Software Dev here: yeah we’ve known about AI’s tendency to be bigoted for a while actually. It’s only just now reaching mainstream areas but it learns what it’s taught and regurgitates it without discretion. I learned in a data science class that there was an AI that automatically sorted out any female sounding resumes from a job application because the “high performers” in that industry were mostly male, and a public chatbot that starting saying horrendous stuff because that’s how people talked to it. AI is like a very articulate toddler that absorbs everything and has no understanding of the deeper meaning of it. And now the world has allowed these toddlers to run a lot of things. Granted, there is a way to reduce this by being VERY careful about what the AI is taught during training and establishing certain banned words and phrases from its dictionary, but this slows the process down and is expensive, so AI bots like the one Fable uses are probably using less sophisticated training data.

“If you can’t put in the money for somebody else’s art why should i put in the money for your art?” 👏👏👏👏 Cause I’m so sick of ai EVERYWHERE Ugh I’ve only ever used storygraph and fable but spotify and fable disappointed me so much this year
I add books to Storygraph all the time! It’s probably better now, but I totally understand why you use GR instead. This ish about Fable is wild. I’m forever glad we didn’t like it when we tried it out for our book club!
as an artist, it hurts so much that people-even other creatives like authors and established designers-use generative AI. kindle is RIDDLED with AI-generated covers and it's like...art and artists already have a hard time paying bills and keeping food on the table and now we're getting actively replaced and our art stolen. it's not legal to use AI-generated art to sell but how do you explain it to people who aren't artists like legal courts and politicians? it's killing the environment, it's killing the creative field, AND it's coded by pro-nft/crypto, maga, smoothbrain, musk-d!ckr!der bigots! like why would you use something from someone like that if you have any sense of a moral compass? with regards to AI, i will say that fable's apology is a lot more genuine and they removed the AI features quickly so i appreciate that. i hope they make it right with the black community because a human being would have NEVER made these horrific comments.
i used to draw a lot in high school so i’m aware of how much work and effort go into art. i don’t draw anymore but i still support artist, that’s why authors using ai upsets me sooo much because authors experience the exact same thing as artists (taking a while to learn the craft, having a hard time paying bill) and even the struggles of getting readers and maybe even publishers, it’s frustrating because ai could be stealing from their work and being used to push out books but they don’t consider that. it’s sooo lazy and selfish to me
thats insane. like why wouldn't you at the VERY LEAST have a person to check the ai before it goes out to the users like are you guys ok...? but great video as usual
Fable made an apology video on TikTok. In the video, they mentioned plans to add more safeguards to reduce bias and to give more power to users regarding their responses to the AI and if they want to opt in or out.
There was one that was like oh you read a lot of banned books makes me wonder if you should be on a WATCH LIST. Are you joking me? Racist AI is disappointing but not even surprising anymore.
Thank you for this video. Hitting companies in the wallet and voicing your concerns like you’re doing are the best ways to fight against lazy crap like AI. I read for fun, but also because I enjoy seeing what comes out of other humans’ heads, flaws and all. So this massive push by companies who really couldn’t care leas about things of actual substance is frustrating.
It's always important to remember that big tech isn't sinking billions of dollars into AI to make writing your book, composing music, or drawing a masterpiece easier, it's a tool whoes purpose is to allow wealthy access to skill while removing the ability to access wealth from the skilled. I will say, you advocate for companies like Fable to ditch AI even though they may lose features and it will be more costly, yet you are unwilling to switch from Goodreads (a notoriously toxic app, owned by Amazon) because... you'd lose your stats on a couple books? You know you've read the books, why are those stats so important.
i think it’s very clear i acknowledge that goodreads isn’t good and i not only promote sites that are better but spreadsheets as well. i also don’t tell people to stop using fable in the video either. i pretty obviously acknowledge that’s it’s hypocritical of me to talk about what apps are bad while using ai. i didn’t know that implying it wasn’t enough and that id actually have to say that
yeah i never used anything to track my reading so when i started on goodreads i hated it. then i switched to storygraph and loved it so ive kept that but bc everyone was talking about fable & starting book clubs i wanted to try it but HATE it !!!! im just gonna stick to storygraph
Finally someone who shares my opinion about the ai, it makes me so mad and you know what's wild is my friends and family are using it for their assignments. Even though it lies, it lies, I swear I'm so done... I'm just thinking of people writing their university papers with ai and it makes me feel sick, and so sorry for the teachers having to mark ai slop. I'd rather turn in an unfinished assigment than ai :/
Honestly I tentatively respect Fable for their response to this because the announcement of removing the AI features was filled with hundreds of comments from people complaining about the decision, and an unfortunate proportion of them stuck to their guns even after the reasoning was explained to them...
