on an episode of Hot Ones before. Essentially, mid-budget movies were allowed to exist because even if they bombed in theatres, they could still make their money back in DVD sales. But seeing as that's a non-existent option now (thanks to streaming), studios would rather opt for the formulaic route as opposed to gambling on some weird idea that may or may not work.
There's also a case to be made that some of these movies could be money laundering schemes as well (just look at Disney's 2023 theatrical output alone, and it's no wonder people are asking that question). The good news though, is that audiences are growing increasingly apathetic towards this business practice and are actively demanding original stories again. A24 and Barbenheimer's success can certainly be attributed to that

I just wish remakes were more creative with it, instead of trying something new and exciting it's usually the same thing just newer cast.

Another great video and the answer to why there are so many remakes being made is short, honestly, and that is: ''the mid budget films are pretty much dead in Hollywood, every film now has an INSANE budget, and they don't wanna take a risk on an unproven concept. Nostalgia guarantees buts in seats and money being spent, so instead of doing something revolutionary like a The Matrix that blew people away at the time, they remake The Lion King and make millions. A lot of this has also to do with that a lot of people are blind consumers who don't think about what they are gonna see, see a familiar name and go see it.''
The same stuff is happening in gaming and even in music as most mainstream music now is just the same sounding trash as it's a proven concept to be successful. We're stuck, and the entertainment industry is being run by talentless hacks who prefer to put activism in their films over creativity or revolutionary ideas. Yes, you still have originally and creativity, but most of it is formulaic nonsense and imo, films, games and music peaked a long time ago (2009 comes to mind).
Again great vid and you're a great content creator, a great speaker and a wise person! Or should I say, you're a very ''strong female content creator''. 😅
PS: CGI sure as sh*t hasn't got any better, it has gotten WAAAY worse. Look at The Matrix and compare that to the most recent Matrix film. Or look at something like Transformers 1/3 and look at modern day Marvel CGI. Nah, CGI is awful and they don't mash practical with CGI any more (think of something like Titanic where they made a giant set of the whole ship, did miniature and used CGI when needed and it still looks amezing).
And yes, ''wokeness'' is definitely part of why these remakes keep failing and is what South Park made a brilliant episode about, mocking it. I mean, take that recent Indiana Jones film you talked about. It's called Indiana Jones, yet most of the film is about this new ''strong female'' character, mocking him, out smarting him, doing all the action he used to do, while making him look like a complete idiot. Same with the most recent James Bond who can get no girls anymore, who now has a kid and is overly emotional. I think Critical Drinker has made some perfect videos about this, but woke/Forced diversity and feminism in films is definitely a reason people don't wanna see them. Like, a lot of these franchises are made big because of their male fan bases, so why trash talk and belittle the people who watch your movies?! I'm no fan of Barbie and think the film is a gross misrepresentation of reality and has a weird message in the final scenes, but at least it was a film made for women, by women and it wasn't something like Indiana Jones that was made for mostly men, now forcing in feminism into the mix.

I think the issue with remakes (specifically Disney's) is two things. 1st they are remaking movies that still hold up to modern standards.
Little Mermaid, Mulan, Aladdin and many others despite being older than me can still be watched and enjoyed today, heck my nephews love these old animated movies. So despite how much technology has advanced I dont think its enough to upgrade the visuals to justify it.
Compare that to Williy Wonka vs Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where filming technology had increased to such an extent that there was a reason to go see it even if it was the same story, after all thats why we watch movies being made on books its nice to have that visual and audio feeling.
The second issue is most of these movies suffer by specifically a remake of the Disney Version of these stories. Remember the year we got three Pinocchio movies?
Two were garbage but one was really good despite it being a completely original story. While the Mulan remake was garbage it had the most potentially being very different from the Disney animated one and I was optimistic about it.
I to this day think that Cinderella is the best Disney live action remake because it has a pinch of the animated original but tells the story in a different way, expanding on the prince, making the stepmother more sympathetic and a few other bits. I wouldn't say its better but at least its a different experience compared to say Littler mermaid or Beauty and the beast where the changes they do make dont justify to see it over the original and in plenty of ways it feels inferior.
Finally on the woke stuff "Go woke go broke." Has been a popular phrase that for the most part isnt true and plenty of things that one could call woke are still fantastic. I love Arcane and its about a STRONG female lesbian trying to save her sister, hard to get more woke then that right?
I think at the end of the day the reason they are failing is being preachy and hamfisting these messages and it stings even more when its done with a property most of us grew up with.

