Man, I do miss the music of the time.

Man! Love this era of fusion music. Andy can remind me ( at times) of Holdsworth, Fripp, Gambale and others in tones and chords.
But at the end of the day, this is Andy Summers. He has his own unique style and “ phrasing “ on guitar. A classic guitar giant!

I've enjoyed listening to Andy Summers ever since the Police's first album. Now that we see his jazz fusion side in the video above, I'm convinced he's every bit as good as Alan Holdsworth. In fact, I'd say better without all of the weird spaced out scales that Alan is known for. Andy is one of my favorite guitarists. I've been playing guitar since 1975. I love his use of chorus. Andy plays chords I've never seen before. totally mindblowing.

I bought this album way back in 1990. Doug Lunn played bass on the album, fretless. Andy always reminded me of John Goodsall. Check out the band Fire Merchants from the 1990s. John Goodsall, Doug Lunn & Toss Panos on drums (& Chester Thompson).

you ought to read his autobiography, he started out wanting to learn jazz, and experimented, playing every possible chord with alternate root notes in part of his quest for musical knowledge. a fascinating life.

love that outside of the The Police, each member has a successful solo career. Stewart Copeland as a film scorer aswell as a number of solo projects, Andy Summers w/ his own jazz/fusion project and Sting on his solo career. All 3 of them are very talented.

That's the thing though. Due to their musical education, each guy could have gone in any musical direction prior to the Police. Not many famous pop bands have that kind of musicianship.

First time I see Andy Summers play an exotic Klein guitar. I always saw him as a very orthodox guy in terms of guitar format to use. As for the sound..very clean execution with his typical chorus tremolos and ninth sixth chords as he uses in The Police. Genius

Andy has been very unorthodox in his career. His telecaster was highly modified. He was a pioneer with effects and sounding like no other guitarist in the 70ies and 80ies. He was also an original user of the guitar synth.

The concert wasn’t recorded in Europe, but in Montréal, Canada. And the keyboard player, Mitchel Forman, is not shown much either, apart from when he‘s soloing. So I don‘t think it‘s an issue of race. Have you watched the video until the song "Blues for Snake" at 44:55, where Darryl Jones is featured extensively?

Don’t shoot me. I grew up on the Police. I always thought Andy was an interesting guitarist. Maybe I didn’t pursue his work after the Police out of apathy. Frankly, I never got the hype around him. Shame on me. He may not shred like Holdsworth or others playing music of a similar vein but to me just shredding is boring AF anyway. To the point, decades later I finally see he’s a true maestro. His playing is so authentic and he’s one of “those” that plays his way, a style he pioneered. Wow. I’m really late to the party. PS Chad only plays with legends.
