Golden Book Video Anime - The Boy Who Cried Wolf

- Here's something REALLY obscure I found. It's a Golden Book Video from 1986: "Aesop's Fables of Patience & Honesty." It's actually a Japanese anime that is hosted by three monkeys. It was simply titled "Aesop's Fables" and produced by Nippon Animation (the same Japanese studio that also did "Around the World with Willy Fog" and the "My Favorite Fairy Tales" anime.) I also have reason to believe that Golden Book Video actually dubbed this anime themselves, since I saw some of their usual crew members listed in the end credits.
Anyways, this story is of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." This familiar tale is retold with lively humor. Children will see how a young boy disrupts and entire community with his tricks. He pays the consequences of crying wolf too many times when a wolf finally does appear. Moral: NO ONE CAN BELIEVE A LIAR, EVEN WHEN HE IS TELLING THE TRUTH.
(C) 1983 Nippon Animation, dub (C) 1986 Western Publishing Company
I saw this MANY MANY MANY years ago. So happy to see it again!
This is making me Cry
The moral of this is “do not play mischievous games with people when given a serious responsibility. Do not scream for help, when you don't need it. Be honest, be straight up, and don’t screw people around, or they'll never forgive you for it, it’ll come back and bite you in the ass.” Also I think in the end the wolf ate the little boy, but they didn’t want to show it, because the gory scenes would be too violent and too scary for a young viewer.
The boy who cried wolf is about a kid who use to coming running to town always saying there was trouble "wolf" is just a term they use and people would rush to his aid all the time but there wasn't any trouble he just liked messing with them until one day something really did happen and when the boy when to go warn the town or call for help nobody paid him any mind because he would always joke . I think someone died or some big fire or something crazy . Point is if you keep asking for help only to tease people "crying wolf" one day you might really need help and no one will want to even listen or think your telling an other lie
Thanks for uploading this! I had this on VHS, along with the Wolf and Lamb episode. ♥️
I remember watching these as a kid!
Legend has it the wolf is still chasing the boy to this day
The wolf ate him
some people have good reasons for telling lies, like practice, after all you know what they say "practice makes perfect"
Never cry for help unless you really need help. That's the lesson this story teaches us.
It also works as an allegory for cancel culture.
ya so True!
Hep you definitely for cancer
Don’t lie.
Kinda but what it really teaches us is to tell the truth and don’t lie
The end had me fucking crying 😭😂
5:35 that dog sounds like when you press buttons on a microwave lmao
Yo you right 😂
Ya
What if this fable were rewritten so that its moral would be, “Never give up on waiting for a disaster to happen even if it means you really have to wait forever although someone already tried to trick you! Therefore, do not mind deceptions in any case because you never know whether or not they’ll turn into the truth!” That’s how Facebook behaves when people start new accounts and pretend to be someone else whom already has an account and is already known by others! I keep telling them to somehow include a security camera so that whoever starts an account can show a valid form of ID and/or get caught for any suspicious posts or comments on pages or groups before anyone else notices immediately!
Legends say...
The boy is still running from the wolf.
I thought the wolf had him for dinner.
@@billdougan4022
Bet he did by swallowing him.
Greatest chase music of alltime in this video
I love this. I remember when GBVK featured this, and I was like "THEY DUBBED AN ANIME?!"
Legend says that the wolf is still chasing Nathan to this day...
The little boy 👦 just so adorable with such a cute voice even I’ve beg for help and scream so cute and adorable but too bad mobile phone was not invented at his time so bored he cry both CLASSIC but just so cute LOVE IT
That was years before Pokemon even existed!
The way the wolf roared at 8:09 was a sure sign that his vocal effects were provided by Frank Welker.
I'm not trying to say you're incorrect but that is actually a bobcat roar I know this because I did a little search history on youtube and compared them.
Trust me, that wasn't him. I can tell.
I think the reason why the wolf just went for the boy was so the rest of his pack can devour his flock of sheep!
