I dont even think Ben Howard knows how he has lyrically touched my soul in every single song he has wrote. Feel blessed to listen to this beautiful music
The entire album is so closely connected with water, I'm talking about how every note of his guitar just flows and merges with the other in fluid-like perfection, and this song is... well, amazing, but also my favourite. Congratulation, Ben. Even better than Every Kingdom at times, didn't think it was possible.
In other words, lots of reverb and delay ;) I agree that it's better than Every Kingdom and I love that it's so different. His voice suits a full band and electric guitars just as well as it does a single acoustic guitar!
He is such a perfectionist, he ran through the intro of this song probably 4 times recently at a concert in Nashville. He was making adjustments, until he was satisfied. I really appreciate that, his music oozes passion, maybe borderline obsession. My only complaint is that he has ruined sub par music for me haha
I get shivers down my spine when he sings "with all of the sounds that you make" and you can see the emotion in his face and hear it in his voice. Every single time.
I get shivers at 3:43, the rawness of his voice when he sings "told me life was learning how to be your friend". The rendition of this song is so perfect!
WOW. I'm blown away. Doing homework while listening to Ben Howard is extremely difficult because I just want to focus on the music and his lovely voice 4 years later and this still slaps lol
fuck the homework..when Ben is on the menu i just stand still whatever i am doing..and i am old enought to say that....it is dangerous music i tell you :) standing still like some kind of hymn is on or something
You can see from his face and some of the natural elements in his vocals that this isn't just reciting and playing a song. This is cutting out your beating heart and placing it on the stage. This guy has some balls to open his emotions to the world like this
Really miss this era of Ben specifically. I know artists change and evolve, but this album had a huge impact on my life. Saw him live 3-4 times around this album, and it was brilliant.
Facts. Saw him in Denver this year on the “Is It?” Tour and was so disappointed. I knew he would only play maybe a handful of older songs - he did manage to squeeze Old Pine in there - but he didn’t include anything from IFWWW. I had low expectations going in, but he is really night and day from his earlier work (Every Kingdom/IFWWW) to now. Not that his music is bad right now, but it’s not something I’m going to spend money to watch and listen to. Very sad. I know artists evolve, but brother, recognize where your fans are - we want the old Ben. Maybe he doesn’t want to be that guy, who knows. Strange performance either way, maybe the most awkward show I’ve been to. Place was packed but barely anyone knew the words to any of his new stuff. And he barely said anything to the crowd - extremely quiet and reserved. Just odd all around. He is playing a commemorative IFWWW tour but only in Europe right now 😒
@@nickargo4426 yeah sounds similar to my experience. I saw the same tour in DC - played maybe 2 or 3 max of his old songs, but mostly his new stuff, which just isn’t my vibe sadly. I would say the general mood of the crowd after the DC show was confused/annoyed/disappointed. I totally support an artist exploring whatever interests them… but I do think in a concert setting, playing some of your biggest hits is a courteous thing to do for the fans. People are giving up time and money to see an artist live, and I think it’s reasonable to at least play some of your biggest songs. It would be weird if you went to see the Stones live for example and they only played Start Me Up and Satisfaction and then 20 deep cuts… All that said.. when I saw Ben 3-4 times live around the time of his second album, including once in NYC with Daughter as his opener, it felt like he was struggling mentally. In fact during one of his shows also in DC, it seemed like he was pretty drunk by the end of his set and he didn’t even finish one of his encore songs before walking off stage. I suspect, although I don’t know for certain, that his second album was a darker moment in his life… that would at least fit the lyrics and vibe of the record.. so if he is happier and healthier now, then I’m happy for him.. and if revisiting that music and moment in his life is difficult for him, then I support his decision to move on, even if I’m bummed not to hear that music live anymore.
best guitarist at the moment, just the way he uses it, he has his own unique style, isn't afraid to try something new. He can make the guitar do things some guitarists don't even think/dream about.
sam hepworth not necessarily, I mean he's one of my favorites but Damien Rice was doing similar things back in the. Check out his video of "I Remember (The End)" which was done live at the four sessions. Probably one of the best live musical performances I've ever seen. Ben Howard is definitely influenced by him.
There isn't an album I've connected with more than I Forget Where We Were. Each song is FUCKING MAGIC to my ears. Every single time I listen to it I am brought back to the first time I heard it and filled with memories and emotions. These emotions feed me when I am feeling empty; It's amazing that music can do that. I will always love Ben Howard. He is one incredible musician that sings with every inch of his soul.
Its incredible how much emotion he puts into this song, I'm having a tough time at the moment and some of the lyrics really hit home.. Had me in tears by the end, really beautiful song
has had the same effect on me at times....I have often wondered if he struggles with depression sometimes....because of some of his lyrics....just a hunch.....but I agree with you...
This guy really is for the music not the fame when I went to see him live in manhattan October 12 he played all of noonday dream album ppl didn’t appreciate it. He gave zero fucks! Also when he left the stage he just waved and left again just about music
For me, this song is about depression and the extent it has on a person who takes an active part in someones life who is diagnosed with depression. I can so relate to this song it's almost crazy. therefore my favourite on his superb album "I forget where we were"
i love how you can still hear his guitar style crystal clear even with his use of the electric guitar its such a subtle change but creates such perfect harmony THIS ALBUM IS PERFECT AND SO ARE YOU BEN HOWARD
I love how the setting is all done in blue...Blue like the color of the sky the color of the ocean so deep beautiful full of mystery and secrets and then that golden light behind him because Ben is the Sun