I'm not gonna lie seeing someone representing me or my culture in the screen is so much joy for me.
So I definitely agree diversity is a force for good. But the way most Hollywood companies handled is not being organic and being integral part of story. They just want to use diversity for marketing and use it for their own company benefits. I get why people fed up with it and use the term "Woke". Essentially Hollywood making something positive hollow for their own benefits. However I think we see some of the racist and despicable people using this just criticism as their own benefits. Which result to so much unnecessary negativity online.

I agree with you the diversity in recent media is great! But like you said sometimes it does come off a bit like they only do it for marketing purposes which is just completely wrong.

This is old now, but Ocean's Eleven (2001) is wildly better than the original.
Recent movie remake I like….has to be Kong Skull Island. It grabbed my attention from the intro and never let go. The music, the acting, like the suspense. It was well done. The other was the 1990s Mummy, as such a lomg time has passed between the original Karloff Mummy that, it just worked. A third one for me would be Fast and th3 Furious? Why? They make bank and put butts in seats and they don’t have to worry about plot, character development or anything. They sent a car into space and made money off of that nonsense. Everyone else had to try. Fast and the Furious just needs to show up.

Anyway, I'd say that most of the people I hear use 'woke' to mean shoe-horned 'diversity' or 'social-justice'.
And, almost EVERYONE is for 'social-justice' or 'diversity' if you mean their literal meaning. For example, I want a set of characters who are rich/poor, good/evil, feminine/masculine, 'conservative'/'progressive', etc. What you might call culturally diverse (as long as it serves the story).
Different shades of skin color, for example, doesn't (at least in Hollywood) indicate diversity. Believing that people of a certain appearance are all alike is known as racism -- and believing that people can only relate to people of similar appearance is also racism, the racism of low expectations.
It's unbelievable to me how a production company has some intellectual property with a built-in fan base, all ready to go, and they do everything in their power, they go OUT OF THEIR WAY to make sure they ruin it for that audience. They make sure to disrespect the source material, they attack the fans when they object. And then they lose money and what do they do? Blame the fans again. Just to ensure they will avoid their product in the future, securing future losses as well, why not. It's just mind blowing.

If there was a fanbase for originality maybe that would change. But do "fans" change as well? Or do things remain ossified as adolescent lifestyle accessories? There's a lot of cognitive dissonance among the fanboys of sci-fi and fantasy. Everyone's complaining about today's derivative studio content, but will any of them support something new and original in the same numbers (especially if the lead isn't played by an actor named Chris or Ryan)?

For All Mankind is a show that came out in recent years, not derivative at all, not some recycled repurposed IP, and I'm loving it. The Expanse is another great example, yes it's an adaptation from books but it's not part of some old franchise and the authors have adapted it themselves, so it qualifies as original content. It's my favourite show of all time
I think they want that New Gen. Grab them with something old thats new but sometimes every generation just wants to keep the stuff the way it is. Just like you said at the beginning of the video.

I think it’s a mix of a quick cash grab (for stand alone films) and acceptable losses. Setting up a collection of films can warrant an acceptable loss in the short term if it sets up well for sequels/spin-offs and looking at the successes of other universes (i.e. your MCUs) you can see why.
Personally, I think remakes shine when there is a need for updates special effects/cinematography, such as in Dune. I’m not a fan of swapping styles from animation to live action with little alteration to the script as this feels cheap and you can expect what’s coming.
Either way, it was put well in the video and congratulations on hitting the YT algorithms!

My problem with remakes is when they exist solely to make money. Steven Spielberg remade West Side Story a few years ago and it didn’t need to be remade, but it worked because it was made by someone who cared about the story and wanted to do it right. Contrast that with the majority (if not all) of the Disney live-action remakes, which feel soulless because they’re just made to make money, not because the people remaking them are passionate about the story/ characters/ themes.
Edit: That’s also why I’m not immediately dismissive of the new Wonka. It’s written and directed by the person who made the Paddington movies, and even if it probably won’t be “the greatest achievement in cinema,” I don’t think it will feel soulless.

You make many good points and it is true, the levels of cynicism with which studios recycle stories, characters and concepts have eroded any impression that their interest is telling stories by conviction or any artistic vision. On the other hand, I also think that you should overfeed your bunny a bit, so it gets a bit chubby and therefore extra cute.