Sheep can't destroy sheep . The only thing that matters is the shepherd and at that if he destroys his own flock then he is a fake shepherd
Love it when Wolfy chases him serves him right looks like he's gonna be Wolfy's meal.
The kid in the end died of exhaustion and if that didn't kill him the wolf did
I remember an old Aesop's Fables series in an old anime style on VHS that I'd check out at my local library when I was younger. I've tried to search all over the internet to find them again, but I can't. I only remember a few of the episodes, specifically the one with the donkey who heard 3 little ants singing beautifully. He asked how they could sing so well and they told him they just ate dew. So all he does is eat dew and drink from his water trough, and by the end of the episode he's so weak and frail, but he insists on his all dew diet and as he tries to move to get some more he falls down and dies.
I don't remember any monkeys though?
This might be rather scary😢
I remember being me to watch this in pre-K
Trials: Wolf and sheep
Participant count: 12
Participant pass count: 4
Rules: There will be 4 spots for wolf role and it will be assigned to 4 random participants. The sheep must find the wolf by looking into the participant who has the wolf role. When the time limit has been reached, the collar on the participant who has the sheep role will explode.
Head start: Participants with wolf role may enter the arena. Sheep role, please wait at the lobby until the wolf head start timer is ended.
I guess the reason the wolf went after the boy instead of the sheep was because the wolf's owner, Satan has seen enough of Nathan's tricks, and decides to kill Nathan by sending his angry wolf out. I guess the wolf was angry because Nathan cried wolf too many times.
Holy shit that makes perfect sense
Omggg I've been looking for this for actual years!
Ashley Boyce me too. I used to watch this in the 80s
I found it in 2 secs
There was another cartoon on this same tape... Trying to find that too.

This is a lesson to always tell the truth, when it happens, you will need the help.
Do not lie children.
How nostalgic
Thank you I love the boy who cried wolf!
I rememember they did a segment of this on Garfield & Friends, but they reversed the roles. lol
That kid is gonna need to catch his breath some time
The story fades out at 10:07 with the wolf still chasing Nathan. It's like a bit of a cliffhanger. This version of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" ended with Nathan and the wolf's fates unknown.
Here's my ending to this story. The Beast from Beauty and the Beast would come in and rescue the boy.
A writing technique to facilitate psychological closure. In aesop, the boy lives and learns his lesson. Here, it may deviate from the original story telling to impress upon the young audience members for whom this is made that a lie may have grave consequences. I assumed the boy was eventually eaten when I watched this as a kid on VHS.
Alas, I've grown to become a fine, FINE Bullshitter.
They set it up pretty well to be able to figure it out. The boy is killed and dragged back to the woods for munching.
no im done with this story is a disgrace to aesop fable and i will give this a middle finger🖕😭😒😣
@@edkerns7868 Yep, and the villagers don't even give a care to see if he's okay, probably thinking he ran away, or they knew about it, and decide to leave him to die, possibly to use his death as a way to scare kids straight that if they do what he did, they would left to be eaten by the wolf as a death sentence.
I feel like they just combined Pokemon and Rugrats for this cartoon
A liar is worse than a thief, of course.
8:50 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Another story: The Commenter who cried ZAK WOLF!
I think that boy would think twice before he comes up something stupid and dangerous cuz crying for wolf is not funny, its dangerous.
So Who Are Those Monkeys.
Nathan should've just stood up for himself and fought back at the wolf. Find something to hurt the wolf with and chase him out of town since no one would help him.
I think the wolf has changed his appetite: from livestock to liars.
I understand why they didn’t come to help the boy, but did the boy eventually escape or did the villagers finally see it or worse did the wolf actually eat him! Not to mention when the wolf bit his behind I think it bit his private part too!
Back in the '60's, the boy got eaten. Nowadays, the boy called the Dept of Labor and sued the town for a million dollars.
The real ending is that the boy was eventually caught and eaten by the wolf. The villagers eventually noticed his absence after a while and realized he really was telling the truth, but they said how could they have known after all his jokes which is basically rephrasing the lesson of the story.