I like fable. It has the most simple graphs without overwhelming me. I still uses Goodreads. I wasn't shocked, their model of AI is supposed to roast you and they didn't take in account, there are many genres you can not roast. If they do decide to bring back that feature but written by real people, they still need to go the positive route for summaries. Stats wise, an algorithm can handle that. They did get rid of their AI, shall see what they do in the future
yeah so many people have commented that, my main issue is that i’ve read over 1500 books and they accurately weren’t transferred over, i don’t know what’s missing but a lot of my books aren’t there
I’ve been using Fable since last week and kind of liked it at first sight. It’s cute and all, but still very inconsistent, and way too SM oriented, which is distracting, so I’m seriously considering deleting it already (and now with all this controversy… it seems like an even easier decision) Being brutally honest, I tried the Storygraph, but just couldn’t get used to it. I found it too confusing and too much information gives me anxiety. Besides, I really don’t need all those graphs. The reviews there are tiresome to write and to read as well. So, I deleted it a couple of months ago. As you can see, I’ve been trying, but just can’t leave Goodreads behind. It has its problems (that we all know…), but it gets the job done and still has the best database out there. 🤷🏻♀️ I use it, mainly, to track my books, specially, my TBR, and to get recommendations from the selected group of people that I follow. So, I’ll keep using it, alongside a private app that I use for my data and additional stats. I also use it as a Reading Journal, since I can add notes and my fav quotes.
I am a high school English teacher so I see the effects of AI on our future generation. They love some Snapchat AI and it gives them the worst answers. I will clown them every time because if you are going to cheat at least pick a better service. My problem with AI whether it’s images or written is that it inherently favors the current majority. The current majority of most media is filled with White Supremacy and stereotyping. People can’t recognize it immediately because they are saturated with it. I got McBling for the months my artists were a mix of R&B and Hip-Hop on my Spotify wrapped and my first reaction was, “why was this racist terminology used?” (Cause honestly what the heck is McBling??) So I’m not surprised Fable had this issue. If they want to be #1 for AI reading app tracking then all users need to know that this means potential interactions with racism, stereotyping, homophobia, transphobia, and bigotry. AI is the norm of what’s being pushed in the news and top articles and if users don’t know or understand that they could potentially be exposing themselves to the darker sides of the Internet without realizing that’s what they signed up for. I hate that this is the case, but more and more people are going to be exposed to racism and bigotry, misogyny, or ableism because there is already a shift in the way media and social media is allowing words and forms of hate speech to no longer be seen as derogatory.
what the ACTUAL fuck was that ai year-in-review thing???? like. I know that's the point of this video, but holy SHIT when I heard that I actually had to stop what I was doing for a sec. Huge kudos to you for pointing this out and for speaking out against AI in the creative fields in general - that's always so wonderful and affirming to see!!
Yeah I knew something was wrong with my Spotify wrapped because my other top artists and songs made sence but with my #1 top artist I got sza not that shes not a good artist but she was far from my top one i didint listen to her songs that much last year.
There was also described genre-hopping as ‘betraying a severe case of literary ADHD’. While definitely not as overtly disgusting as some of these about race, it shows a disturbing trend of AI absorbing our using complex disorders/disabilities as synonyms for benign things. Which wouldn’t be so bad if those ideas then didn’t feed the narrative that ‘everyone has it, stop complaining.’
I enjoy fable for the Blog type style it has. I dont have a lot of irl reader friends, so it's nice that it's an app that you can interact with a bunch of book lovers on. Kinda feels like a less advanced Tumblr that's strictly for readers. Other than that, for tracking, I stick to goodreads and storygraph. The AI situation with the fable book wrapped was insane to see. I'm glad that the founder was proactive in getting it fixed and responding to those who voiced their frustration. I just hope its a stepping stone for app developers to finally realize that their consumers do not care for all of that. Simple is usually better.
