To tell the difference, I just asked myself which of the two non-Les Paul tracks I liked less, and that was the Telecaster. Entirely personal opinion, but it worked every time. I find the Strat to be warmer and its high frequency output to be less grating than the Telecaster. I like my Les Paul, but more often than not the clean output slightly sound like my amp is underwater.
I have been watching a ton of guitar comparison vids and a whole load other. This video is the best of them all. Thanks so much for the very thoughtful and sensible approach and setup of this video! I have actually at the same time learned to listen to what these youtubers talk about, specifically the highs, mids and lows. This is such an eye opening, or ear opening, experience for someone who's a beginner like me. Thanks so much Paul! Liked, subscribed and notifications for your channel is on. Btw the Tele is the one for me. I will however try those three just to hear the differences live. (And its gonna have to be smoke on the water, beginner skills lol. I already feel sorry for the staff who will be suffering from my face melting rendition)
Seriously... he can't expect us to pay attention to jokes and music. We are guitarists after all. Paying attention to the music is for bass and drums ;)

well, i have 2 epiphones one texan and one epi les pau custom, i recently got a gibson les paul studio and it is a much better guitar in every way than the epi custom but the bling, and nowadays you can get a gibson for the same price than a epi custom , and they are a much better sounding and playing guitar, trust me , after you play a gibson les paul you WILL become a believer.
All these years later, I found myself looking for a comparison and I always end up back on your channel lol I have a strat, a les paul, I think I need a tele in my life.
Ryan Maiese I'm no guitarist at all but i just love to hear electric guitar ! Also i could always tell the Les Paul from the two others and than i knew the Strat was the one i enjoyed the most between the two others. I enjoy the Paul as it sound a little more " bassy " (can i say that about a guitar ? Ahahah) and the Strat is quite smooth all the way. The Tele feels a little flat to me though...
I've been playing humbuckers for ages, but in the last year or three have fallen madly in love with single coils (especially P90s)...there's nothing quite like a good Tele to let you know just how bad you're really playing lol! Great comparison, I got all but the first (I inverted the Strat and Tele)!
Am i the only one who was focusing on jokes mainly. Man those are hilarious. especially the one "when u hide your guitar in the bass case from being stolen." burn haha

I feel that if your trem was floating, the differences would be more pronounced. Strats lose their super "spongey" sound when the trem is fixed. They end up sounding like a Tele without the crystal high end, though pickup positions 2 and 4 are a dead giveaway. Your Les Paul sounds really muffled on chords, but it absolutely sings the higher notes. Makes me want to get one!
Great video and absolutely loved the jokes! I got me a Stratocaster few years ago and fell in love the very moment I grabbed it. Les Paul and Telecaster are great but I will always have that special place in my heart for Stratocaster
Such an interesting demo. I could definitely differentiate the LP on the clean songs, and often the fenders. The higher the gain got, the more difficult it became. black dog riff stumped me, and I mixed up the fenders on message in a bottle.
I'm a guitar player on a budget, so I have a mexican strat with a humbucker on the bridge. Found it to be the most versatile guitar I've ever played as the humbucker gives it oomph in the high gain but the mid and neck are still pretty nice and clear on cleaner sounds!
I prefer single coils, but it is unfair to compare them using the same effects/amps settings, as an eq will be more tuned to one type of pickup than another and can easily make the difference in clarity/brightness/mud. Good to hear the different eq curves of each, but not fair to judge the tonal range and suitable applications.
Each guitar has their own iconic sound and we all get excited when epic songs featuring each style of guitar demonstrate why those guitars are great. I don’t have the budget for each guitar (or tolerance for neck cracks - I’m looking at you Les) so the question for me is which guitar is the most versatile and allows me to never be out gunned in any style of music I am playing? My answer: the tele. Bonus point: people play tele’s to sound great and not to look cool. A guitarslinger with a road worn tele is a guitarist with a great lyrical vocabulary and tone that oozes out of their hands.
I have a 59 resissue LP and an oxblood custom shop LP. I love them. But they were honestly just buys impulse buys because I came into a bit of money and wanted investments. Both guitars are together are pretty expensive. But I honestly always go back to my fender Mexican made Baja telecaster with the custom shop twisted tele neck pick up. Or my American standard strat with fat 50's. You're right. It's all about your own ears and fingers. I find that's a guitarists individual touch has a lot to do with tone and response of the guitar. The bell like cleans in the tele neck are very hard to beat
I'm planning to purchase an EG and didn't have a clue about the differences of the three. From watching this video, I can say that I like Les Paul the most! But from where I am it's more expensive than strat and tele so I guess I've gotta stick with strat.
Could always pick out the les paul. Got the tele and start right twice. Definetly tough some times to hear the difference in the tele and strat. Especially on iPhone speakers lol.
im jumping on an old video having just discovered your amazing channel. i have no musical talent and cant play any instruments at all but thinking of picking up a guitar. im so proud to get 4/5 correct! i didnt think i had an ear for music at all (damn you message in a bottle). i also want a Les Paul i think :P
I liked all of them differently and they shined differently with each song. Thank you for the video it was informative and funny. Put it in a bass case lol.....
Got the Strat and Tele mixed up every time, but the Les Paul for sure stood out. For me it'll always prefer the Strat over the Tele simply for playability; when I compared the Mexican Strat to the Mexican Tele a year ago in my local guitar store, the Strat felt easier to play for longer periods of time, and I could access more of the higher frets, too. To me ear, they sounded pretty similar also, so it made sense to have the versatility of three pickups.
The fact that you wouldn't use positions two and four on the strat because it wouldn't be a fair comparison..lol. That's exactly why I play Strats!! They are by far the most versatile in existence. Especially an HSS one with coil split.
Great vid. Got the first four examples right, the fifth is messing with me atm, maybe I need some rest after all that hard work, will come back to it later!
I'll take me a Strat anyday (out of the three) -It is the Swiss Army Knife of guitars. I have a Pro-Shop American that I have been playing for a couple decades now. I own two tele's and have played a lot of Pauls... I opted for a 335 in the Gibson dept. As this series goes on you'll note Mr. David sticks more to his Fender(ish) products unless a specific tone is required. Nothing agains Les Pauls... I personally find Fenders a just a bit more versatile...
It was sooooooo interesting!!! P....Please create such comparing video as this one! :) I'm sorry for my clumsy English. I'm Japanese. I subscribed your channel !!
Firstly hi and thanks for all the amazing videos you share with us. I've learnt a looot of things from you and I think I will be learning :) I just want one special thing that you might also enjoy doing cause you are also a Coldplay fan :) please man can you do a tutorial for shiver (acoustic part) :) Please ! :)
First I started to learn acoustic guitar. Now I have made the switch to electric guitar and play much rock like Guns N Roses and Queen. I want to get used to play solo's on that. But I also sometimes play things like "Thinking Out Loud". Which guitar is the best to buy? I now play the SG.
Even my LP is a copy but I still can tell which one is LP, but Strat and Tele are kinda hard, i just score 1 from 5 examples, maybe because I didn't have them yet
You seem to have a very fulfilling relationship with your guitars..
I could always tell the Les Paul, but the Strat vs Tele is always hard because the sound quite similar.
Michele Giuseppe Iurlo Yeah, I agree. I hear my SG a lot in the tones of the Les Paul...but I prefer both the Tele and the Strat.
Same here
Same here... i could pick out the les paul... but just guessing between the tele and strat.
Michele Giuseppe Iurlo I got every single one right.
i generally prefer the Strat and the Tele's clear tone over the muffy tone of the LP
I have been watching a ton of guitar comparison vids and a whole load other. This video is the best of them all.