Mr howard. thanking you for all your incredible videos and music. every time I listen/watch you you blow me away and when I came to Birmingham to see you live last year. Was sad when the concert ended. but wow can't thank you enough.
It was my dream for like 4-5 years and I bunked off work to try and meet him using my contacts at Radio 1, it worked and to this day, it still gives me butterflies thinking about it. I have met hundreds of people, like mega pop stars, but Ben means a lot more. There's something really special about his music.
It’s been almost three months since I’ve been stuck at home because of lockdown, and I can assure that this amazing song and this particular performance have been keeping me alive. The rhythm of this masterpiece, the gentle sequence of the chords and sounds, and the deep lyrics have teleported me to different dimensions without even moving. Thanks, Ben Howard, for giving us this piece of art to hold on to during these hard times. You’re the best artist I’ve discovered this year by far.
Hold it in, the river in your mouth is pouring out Water takes the shape of all that it surrounds Yeah I know, I've been trying so hard To keep in time with all of the hours in your day Hold it in, they wouldn't let you out among the crowd Not like that these streets will tear you down How it is, under my skin Now you are, pictures of all you'll ever be Oh I am not myself, today I am not feeling, okay Hold it in, the river in your mouth is pouring out Water takes the shape of all that it's around Yeah I know, I been trying so hard To keep in time, with all of the sounds that you make Hold it in they come at you from both sides of your mind Thick and thin; these walls you'll always stand behind I'm sick and tired, oh I beg for the world to change But it don't, no it ain't on you and that's the thing Oh I am not myself, today I am not feeling, okay And you, showed me hope amidst the harlequins in spring And you, told me life was learning how to be your friend
This is so brilliant. One of my favourite songs anyway but I come back to this performance all the time and watching him play so flawlessly through the harmonic notes along with normal notes at such speed through the song is unreal. Awesome.
I dont even think Ben Howard knows how he has lyrically touched my soul in every single song he has wrote. Feel blessed to listen to this beautiful music
Thank you for putting into words the exact feelings I have about him and his songs! Couldnt agree more!

I agree..!!! He is so SO AMAZING
its because he is/was a surfer and spent a lot of time in and around water
coolguytrevor I know that. he's still a surfer. he even does charity work for 'surfers against sewage' :)

Amen to that! I just tried and got lost in this
I am trying to program while listening. I am currently failing in my development project. hah who cares.
Omg I know right! I'm 4 days away from oct nov exams and here I am falling in love with his voice.
You can see from his face and some of the natural elements in his vocals that this isn't just reciting and playing a song. This is cutting out your beating heart and placing it on the stage. This guy has some balls to open his emotions to the world like this
YES!
this is what makes quality music
Couldn't Explain it better Myself
Well said mate
That's why he got hurt and had to stop

My stomach hurts listening to this. It's so beautiful and my belly is full of butterflies. Perfect.
Rhiannon Thomas god I feel the same way I feel like my stomach is caving in and I can't breathe how the hell does Ben howard do this
As a musician, this man is inspiring as hell.
Hell yeah

But your music helped as always..much better now :)

Not to take away from how great Ben Howard is, but are you familiar with Tash Sultana?
ruclips.net/video/GVDJ8O3lPBA/видео.html
Nah i dont' think that's true, there are better guitarists out there. That one guy from that band Muse for example lmao
David gilmour still alive lol
And you, showed me hope amidst the harlequins in spring
and you, told me life was learning how to be your friend
♥
+a aaa strikes me as someone who has succumbed to suicidal thoughts but telling everyone around them that life was fine and they were feeling better
For me this is definitely the best song off the album, it really seems to portray where I am right now. Very emotional.
Great election! That's my favorite song to!