Ngl, I use AI to edit my work but I also look over the edits and make changes myself afterward. I dont let AI write my stories at all nor will I ever use it for that or use art from it. To me, AI is a tool that is being misused and abused by people who are lazy and dont want to put in more effort. Lastly, I miss the reader summaries on fable, I have a dark sense of humor so seeing the reader summaries in my stats roasting me would give me a good chuckle but the racism and the sexism was surprising and saddening to see. I wish there was an option where readers would opt in for the summaries or not instead of doing away with them, though.
Love this rant. I’m so sick of this nonsense. Who asked for this? Who wants this? Not including the cheap lazy 1% who know a cash grab when they see one. (Also, hey Murderbot, and UnCharles!)
I just downloaded Fable (without knowing about this incident because I don't have social media) to try it out and I can't get into it. People complain about goodreads like it murdered their family but it's not THAT bad. It does its job which is tracking books. Also as you said it has pretty much every book, and multiple editions, plus loads of reviews. Fable only has american editions which as someone who reads mostly uk editions it's annoying. I hate AI so much it's slithering it way into our lives everywhere as if we want it. I use Pinterest a lot to make boards for my worldbuilding and stories and it's a nightmare there.
What do you mean "hire some people?"... Never in the history of any platform providing stats for their users were those stats hand-curated by a person. No one would be able to afford to use that platform. I work in IT and we use AI for stats all the time because AI can learn and identify patterns. Before AI the stats were very static where there were just the same database queries for everyone, so things like how many books, pages etc.. AI is much more flexible and is the reason we get more personalized stats nowadays. Don't get me wrong... the things that the Fable AI spit out were aweful and I really question their AI developement and what content they fed their AI for it to learn to discriminate like that. But if there is an area in the book (or music) space for AI, it's stats. AI is just not at the point yet were it is unfailable and doesn't make mistakes. It's still a very young technology. And I agree that AI in creative spaces can be very dangerous but AI in general is not the big bad Evil people make it out to be.
fully admit i don’t work in IT so i don’t know what the hell i was talking about, this was a random rant i made as soon as i woke up. i don’t think ai is evil but i also don’t think company’s should be lazy with it, im fully aware ai is here to stay and may get worse (i don’t believe it’ll make anything better, sorry)
From what I've read, Spotify Wrapped couldn't even include genres last year because they laid off the guy that did a lot of the work categorizing and coding around genre classification ("data alchemist" Glenn McDonald). This was part of a huge wave of lay-offs that quite obviously impacted the quality of 2024 wrapped. So people in the past obviously weren't hand-curating every single user's data but there is definitely a visible difference between having more people working on these projects vs less/no people. This is just the one example I know of, but I definitely think hiring people can make a difference
Oh gosh, the fact that even AI displays racism through out it’s app truly does go to show racism is so prevalent through everything that we face in life! This is shitty ):
YES to all this, plus AI is also adversely effecting disabled writers like me. Everyone from published authors to college students with autism, ADHD, or other neurodivergence is being accused of using AI even when they haven't. Just cause we tend to choose different words and punctuation patterns. Not to mention how awful AI is for the environment!
You should really read Algorithms of Oppression by Safiya Noble! It discusses in depth exxactly about what you're talking about! It's really fascinating.
A TV show that deals with AI discourse in a really compelling way is a murder at the end of the world, it really is a whodunnit but with social commentary, highly recommend! When AI is portrayed negatively in media people are like omg that’s fiction and extreme but like it’s also very plausible and scary that that’s were we’re headed… also I tried to use fable but I just got bored, I’ll be deleting that app right now 🚮
This is a good video! I hate that AI is taking over so many apps and websites. I will not be using fable. I didn't use it much before, but knowing that not only they use AI but the AI is writing bigoted things, I am opting out. There are tons of book clubs virtually and in person outside of that app and in my opinion better apps for book collecting, etc
I’m not really against in all the use of AI, the one the use for the text is probably just a text generator. The thing is that I don’t think they have experts training the Ai, because in the end it’s just a program it’s being racist, sexist etc because they are feeding it text that are like that. And if there’s no human actually checking the text before they train the Ai with them that’s the big issue. Then again one could argue what’s the point on having those ai generated stats but well that’s a conversation on its own
this is super fucked up but i do have to mention they did remove all ai features from the app so at least there’s that. doesn’t forgive their actions still
I'm not surprised of AI being racist. Have you seen those apps that are like "how would you look if you were an anime", they never show black characters
On top of everything you said about AI, which is of course true and I also stand by that 100%, it also bothers me so much how unsustainable it is. It consumes a lot more energy than any other thing users can do with technology and how irresponsibly it is used... it really makes me mad. People waste that energy for fun and lazyness on a daily basis. I am against ChatGPT even existing. But the AI generated videos should be illegal. Or at least those involving human beings
What even is the point of an AI generated book wrap up? Why kust we use AI for even the most petty things thats so much fucking water and energy why???
