I bet there is a granny (if not YOUR actual DNA granny) at your church who would be happy to sew one for you; usually that type of thing is taken care of by the God-parents/sponsor... I think you could wear a potato-sack if you had nothing else; I don't think it would corrupt the sacrament... congratulations on your baptism! ❤️👍🥳

I would already not buy them (I have yet to purchase ANY icon, real or fake) because they are too expensive and they look cheap/fake, and they are not even reproductions of famous icons... (I don't have THE "Vladimir", or THE "Axion Estin", but I have nicely-made facsimiles of the real things, acquired as gifts that were purchased from various reputable monasteries/churches/sketes, so at least they LOOK right.)

I inherited a Mosaic icon of the Theotokos from my late aunt that she acquired from a Uniate iconographer at the Vatican. It’s very beautiful but I realized I could not depend on a Roman Blessing anymore (since my conversion), so I immediately had my local priest give it a proper blessing. I cherish it now as the center piece of my Icon Corner. It’s also very expensive. I think it cost her $400.

My wife, on a cruise to Barbados, saw in a market there carved icons of the Theotokos, and she said they had a terrible vibe about them. Voodoo and related cults tend to incorporate Christian symbols, and she she was certain this was one such.

Sigh. Rome’s never taken competent responsibility for screwing up the missionary work for the ex slaves of Haiti, Jamaica and New Orleans. However, Oriental Orthodox have nearly taken over Jamaica, albeit strangely quietly. While still in error regarding Chalcedon, they are far and away the lesser heresy as they don’t tolerate voodoo at all, especially Paganizing icons. Jamaica is thriving.
Poor, confused Haiti, just have misfortune after misfortune from dabbling with so many demons, not to mention falling victim to even worse witches, like the Rodham family and Clinton foundation.
If Voodoo worked reliably, an army of zombies would have taken her down years ago after what she pulled.

I agree that there is something "off" about these images... When we see people like "Joan of Arc" and "Francis of Assisi" and "Teresa of Avila" depicted in a cheap pseudo-Byzantine manner, (they do look computer-generated, now that it's been mentioned), there should definitely be some sort of examination and exposure, as this video does very well... I'm glad that all the icons in my house are authentically Orthodox, even if I myself am not.

    • @eldermillennial8330

Greek Uniate iconography follows all the same rules as Orthodox. Of course, Orthodox should only use ones depicting Western Saints in full halo if they reposed before the Schism, although I’m open to ones who reposed before 1204 if the icon lacks a halo. I regard that era as a grey period. But like the One of the Theotokos I inherited from my Roman Catholic Aunt, a beautiful mosaic, I simply had it blessed right away, and now is a centerpiece of my icon corner.

Haven’t seen an update from you for awhile.
I’ve got this idea for making videos pertaining to the Western Orthodox liturgy of the hours, to fill in the gaps that Father Patrick Cardine does not have time for. He always does Lauds, and now usually does vespers, so what I had in mind is maybe some of us could get together to fill in the gaps for the remaining six daily prayers. We could have six people, one who does Matins, another Prime, another Terce, another Sext, yet another None, and finally someone would do Compline. Compline changes very seldom and is short, so the person in charge of that would also do research in advance into which Saints we should focus on, perhaps keeping in touch with Cardine so that we always follow the same Saint of the day.
Matins is so long, that we might need to divide it between two people, one does the Psalms, the other does the lessons and hymn of the day.
We then start a special Western Orthodox Hours channel and upload our videos there, in the correct order, with a Link to Saint Patrick’s Orthodox for the Lauds and vespers, or ask Father Patrick if we can mirror his on ours.
      What do you think?

I originally noticed this when I had gone to the store to buy one of those ubiquitous glass Catholic Saint prayer candles for my mother who is Catholic (I was raised Catholic but am converting to Orthodoxy now). As I was selecting a candle i noticed right alongside the candles of Christian saints, Mary, and Jesus, were New Age candles for spells and luck and other occult practices. I picked one from each section up and read the labels, and of course both types were made by the manufacturer called Light of Christ (which I came to find out later is in fact the orginal name of the organization behind Monestary Icons.) I was horrified to see that the candles that were used by countless devout Catholics in their prayer life were produced by the same company that produced occult products. After that I did a lot of research and study about the ways that other occult and pagan groups and traditions have adopted Christian saints and imagery to use in their own spiritual prayer, and even to "mask" their pagan religious practices behind Christian symbols and names so that they can continue to worship their pagan gods in secret when they live in predominantly Christian cultures. (This is very prominent in Central America and in the practices of whichcraft spiritually like Santoria in Latin American communities in the US.). It definitely made me realize I had to be discerning and careful about where I got my religious items from. I mean, ALL of the little palm reader and "psychic" reader shops in my area have Mary and Jesus statues right in their front yards. Those objects are NOT holy, they are satanic and created as such! So creepy and unnerving.

So there is no need to keep all the holy pictures you have. No sin, no disrespect when you throw them away. You can, say take them to church and leave them on the pews, perhaps someone might be interested in taking them. I’m publishing a weekly RUclips video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. Thank you for making this video. When we became Orthodox (America) 7 years ago, no one told us about this group and they were among the first results in a google search. Our first set of Christ and Theotokos came from them as did my Saint Mary Magdalene icon. Later we found out the true nature of this group and I went to my Priest (a different one than the one who blessed the icons and didn't know or didn't tell us) to ask what to do. He said since they were blessed they were fine to use, but he did say they always unsettle him. Something about the eyes, he said. He said if we wanted we could burn them. So.. for years I have struggled with these. They were up for a long time, mainly because of the pressure I got put under by other parishioners. Most were of the opinion that if they were blessed I shouldn't worry. Eventually I took them all down. Its not that I am afraid of them, but that every time I look at them I think of this group and it pollutes my prayer time. I often feel like my faith is weak that I can't just "get over it" and have faith in the blessing. I do have faith in the blessing. Its the purity that is at issue. So now they sit in a stack and I feel weird about burning them because they were blessed, but I don't know what to do with them otherwise. It is so strange how conflicted I've been over these dumb pictures.

I have always made the point of getting my icons from monasteries I visit, or through commissioning them from an iconographer I know personally (the only way for some obscure saints, and a good place to check the canonical ness of any icon). Although I will occasionally get icons from Charity shops or markets to bring them back into proper use (they are always once I can recognise as proper icons). It is always good however to know what and who to avoid.

My local Ukrainian Catholic Church, probably 50 years ago, but tons of these things to cover their walls and icons for a low price I imagine. When I first noticed what they were on my second visit, I suggested to one of them, a man, that they should be burnt. This man vehemently disagreed with me.
Considering how much incense has been poured on them over the past 50 years, I suspect they are mostly harmless these days, but you can still identify them. I've mostly gotten over it, but it is nevertheless troubling.

A (second) question *gasp* : how much does the manner in which we depict saints matter, or the Theotokos or Christ? I don't mean breaking iconographic conventions, but rather, depicting Jesus without a beard or with short hair for example. For figures whose likeness we have a good idea of I can understanding sticking to something relatively accurate, but how much does accuracy actually matter?
I'm also thinking of icons of Saint Constantine for example, who likely had short hair and no beard, yet is depicted with Christ-like hair and beard much of the time.
