After 10 years that this album has been released, today I'm listening to 21, the album by Adele for the very first time!

Rolling in the Deep
This song is about a love that has ended and that really hurt the speaker. She's still reminded of that love all the time, it is still very present in her life.
Adele sings “We almost had it all”, indicating that maybe a small thing culminated into causing the end of the relationship.
The play of words that I liked the most:
You had my heart inside your hand / And you played it to be beat
You had my heart inside your hand / And you played it with a beating.
So this person player with her heart with a beating - Adele felt like she was being beat on by all this suffering.
Rumor Has It
This track tells a story about this boy that is with another girl, and the speaker claims that she is not the right one for him. Adele presents many arguments of why they should not be together. But as the song progresses, there is a switch-up in the narrative. She sings “You made a fool out of me, boy”. So while that girls is making a fool out of the boy, he is making a fool out of Adele. She really wants to be with him, but he is continuing his relationship with that other girl.
Another switch up in the story happens when Adele sings “Rumor has is I’m the one you’re leaving her for”. This guys is going to break up his relationship to be with Adele.
But then, at the very end of the song, we have yet one final switch up! Adele sings “Rumor has it he’s the one I’m leaving you for”. Here the big question is who is this ‘you’ figure. Does she mean she is going to leave this guy he has been addressing this entire song, that has been playing with her heart, for another guy? Maybe for someone that will treat her better, with more respect.
Turning Tables
Her vocals shined so much and this track. The instrumentals they sounded classic and dramatic.
Lyrically, she had some precious lines! One of the most intriguing ones to me was “Under your thumb, but I can't breathe”
Another standout to me was “I won’t rescue you just to desert me”. To me, that lines means: You cannot be my top priority. I need to be my own priority in my life.
But the line that really breaks you is in the bridge: “Next time, I’ll be braver. Next time, I’ll be my own savior. Standing on my own two feet”. While these lines sound optimistic, they are also heartbreaking because it’s clear that was not the case this time. At this time, she did not feel that she was enough, but she’s hopeful that that can change in the future.
Don’t You Remember
This song was probably my favorite of the entire album. It really felt like the entire package: the production, lyrics, melodies, vocals. It all came together so beautifully. She sings with so much emotion.
The song starts with “When will I see you again? / You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said”.
It’s about not wanting the other person to forget you. “Don’t you remember the reason you loved me before? / Baby please remember me once more”.
The idea of this person getting over the relationship and never even thinking about her again is something she cannot stand, because the relationship was very meaningful to her. She wants it to have been meaningful to the other person as well.
Set Fire to the Rain
This is another one of those tracks that although I had definitely heard it many times, I had never really paid much attention to the lyrics. The storyline seemst o be finding that the person you're with is not really who they seem to be.
“But there's a side to you / That I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say / They were never true, never true
And the games you'd play // You would always win, always win”
Diving into this album has made me appreciate Adele’s songwriting so much! The first verse of ‘Set Fire to the Rain’ has so much imagery revolving around our body:
“I let it fall, my heart
And as it fell, you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me
My hands, they were strong
But my knees were far too weak
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet”
Another songwriting jewel is the title of this song. Set fire to the rain it’s such a cool imagery. It gives me the idea of breaking the laws of nature. Something that is so strong it could even set fire to the rain.

I think it is hard to say which of her songs is her biggest but the biggest three are definitely: 'Rolling In The Deep', 'Someone Like You' and 'Hello' and I hope soon Easy On Me

Yes she had so much to let go, this album sounds like a vital amputation so she could keep standing even with one foot and stepping forward eventually. It also seems to me that she needed other people to hear it, to help her carry this painful bargain. And not only we heard it loud and clear, but we felt it so vividly. Not as if it seemed we experienced her own pain, but because we experienced it in our very own lives too. I am pretty sure she realized it at one point and it must have hit her and helped her to heal. Yes we know these 48 minutes, because we almost all have this 48-minutes letter written in our own mind we wish we could have sent to this one and only we lost. I myself wrote the letter but never sent it and still hold the weight of it until now. I'm still trying to let it go, 10 years after! Thanks to you for sharing how her music and lyrics hit you too, that was truly contageous and full of emotions. Maybe you have been told this a million time already but you tremendously remind me of Brit Marling ❤️, not only physically (which is SO MUCH the case btw) but the way you smile and speak, the empathy you seem to carry, the synestethic way you connect to emotions as well, it's kind of confusing haha. Thumbs up again for the video 👍🏼

Rolling In The Deep (RIND) is with Hello her biggest song. RIND is also her best selling song in the US (8x platinum) while Hello is certified 7x platinum. Hello has more number 1 spots worldwide but mostly due to her comeback while RIND was way much longer charting than Hello and her first international hit. Based on international sales both songs are literally close to each other.
Lovesong is not her song but a song of a band called The Cure. She did a cover of it ❤️
