The thing that irked me was that they separated her from her husband, which is wrong, and that they wouldn't authenticate the ball if she didn't comply. That's like a gangster shakedown. It's her ball. She should be able to sell it, it could change her life for her family. The dodgers wouldnt have a multi billion dollar franchise and be able to pay players tens of millions of dollars, if they didn't have fans like her and us to spend our hard earned money to watch them play a kids game. Have some perspective dodgers. And the timing of this couldn't be worse.

No one is stopping her from selling the ball. If she thought the deal was unfair, she should have kept the ball until the Dodgers met her demands. She was actually satisfied with what she received in the beginning, until people on social media told her how stupid she was and how much the ball could be worth. Granted, the Dodgers staff could have been more gracious, but she was just a bad negotiator. She doesn't need her husband to be there. She's not a child. You can't talk about gender equality and expect a man to save the day.

I just listened to the interview being referred to by this host. I don’t blame you Mr. Samson for commenting on that, but Ohtani never said that. You are right, the translator mistranslated his comment and misrepresented what he said. What Ohtani actually said was, “They (Dodgers officials) told me they would be able to go back there and talk to the fan and negotiate an exchange, and for me, of course it would be a special memento for the occasion so I was grateful to hear that.”

No here's another example of mistranslations. Ohtani said " I was under the
impression that "someone" that was omitted from Ohtani's speech, (again
Japanese idiosyncrasy of not specifying subject) can talk to the fan after
returning....(of what or where he trailed off and didn't specify)....." (to do what ?
      we don't know).
Translator / Interpreter will have to figure what speaker (Ohtani) means to fill
      in the dottttttt.
I translated professionally for 30 years in Bay area CA.
In this instance this new interpreter should have prodded Ohtani to be specific.
I think he's not as comfortable in his position of designated translator position
he gets nervous and freeze so only translate obvious (yet leave out important
info like subject or object) .
I still think it's quite mean spirited of this guy to connect this incident to Ohtani
being a liar. It's all in the tone of how it's delivered.

Ok, here I am a Japanese person talking. At the interview, he never said “I talked to the fan.” I directly quote what he said here. He said, “ Talked to the fan.” Do you see there’s no “I” in his sentence. We, Japanese omit a subject very often. Like when I ask my kids if they ate snacks, I would ask them, “Ate snacks?” Instead of saying, “Did you eat snacks?” Similar thing happened with Ohtani. He wasn’t sure who talked to the fan who caught so he couldn’t identify the subject in his sentence so he said “Talked to the fan.” Then the interpreters said , “I talked to the fan.” Which is a mistake but I kinda understand that the interpreter thought that Ohtani said “I talked” because the way Ohtani said it was kinda very smooth and and it was very difficult to identify who talked to the fan. Then I think that if it were Ippei, maybe he would have translated it better because Ippei would have known every single move that Ohtani makes. I mean Ippei would have known that Ohtani didn’t talk to the fan that day. Ohtani didn’t know who talked to the fan. Was it someone from the management, the security guy, or any special person to handle the home run ball ? Also, it sometimes impolite to use “someone” when referring to literally someone😅
So, explaining who someone might be in a polite way is kind of long when he doesn’t even know who it was, and the interview is usually very short, it was best for him to omit the subject in his sentence what happened that’s night. Here is what I think he really meant. “Someone from the team, I’m not sure who that person is, talked to the fan. Since it’s a special ball for me, I appreciate the fact that the ball was given to me.” One more thing. I think Ippei would have said “ i heard that someone from the team talked to the fan and he/she kindly gave me the ball.” This is what Ohtani really meant! Hopefully, the traumatized dodgers management ( from Ippes’s gamble thing) comes up and clarify what Ohtani meant. Better late than never’

There's a lot of media piling on this issue, and I don't think it's fair. First off, it's not his first HR as a major leaguer. Certainly not his last. It doesn't mark some kind of milestone number or record. Other than the fact it's with the Dodgers, what's the big deal? Just because some guy says it's worth something doesn't mean it will ever get that price in the open market.
Also, apparently, Shohei didn't say he personally met the fan. That's a translation issue that has been misrepresented.
The other issue is that we are taking the fan's word as truth. Why are we so quick to take their word for it?
Also, was the woman separated from her husband, like she had no choice, or was she asked to follow them into the stadium and the husband just didn't come? That's not clear.
And a bad bargain is a bad bargain. In the heat of the moment, people don't think ahead and just agree to what is being offered. That's not a mark on the Dodgers, although they probably took advantage of the situation. That's still bad on her. She's an adult and should be able to make her own decisions. She's not some 12 year old minor.
Finally, the Dodgers saying that they wouldn't authenticate the ball makes sense. How do you authenticate the ball? Do you have Shohei sign it (that would change the value then)? Does some Dodger official of ball authentication do something to the ball? I doubt they have some machine that puts an official serial number on the thing. And what if the woman is not trustworthy and sells a counterfeit ball that has a fake authentication mark? Then what? Do you know how many counterfeit balls might be out there? I don't think the Dodgers or most organizations have a ball authentication arm....or they don't want to get into that business, otherwise, they'll get requests left and right about authenticating this HR ball, and that HR ball, etc.
Geez, things happen. It's not always a mortal sin.