It's not that diversity itself isn't a good idea, it's that, like everything else, there's a time and place for it, and that concept has basically been ignored lately in favor of a force-feeding approach. Moreover, what we're being force-fed is so tiresomely similar - look up how many red-headed characters have been systematically replaced by black characters lately; it's like every single one of them is being wiped out for some reason. Look how many stories have had gay or trans characters crowbarred into them in painfully unnecessary ways. It's the same damn thing over and over and over again. Diversity stops being valuable as a concept when its execution is not, in itself, diverse.

Being cheeky with a second comment, but in regards to the whole "wokeness" stuff and why these remakes are perceived as "woke", I agree that it being Woke is not the problem. If we take woke to mean just allowing for diversity and inclusivety.
Some excellent films and shows have come out recently that are very much diverse but worked a treat. Nimona on Netflix is the second best animation-film that came out this year focusing on what is a trans-character (or metaphor for one at least), but it explores the nuances of it to create a deeply sympathetic character. Or take THE best animation of the year, Across the Spiderverse. Enough said there.
But if by Woke one means Corporate activism, which is a litttle different, then it is a problem. I think these more diverse remakes are failing more because we can feel the Corporate oversight in every scene. We can tell it was done not out of passion but out of a desire to make money. Which no one minds if they made something good. But it is so soulless you can tell they just want a cheap win instead of a genuinely good story.
Can you make reviews on your favourite films or series, it can also be on movies and shows that you didn't enjoy.

With regards to the 'woke' thing, Will 'Critical Drinker' Jordan defined it as being when identity politics start hurting the product. He argued that having progressive elements should be a good thing, and that historically, people who weren't straight white men haven't been well served by movies, so correcting that is a positive thing. He's praised female-led productions like 'Queen's Gambit', 'Fall' and 'Arcane', and the gay characters in an episode of 'Last of Us'. But he argues that when activists are hired instead of writers, when a political message becomes more important than a good story, then this actually hurts the product and is a bad thing. For example, pretending Cleopatra was black in an alleged documentary, because factually she was Macedonian Greek.
Yes, there's people on the Right who would absolutely hate anything with a female, black or gay lead. But there's plenty of people who are sick of being lectured, tired of their favourite things being changed beyond recognition, and who just want entertaining stories. There are 'women of colour' like Vex Electronica and Baggage Claim who speak eloquently about this too. South Park's parody of the 'Panderverse' didn't arise in a vacuum, it caught a cultural moment of dissatisfaction.
But we've become too tribal, between 'woke' and 'anti-woke' channels, there's little discourse and discussion, and only the loudest people on both sides seem to be heard. 😑

I liked very much the video that I forgot to add an opinion comment, I think the problem with "woke" and "diversity" is that it mixes some different things happening at the same time:
1. Modern hollywood is not writing good stories, is writting cash grabs, making a good movie is hard, but in the current climate you can give your bad movie "extra points" for being diverse and reduces the criticism from people that do not want to be seem as biggots (there are actual biggots also criticizing, which does not help), some people then will eventually realize the trend and relate diversity with bad movie, when even without the diversity the movie would have been bad anyways.
2. Immersion, for people that care about storytelling, immersion important, and part of that includes culture and yes... ethnicity sometimes, that is why characters like Miles Morales are mostly loved, because he is a second spiderman, but there was care in making his background follow the logic of the story, and the social contract of immersion was not broken, so it gets accepted, if you make a viking story with non-scandinavian looking people and you do not even explain why it will break the immersion (like making a fantasy epic with a dwarf that is just a tall skinny dude with a beard, or a Hulk movie where Hulk is not green and you don't even explain why).
3. a third point would be when people shove politics down our throats in their movies, but this happens from every side of the spectrum, and sometimes it is too much and too obvious and annoying (I'm looking at you Transformers movies with the US military)
And there are a lot of diverse movies that go under the radar because they are good, or they respect the immersion. I for one, do not really care if they make Batman gay, Mr Darcy black or Julius Ceasar chinese IF you make a good story that makes and respect it's own rules

My favourite remade movie is Dune (2021) because I am a sucker for Villenueve's cinematography and also because I have neither seen Jodorowsky's attempt nor the miniseries. And I definitely haven't read the novel Dune is based on.

Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro was great I loved that one. The remakes from the 80s and 90s at least had feeling and good story not like today. That feels so weird saying being born in 99 but yeah the older movies I watch definitely have feeling and a certain charm I don't see in new stuff.