@@youzettasonsofdigits1639
It's very satisfying when he gets chased by the Wolf.
Though they were pretty sparse on the end credits, I see they mention Intersound as the studio they did the voice recordings at, they were pretty instrumental in producing English and foreign language dubs of all sorts of productions over the years including Japanese cartoons.
dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/Intersound
Christopher Sobieniak would you happen to know the name of the chase scene song? I've heard it several places over the years.
Golden book video is now anime book video
However, people have to know that sometimes even a liar tells the truth, and they have to check first before going out to help, to make sure if they're telling the truth.
I remember watching this back in 3rd grade
I saw this in elementary school too! I just can't remember which grade.
Wolf: Why bother with your sheep, when I can have a liar like you for breakfast?
The tree branch that fell on the wolf made him angrier.
7:58 Normal scared face
8:02 XDDDDDDDDDD Scaredy cat!
3:38 Hey! There all here! Safe and sound every one of them!
You Should Have Said I Being Series I Promise I Will Never Cry Wolf Again I Really Promise.
what is this thing at 9 50
it's generally good to tell the truth and not lie, but there might be some situations where lying would be justified and maybe even the right thing to do. for example, if you lied because someone asked you something that was none of their business, then lying in a situation like that might be justified. what
if someone captured you and forced you to give them a yes or no answer to if you had an uncle, where if you said yes, they're break your feet with a sledgehammer, but you really did have an uncle, so your feet would get smashed if you told them the truth, but where they would let you go and leave you be if you lied, of course you would lie. if a situation like that, of course you would say that you don't have an uncle even if you really did have one.
Lying is never "good" or "the right thing to do" If someone asks a question you don't want to answer then don't answer or say "no way in hell I'm telling you".
Lying is a privilege humanity has abused for far too long and needs to be stripped of entirely, especially those in positions of power.
The mayor sounds like squidward
Yes but it's not Rodger Bumpass
This video was shown to us in elementary school. And taught us all a lesson. But it’s too bad this video had to have a sad ending.
3:49 - Nathan sure made a scary face
That wolf is chasing nathan which is so funny because it reminds me of Scooby Doo. I love nathan’s scary face when he gets to see a real wolf for the first time. Why is that wolf chasing him even though that there’s sheep for it to eat? Well I guess that wolf needs to teach him a lesson about not lying and making false alarms for being mischievous for a real emergency. Guess it’s KRAMA. 😆😂
The mayor has been humiliated three times, all because of Nathan's bad jokes
What’s the song between 10:15 and 10:45
Do you have more of these or just this one and Wolf and the Lamb? I need to find them all!
Any joy? I was looking for the Vain Crow?
It seems the story brand is: "Aesop's Fables of Patience & Honesty" and the producer of this specific version is supposedly "Nippon Animation".
With that said, the list seems to be:
1. The Sun and the Moon
2. Mercury and the Woodman
3. The Fox and the Stork
4. The Lion and the Mouse
5. The Crow and the Pitcher
6. The Fox and the Grapes
7. The Wolf and the Lamb ( ruclips.net/video/Th9tiGUUd-4/видео.html )
8. The Hare and the Tortoise
9. The Fox and the Crow
10. The Boy Who Cried Wolf (This Video)
It seems the actual name of this particular instance is: Manga Aesop Monogatari ( ruclips.net/video/P9WJyOsS08Y/видео.html ) it was indeed created by Nippon Animation, directed by Eiji OKABE, character design by Isamu Kumata. Unfortunately IMDB refuses to list this version which means I had to resort to other sources such as "Anime News Network"
Here is anther one I was able to find, look for those 3 monkeys and you're on the right track. Seems everyone likes to list it by a different name which is why it is so hard to find.
ruclips.net/video/mvxXvMv7rtE/видео.html
Last but not least, Nippon Animation has a small info page dedicated to it on their website and they list it as "Aesop's Fables" with the description:
"The tales have entertained thousands of boys and girls all over the world, and have also brought pleasure to the whole family. We proudly present well-known tales such as “Ant and the Grasshopper”, “The Fox With his Tail Cut Off”, “North Wind and the Sun”, “Lion and the Mouse”, “Rabbit and Turtle”, “Deer and the Lion”, “Crow and the Birds”, “Town Mouse and the Country Mouse”, “The Travelers and the Bear”, “The Hen Who Lays Golden Eggs”, and many more!