@@173jaSon371 Shohei never said he “needed” the ball. He never even said he “wanted” the ball. I’m sure life would go on if he never got the ball. It was the Dodger organization that went through the steps of trying to get the ball back, so let’s not put it one Shohei. You are also conflating the true value of the ball from its value to Shohei if he even wanted the ball. You may value your first car more than I do or anyone else, and FMV will be decided by the market if your first car was up for sale. Then again, you may not care about your first car….I don’t know, so let’s not presume it means any much more to Shohei or to the general public.

The goodies she received were not insignificant, as Samson says dismissively. Put a lid on the extremist reactions, Davey.

I want to reply to this comment I received (which i posted below, but now seems like it has been deleted?):
Bro, translators have a hard job. Ohtani obviously is choosing wisely on what he saids, which makes him pause midway into his sentences, and not clear on details.
He used the word "itadakeru", which is past tense, which means "someone else will meet" or it can also mean "willing to meet to him (ohtani)" depending on who he is talking about, which he didn't mention who.
Since we know that the fan didn't meet him from her interview, we now know that it was someone else who met her.
But if we didn't, it can be interpreted as "I was happy that she was willing to meet me".
In this situation, Will Ireton had to know before hand that someone told Shohei that someone is going to talk with the fan, to interpret correctly.
    yngnation
If you had to listen over & over again to understand that Will Ireton didn’t properly translate what Ohtani actually said, that means you don’t comprehend Japanese well enough to imply that you do. MLB needs to hire better qualified Japanese translators, instead of hiring people that only have a rudimentary, conservational knowledge of Japanese (Will & Ippei included).

That the Dodgers did this requires the Adams Family movie "Dirty Pool" gif. Also David should be the full time pinch hitter for Rich when he's away. The giving the ball thing to a fan thing bugged me a little though. You're building a relationship with that fan & that $7 will have them buying more tickets & merch and the organization will more than make up for that $7.

As a Dodgers fan for over 40 years, I'm sad to see the Dodgers screw up (again). Seems like it should be common knowledge, but they should've treated this fan much better than they did. Yeah, I know they wanted that ball for Ohtani and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg to get it back. But treated her only slightly better than they would treat a shoplifter. Bad look.
And they need to emphasize to Ohtani that he needs to be on his best behavior because of all the scrutiny he's getting after the situation with his prior interpreter. No need to lie or imply untrue things.
They need to get some people with better PR skills on their staff.

    • @NN-wl2oz
      @NN-wl2oz Месяц назад

I agree that the team should have treated the fan better. However, Ohtani never said "I met the fan". He said "まー戻って、あのー、ファンの人と話して、はい、あの、いただけるということだったので". I'm a teacher of Japanese for the Japanese, and my understanding was "after Ohtani came back to dressing room, he was told from a team staff that the fan agreed to gave the ball to him". He didn't lie or imply untrue things. He just omitted the subject and it happens all the time in Japanese. Japanese is highly dependent on context and situation. The interpreter speaks great Japanese, but not perfect... He should have clarified before to translate, but it's all too late...

They do not understand how difficult and challenging it is to interpret/translate between different languages, especially between two languages as distinct from each other as English and Japanese. Simply put, it is impossible to achieve 100% accuracy in translation, even for professional interpreters hired by diplomats for the most important international negotiations. Why? Because each language has its unique grammar system, vocabulary, etc. Cultural differences also play a role.
My mother tongue is Japanese, and I listened to the interview with Shohei. He said something like, "came back. Well, talked with the fan. Heard that can have it (まぁ戻って。あのー、ファンの人と話して。頂けるっていうことだったので。)" in Japanese. He did not specify the subjects for each verb. This might sound strange to people who only speak English, but it's actually quite normal in Japanese. We often omit subjects when we speak, which makes interpretation very challenging. Therefore, Shohei's sentence could be interpreted as "I came back, and after that, I talked with the fan. And she said she could give it to me." Alternatively, it could mean "I came back. Well, then somebody (like team staff) talked with the fan, and I heard that the fan agreed to give it back to me." Neither interpretation is incorrect, and the interpreter obviously chose the former.
As a Japanese attorney who sometimes deals with international cases, I often find myself in meetings where my client speaks only Japanese, the other party speaks only English, and an interpreter facilitates communication between them. When complete accuracy is necessary, I ask my client to (i) articulate "subjects" (such as I, we, they, he, etc.) and "objects" to avoid misunderstandings, (ii) keep sentences short, and (iii) form each sentence as a complete thought. I also advise my interpreter not to add subjects unnecessarily, to prevent any "lost in translation" issues. Therefore, the interpreter must often ask "Who did that?" to confirm the subject whenever my client omits it. This process is exhausting and time-consuming. Consequently, I believe this approach is impractical for the daily interviews Shohei typically participates in.
In conclusion, Shohei did not explicitly state that "he" talked with the fan. It was an interpretation. Furthermore, this interpretation wasn't "wrong." It was one of several correct interpretations that did not necessarily reflect Shohei's intent. I think it was, in a way, inevitable miscommunication unless the interpreter asks Shohei what was the subject (and many other components that Japanese people often omit but you need to insert when you make sentences in English) every time he omits it. And actually Shohei omits subjects quite often, it should be very challenging for the interpreter.