I started using fable in november but found it soo difficult to use (compared to how easy goodreads is) and I immediately deleted it after this incident. I also hate AI so much, it makes me scared to continue posting videos/pictures on the internet when deepfakes are getting better. Not that anyone would do a deepfake of me lol but the possibility is scary.
AI is being racist is just par for the course at this point. That sorry sorry response from fable. 🙄 I’d love to hear you talk about the music you like. I’ve never heard of cigarettes after sex and I’m a fan now. I’m sure I’m in the minority though.
this is kinda the best comment ever because i was just ranting about spotify, i absolutely didn’t expect anyone to go and listen to the artist i mentioned 😭😭
ai is definitely racist, not only because it's trained on material that's racist! it's also because the logic behind the way it classifies things and tries to define and put people and images into categories to make them more easily to compute is very similar to the way colonisers made up their definitions of race 🙃 i learnt so much about this in the book Atlas of AI by Kate Crawford and i would very much recommend

“If you can’t put in the money for somebody else’s art why should i put in the money for your art?” 👏👏👏👏 Cause I’m so sick of ai EVERYWHERE Ugh I’ve only ever used storygraph and fable but spotify and fable disappointed me so much this year
Not shocked by this tbh because Ai learns from human input. If the human is biased, it will be biased.
yep, it’s trained on the models of humans that are inherently racist 😢
I add books to Storygraph all the time! It’s probably better now, but I totally understand why you use GR instead. This ish about Fable is wild. I’m forever glad we didn’t like it when we tried it out for our book club!
If possible, please please do the Ai and Authors video ,like a deep dive I need to know

as an artist, it hurts so much that people-even other creatives like authors and established designers-use generative AI. kindle is RIDDLED with AI-generated covers and it's like...art and artists already have a hard time paying bills and keeping food on the table and now we're getting actively replaced and our art stolen. it's not legal to use AI-generated art to sell but how do you explain it to people who aren't artists like legal courts and politicians? it's killing the environment, it's killing the creative field, AND it's coded by pro-nft/crypto, maga, smoothbrain, musk-d!ckr!der bigots! like why would you use something from someone like that if you have any sense of a moral compass? with regards to AI, i will say that fable's apology is a lot more genuine and they removed the AI features quickly so i appreciate that. i hope they make it right with the black community because a human being would have NEVER made these horrific comments.
i used to draw a lot in high school so i’m aware of how much work and effort go into art. i don’t draw anymore but i still support artist, that’s why authors using ai upsets me sooo much because authors experience the exact same thing as artists (taking a while to learn the craft, having a hard time paying bill) and even the struggles of getting readers and maybe even publishers, it’s frustrating because ai could be stealing from their work and being used to push out books but they don’t consider that. it’s sooo lazy and selfish to me
thats insane. like why wouldn't you at the VERY LEAST have a person to check the ai before it goes out to the users like are you guys ok...? but great video as usual
Dude, the Fable incident has been such a HOT FLAMING MESS. And the way they keep digging themselves into a deeper and deeper hole needs to be studied
haven’t kept up since their apology, haven’t done anything else?
Fable made an apology video on TikTok. In the video, they mentioned plans to add more safeguards to reduce bias and to give more power to users regarding their responses to the AI and if they want to opt in or out.
There was one that was like oh you read a lot of banned books makes me wonder if you should be on a WATCH LIST. Are you joking me?
Racist AI is disappointing but not even surprising anymore.
