Honestly Whiplash accurately portrays a demanding band. The redos, the trumpets making random noises when cut off, the feeling of bs when you are the only one who does not have the music ready, the feeling that everyone is looking at you when you redo over and over. Amazing film honestly

I can't figure out if this film is fantasy or comedy, but I'd agree the acting was excellent and the music was enjoyable. The scariest scene was the car accident. The funniest scene was the three drummers doing caravan for about 5 hours.
Why would it be fantasy? Or comedy? I mean, I fucking lost it every time Simmons threw creative insults at people, but it was a really dark humor. The film wasn't really glorifying that dark humor, making you almost feel guilty about laughing at it (even though it presented it in an almost comical way), so I don't think it would classify as comedy. This was, in truth, a really well done drama

The Ardrey Kell Mighty Knight Jazz Band played this theme yesterday (5/12) for their concert. It was awesome and very fun to play. No chairs were thrown in the rehearsal of that version, though.
I wish we could've played this in our honors band. We still got to play challenging songs like Gaelforce and American Barndance, but this would've been even better!

yeah, and if you actually look closely at the sheets in the film, they wrote it in 14/8. I suppose they did that because of different accents between the rhythmic bars mainly done by the snare drum and hihat. Don't know if that's actually necessary tho
There are characters like Fletcher in all industries. I'm a graphic designer and illustrator, and when I just got out of college I had met one such personality. These guys aren't that impressive themselves- but they make use of your naivety, gloat and make themselves look big. Then start belittling you and make you feel like their the only ones who can save you. And you'll do everything you can to please them. And the abuse ensues- they'll even tell you that "lack passion" if you can't out up with their abuse. If you are in a situation like this with a mentor, just get out. It's not worth it, there's nothing they can offer to you if abuse is the only way they can get across whatever they're trying to teach.

It's kind of weird hearing people talk about this film as if it's a fantasy or unrealistic. I really enjoyed there film because of the realism of life as a music major -- many of us have harsh directors or teachers that will tear us down in the hopes that it motivates us. Or maybe just to be an asshole. The jury's out right now 🙃 but for real, the film was super well done and I think it definitely shows how far a lot of motivated music students are willing to go to get what they want. I've practiced for hours on end on upright bass and had my fingers end up bleeding all over the fingerboard and so there was that extra relatability with the whole bandaid thing, haha.
This song especially the intro is superb man. It's just the right tempo, and not a single acapella can be heard. I'm willing to leave that Mars bar if this was playing in the street.

The jury's out right now 🙃 but for real, the film was super well done and I think it definitely shows how far a lot of motivated music students are willing to go to get what they want. I've practiced for hours on end on upright bass and had my fingers end up bleeding all over the fingerboard and so there was that extra relatability with the whole bandaid thing, haha.

This song especially the intro is superb man. It's just the right tempo, and not a single acapella can be heard. I'm willing to leave that Mars bar if this was playing in the street.