This song has become one of my favorites, Ben Howard is opening my soul.
Same as can't stop playing omg in love

India Bourne. Has there aver been a girl more mind-blowing, talented, and beautiful. I'm seriously in love with this girl
Ben, how can you always perform so darn perfect? Wait, I know why......Its because you are perfection :)
couldn't have put it better.
Except at 4:59 :(
MM Harmon Mmmmm.......Still perfect :)
MM Harmon it was intentional!
I think the live version is much better. That's how you know you've made it as an artist wow
I’m afraid he might be lip syncing here, at 1:07-1:11. I’m just not sure how he could be singing that part where he wets his lips..but maybe? 🤔
Ben is unique. No one can emulate that sound. He is one of a freaking kind!! I listen to him and something strange happens to me. LOVE HIM!
*Lyrics*
Hold it in love
The river in your mouth is pouring out
Water takes the
Shape of all that it surrounds
Yeah I know
I've been trying so hard to keep in time
With all of the hours in your day
Hold it in babe
Who let you out among the crowd?
Not like that
These streets will tear you down
How it is
Under my skin, now you are
Pictures of all you’ll ever be
Oh I am not myself
Today
I am not feeling
Okay
Hold it in love
The river in your mouth is pouring out
Water takes the
Shape of all that it’s around
Yeah I know
I been trying so hard to keep in time
With all of the sounds that you make
Hold it in babe
Come at you from both sides of your mind
Thick and thin these
Walls you’ll always stand behind
Are sick and tired
Oh I beg for the world to change
But it don’t
No it ain't all you and that’s the thing
Oh I am not myself
Today
I am not feeling
Okay
And you
Showed me hope amidst the harlequins in spring
And you
Told me life was learning how to be your friend
@@MloodyPL i swear he isn't even human
Wouldn't let you out amongst the crowd*
Every song, perfomance, the way he even plays the guitar , his hair...man I love him.
This song every time brings tears and gives me goosebumps
That progression at 4:00 is pure genius
I totally agree
+Ryan McCrossan have you heard the peformance at the Greek Theater of this song? Its insane
It's a high bar. But this is my favourite Ben Howard song.
Wow. I NEVER get old of this whole set. It makes me tingle. Wish I could witness this small gig live

Pretty crazy how the subtle addition of a tambourine lifts the outro to another level.

Still rocking this masterpiece in 2024❤
Love this live version. Wish I could buy this one.
Money can't buy this kind of astonishing music
Ben Howard is just FUCKING UNREAL!!!! Maaaaaate!!! 🙏🏻
Simply beautiful 🙏
I've lost count the number of times I've listened to this song, when it hits 3:56, just brilliant.
Wonderful Performance. Kind of tension in the air, but a massive built up - a master of dynamics at work.
Silence is golden for real.
❤❤❤ Questa canzone mi fa impazzire!!!!! Fantastica questa versione live!!!!!
You have the voice of an angel, Ben Howard. Good stuff, as per usual.
How can something be so delicate and subtle yet so brilliantly cathartic? It's magic indeed.
True that
I heard him sing that album and was hooked. Rivers is a dynamic piece of work!
I can't not watch it!!! Its so perfect!!!! Mind blowing!!!!! Good job Ben!

When he says “I beg for the world to change, but it don’t” if everyone in the room didn’t feel that, they aren’t human.
They come at you from both sides of your mind, thick and thin......... these walls you'll always stand behind
I want to see Ben Howard and Half Moon Run do a song together because it would be a key point in music history
why would that be the case?
Both have very unique and powerful music i could see it being a very closely designed and well manufactured track

Ben Howard has to be my all time favourite solo artist. I've never known someone to sing with such emotion.
One of the best,if not,the best of our generation.amazing stuff Mr.Howard :)