Three red, blue and yellow monkeys named Ton, Tan, and Ti appear at the end of each episode to summarize the story and give their opinions, thereby communicating with young viewers and their families.
This is a must-have collection of brilliant animated tales for the generations."
There's also a "contact us" button so perhaps you can inquire about where you can buy a copy from.
Also there's credits at 10:45. On this particular video cassette there was only "The Wolf and the Lamb" and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" both of which were uploaded by Zak Wolf. produced by Jim Bousman and DIck Baka (as are most of what are called "Golden Book Videos")
They should edit this and put Caliou in the boy's place.
I hope that boy gets what he deserves!
Barring getting eaten by the wolf.
@@johncritic6997
In some versions he does get eaten by The Wolf
At least the sheep are ok
@Josiah & Jachen ‘s Ultraverse I'm sure a village came out eventually and chased the wolf away. And the boy learned his lesson
@Josiah & Jachen ‘s Ultraverse Either way the children watching this learned not to lie
@Josiah & Jachen ‘s Ultraverse you forget my friend, there are different versions of every story
@Josiah & Jachen ‘s Ultraverse first of all rude. Second of all its just something I call everyone
@Josiah & Jachen ‘s Ultraverse I kinda was. Lol sorry😅
So the Boy has a terrible job at counting sheep? That’s more reasonable than just crying wolf for no reason.
that goku run tho
There sure were alot of cartoons of this story. Some of the versions that I know is,
This video, where the liar is Nathan
Sesame Street's Telling The Truth (Liar Leo)
Between the Lions the boy who cried wolf. (Liar Shane, My idea of naming the unamed shepard.)
What else is there? Also, those 2 bits of the mayor looking silly IS funny! LOL
Well, there was an adaptation of The Boy Who Cried Wolf in Muppet Classic Theater starring Gonzo.
11:16 Hard to get sued by a company that no longer exists.
The big bad wolf!🐺
Some parts of the story were a little funny but It was rude that nobody came to save he.
What is the first animal that he sees? Is it a fox?
1:54
A low quality portrayal of a fox, but yes, it's either a Fox or a Jackal.
You can see the long snout, the whiskers, the long erect ears (foxes are portrayed with long ears, though you're more likely to see ears like that on a Jackal), and a thick bushy tail. Jackals don't have bushy tails so it's more likely than not a fox.
@@TheZombiesAreComing
Bet he gets eaten alive by Wolf.
@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376
that would be karmic justice
The wolf would go after the sheep not after the boy
Maybe he was just tired of Nathan's tricks so he decided to chase him instead.
7:55 The madness begins..... now!
Scared me
It's backwards y'all asking me for help . Crying wolf lie n to me then when you really need help I'm probably gonna think it's an other game . Which is weird this original story you don't know but exist and the relevance with my name and situation kinda like someone was already know since back then
The animation reminds me of Lupin the 3rd
8:11 the secret Joestar technique
Who's That, Bert !
4:32=HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAA
Holy damn! This was recorded at intersound!!!
What's that?
He probably ended up even worse than Yannick Míklos from Hungary.
i dont remeber this episode of toys in japan
10:09
So why does the wolf go after the boy and not the sheep?
Maybe because he knows the boy was guarding the sheep?
Now that is a much better answer than I could have anticipated.
On the other hand, there is the fact that the boy cowardly ran away from the pasture leaving the sheep alone with the wolf. But instead of eating the helpless sheep, the wolf goes after the running boy
Much like Beauty and the Beast, I know Zeke Wolf said it already, but I want to say it too, that story had a bad feral wolf in it, a typical one. Much like the wolves in Beauty and the Beast, that's just making wolves in other media look bad.
