    How did you do the initiation stage? With plant tissue or seeds?

      I've done both over the years. Not sure which way I initialized for these specific cultures.

      Haha! Yes, TC is a great hobby and there was a time when I tried to TC everything too!! I'm getting back to doing that again, working with Cephalotus, Heliamphora, lots of species of Drosera, Dionaea, and Sarracenia. I've been solely focused on Dionaea for so many years it is fun to experiment with new techniques for initializing other plants in TC.

      Thanks!! Cephs are awesome! I have some babies growing right now that I was planning on raising until they put out their first adult pitchers, then repot them, let them settle in and put them up for sale. I am thinking it might be another couple of months, but it has been so long since I've raised Cephs from babies to adults, I can't say for sure! Almost certainly by next spring I'll have some ready for new homes.

    very interesting video. I am fascinated by the in vitro cultures.If I would have the space at home I would by a flow hood,too and do some experiments with plants. I work in a mol bio lab, so I use a professional hood for human cell culture everyday but of course I cant use it for my plants ;)
    I tried once to setup an in vitro culture but you need definately a hood, i got a lot of molds and the plants (some pieces of my sundews) didnt develop.

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  4 года назад

      Thank you! Yes, a flow hood makes it so much easier. But when I started doing TC, I had decent success with minimal contamination when I was working in an old sterilized aquarium. It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough to learn the process until I could afford to get a flow hood!

      You don’t need a Flo hood. I just initiated a ton of carnivorous plant seeds in a big plastic container in my bathroom. They sprouted and are growing. I’ll be ready to multiply soon in liquid media. I was unsuccessful with the plant tissue they all seem to leach stuff out onto the gel media. So I ran with the seeds.

    • @ervinlizforever7869
      @ervinlizforever7869 Год назад

      @@FlytrapStorehello quick question. I can’t seem to initiate plant tissue, only seeds. I tried a few times but still. I tried 20 mins in 20% bleach solution then alcohol 30 sec then sterilized water. The seeds got the same treatment. The plant tissue seems to be leaching out stuff some black stuff some white stuff which I suspect is alcohol. I rinsed really well.

      @MattMillerFlytrapStore Год назад +1

      @@ervinlizforever7869 20 minutes for sterilizing tissue seems far too long to me for pretty much any explant you might select. I'd say, depending on the explant type and size, start with anywhere between 6 and 8 minutes and go from there. If sterilization is not achieved, try getting the tissue cleaner before using the bleach, or try to go a minute or 90 seconds longer.

    Is it possible to grow two different plants in the same jar/medium flask?

      Sure, as long as they like the same type of media, hormones, etc., that are in the jar.

    Why are Cephalotuses so expensive if tissue culture can make tens of divisions?

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  4 года назад +2

      Because they are super small coming out of tissue culture and they do not root well when put in soil. Those that do survive (probably around 50%-60% for us) then grow SUPER slowly. They're simply slow-growing and non-vigorous plants, even though they grow quite well in tissue culture.

      @FlytrapStore  4 года назад +1

      @@thegambler808 Yes! But they still grow VERY SLOWLY. They respond well to both soil fertilizer and fertilizer in the pitchers, but the ones out of tissue culture are too small to feed via the pitchers.

    Hi, what do I do so that the cefas grow larger leaves in vitro under their culture temperature between 14 and 18 degrees. They will stop producing carnivorous leaves but non-carnivorous leaves will appear. And then to remove them ex vitro they will be much easier to manipulate because they will be triple or double in size.

    • @MattMillerFlytrapStore
      @MattMillerFlytrapStore 4 года назад

      Oh wow, that's interesting! So a cooler temperature around 14-18°C (57-65°F) induces them to form non-carnivorous leaves which makes them grow larger?

    Hi Matt!
    Don´t know if you get some contaminations but you can avoid it too by wearing gloves and was them with ethyl (70%) everytime you touch something out or that you are not sure if you touched.

    • @FlytrapStore
      @FlytrapStore  4 года назад +1

      Hello! Thanks for the tip!
      No, I almost never get contamination. I used to wear gloves all the time when I did tissue culture and would spray them down with 70% alcohol between doing each culture. It was cumbersome and the smell is horrible to deal with for multiple hours. So I stopped doing it and I am still contamination free!