waited for this video 3 months.

I mixed up strat and tele.

Love the Satriani intro. What a great song!
I thought I wanted the guitars, then I saw the keyboard.
me too I wanted to play guitar then I saw the gaming keyboard.
You played beautifully all the instruments, bless you. For my years Les Paul sounded great.
I always preferred teles over the other two, but tbh I love them all

Been a strat guy for more than 20 years, once tried lp with p90's, things changed
Such an interesting demo. I could definitely differentiate the LP on the clean songs, and often the fenders. The higher the gain got, the more difficult it became. black dog riff stumped me, and I mixed up the fenders on message in a bottle.
Great video as always! Next video should be about how you style your hair, cause that is seriously one amazing hairstyle.
Great vid, I love all three but after 50 years of playing mostly Les Pauls I am now playing primarily Tele's.
That tapping part sounded best on the tele imo. I just love something about it, idk what though.
Yes!!! The Satch opener!
Your awesome...wish there were more people in the world like you...

My fixed my bridge too. All the floating bridge does is make it a pain the use different tunings.
This was a fantastic comparison. But what is really interesting is that, if you are familiar with the song you could then understand the tone order.

My God you are a very proficient guitarist.
Prices of decent Gibsons are just about to go up. I'd still go for your Tele anyday, sounds awesome.
First of all, I'm not a guitarist, but I prefer the Stratocaster, because that's what was used by my favourite artist of all time, Buddy Holly.
This was helpful to me as I am getting ready to purchase one of the three. I used to like the LP, but now I'm not so sure. Thx for the demo!

Everyone says that the Tele and Strat sound alike, but in every example I could always tell the Tele and had trouble between Strat and LP
I don't like wars but I LOVE the STRAT!!! 😻
To me, the Strat, like the SG, are pure rock guitars. The Tele is a jack of all trades.

Big Tele fan here! 😁
If Paul had gone for the iconic sounds of each guitar. Like the Strat in 2nd pickup position and Tele in bridge it’d be easier to tell.
Hey man, those avalon fret markers that your strat has, are they original (do they come with that strat model) or did you buy them separetly??????
Fabulous Paul Sir!
What about HSH and HSS strat? There are also other pickup settings for tele.
That's one wicked keyboard
Yeah, it is man!
what was the pickup position used , neck or bridge? thanks Paul 👍
In my opinion the Les Paul sounds best... so dark and sweet with a lot sustain... love it 😗
To me, the Strat sounds more like a Telly and vice versa. The Strat is a little more bity, what I relate more to a Telly.
Great new trend those blind tests
Paul, can you tell me the model name of your les paul from this video
in JAN 1965 Leo sold company to CBS... not 1969!!!!
Played teles for 30 years. Not a huge Les Paul fan. If I got one it would be one with P-90s.
Hi Mr Paul !
Please tell me the exact model of your Tele ..
I am gonna get one 😊
I never guessed right. And my favourite kept changing…. Oh well, buy all 3😅
Excellent video! Didn't get many right, but learned a bunch of good jokes!
Les paul was pretty recognizable but I struggled to tell the difference between the strart and the tele.
Thanks

tele but i own a gnl asat classic... what do you think? do they sound almost the same?