THIS IS CRAZY
Thank you for this video. Hitting companies in the wallet and voicing your concerns like you’re doing are the best ways to fight against lazy crap like AI. I read for fun, but also because I enjoy seeing what comes out of other humans’ heads, flaws and all. So this massive push by companies who really couldn’t care leas about things of actual substance is frustrating.
liked commented and subscribed because you are the funniest and realest person that i just discovered 15 minutes ago
😭🫶🏾
Sorry Fable is boring 😭I’m on it and the book clubs are lame to me.
I've added so many books on Storygraph that weren't there. You just have to do it manually as opposed to adding the ISBN.
yeah so many people have commented that, my main issue is that i’ve read over 1500 books and they accurately weren’t transferred over, i don’t know what’s missing but a lot of my books aren’t there
I’ve been using Fable since last week and kind of liked it at first sight.
I got McBling for the months my artists were a mix of R&B and Hip-Hop on my Spotify wrapped and my first reaction was, “why was this racist terminology used?” (Cause honestly what the heck is McBling??)
So I’m not surprised Fable had this issue.
Welp there goes my short lived life with fable. My summaries were fine but the fact this mess is happening irritates me. Good bye fable!
Goodreads is supreme, I'm never switching idgafffff
😭😭😭😭😭
Mine was just wrong, on the 4 season things it said some stuff that just wasnt in the books😅
100% with u!!!
Just want to say I love your cat. I have a black cat named Fortuna.
What’s a hot mess is an AI tool was the ad on this video, probably selected by a poorly programmed algo! UGH
Oh gosh, the fact that even AI displays racism through out it’s app truly does go to show racism is so prevalent through everything that we face in life! This is shitty ):
I was gonna get Fable, but this made me change my mind. Are there any good book tracking apps or are they all like this and Goodreads?
storygraph!
Come to Storygraph, babes!
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll give it a try!
@@myocoree Are you on there? I looked up your channel name and nothing came up.
@@hannahbrennan2131 no i don’t use storygraph, i only use goodreads
Then again one could argue what’s the point on having those ai generated stats but well that’s a conversation on its own
spotify wrapped definitely feels rigged… miss taylor swift can’t be EVERYONE’s top artist 🤨🤨
this is super fucked up but i do have to mention they did remove all ai features from the app so at least there’s that. doesn’t forgive their actions still
I'm not surprised of AI being racist.
❤❤❤
What even is the point of an AI generated book wrap up? Why kust we use AI for even the most petty things thats so much fucking water and energy why???
♥️♥️
I started using fable in november but found it soo difficult to use (compared to how easy goodreads is) and I immediately deleted it after this incident. I also hate AI so much, it makes me scared to continue posting videos/pictures on the internet when deepfakes are getting better. Not that anyone would do a deepfake of me lol but the possibility is scary.
i think your fear is valid!! people make deepfakes of literally anything
Omg stoppppppppp 😂 NOT THE MAKE ROOM FOR WHITE AUTHORS
🔥🔥🔥♥️♥️😍😍🙏🏾
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
AI is being racist is just par for the course at this point. That sorry sorry response from fable. 🙄
I’d love to hear you talk about the music you like. I’ve never heard of cigarettes after sex and I’m a fan now. I’m sure I’m in the minority though.
this is kinda the best comment ever because i was just ranting about spotify, i absolutely didn’t expect anyone to go and listen to the artist i mentioned 😭😭
AI learns from people and people, unfortunately, are horrible :')
This is disturbing.
Dang I have no life 😂 cause why as I open YT you post.
mind you, i was fixing the title when you commented this 😭🙏🏾 much appreciated though
‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Helloooo
I sometimes have to add my books myself on StoryGraph lmao
What the fuck that is so fucking weird
Diversity devotee?? Might as well call me a slur (sorry, live commenting while watching 😂)
Shame not a lot of people are talking about this. Commenting so the algorithm can push this up
None of that is racist. You are so determined to be offended it is boring.
ai is definitely racist, not only because it's trained on material that's racist! it's also because the logic behind the way it classifies things and tries to define and put people and images into categories to make them more easily to compute is very similar to the way colonisers made up their definitions of race 🙃 i learnt so much about this in the book Atlas of AI by Kate Crawford and i would very much recommend
not you promoting my spreadsheet 🥹 ilyyyyy. but no this ai shit is crazy
🤪🤪🤪
What’s a hot mess is an AI tool was the ad on this video, probably selected by a poorly programmed algo! UGH
