This is literally the best way of explaining to people why I can't/don't really do New Years Resolutions. I DIED at "Hey can I help knock down your dominos, your dominos look cooler than my dominos" because that is literally me ALL THE TIME. I call it being a productive procrastinator! You had some really great content this year, and you should be very proud of yourself! Thanks for helping this fellow brain out

Courtney Olivo YES!! I died when she said that too because it is SO TRUE!! I was talking to my MIL earlier tonight and she was telling me her and my FIL are in a rush to get their living room painted because he has to go back to work sooner than they anticipated. I told her she could call if she wanted me to help paint tomorrow and I’d come help. I honestly said something to the affect “it will get me out of my house and away from all of the stuff I should be doing at home”! I don’t even like to paint!! And to be honest I’m not a big fan of my MIL! 😂🤣 I need serious help 🤦🏻‍♀️🙃

When I was first diagnosed with ADHD, the first thing my Dr did (along with prescribing medication) was to have me build a routine with 3 things in the morning, and 3 things at night. So 3 things I do every morning I wake up, and 3 things I do before going to bed every night. It sounds so simple, but it's so difficult! Glad there are professionals who understand the importance of routine building and other things for non-NT brains! :)

Help me. I have a nice short to-do list. What was not on my list, was sorting about 2 year old admin papers, bills etc. But suddenly I had divided them in stacks. Yay! 🙆‍♂️But, and here is where I need the help: I've got a stack miscellaneous. These papers don't belong to any other stack. But I want to keep them. Invitations of that great party, that boat trip folder.
What do you do in this situation?
Always when I declutter (every year 🤔) I have this stuff that belongs nowhere. It's a big problem for me. It's holding me back to start.
      So, what do you do?

As a nanny and a preschool teacher (working with young children is perfect for my ADHD brain because our attention span is about the same length!), I am SO GOOD at keeping a daily routine on the days that I work. I teach in the morning, nanny in the afternoon, so Monday-Friday my day is: Wake up, shower, school starts, wash hands, circle time, free play, art, snack, music, recess, go home, eat lunch, play with kiddos, go home, eat dinner, basic chores, relax, go to bed." Then...on the weekends...I sometimes forget to eat...or even get out from behind my computer screen. Looks like I need to work on a weekend routine for myself. This video is great! I found myself both relating immensely and laughing hysterically! Isn't so much of ADHD learning how to laugh at ourselves? Thank you so much! I adore every video. They make me feel less alone!

I've never had so many changes at once while caring for my family and I feel like I'm in a big, deep hole. It's scary in here, but even more scary is that once I start working again, I have to start the new routine thing over...again.

One thing that helps me when I am overwhelmed is to make a "done did" list. instead of a to-do, just try to take time each day to write down everything you DID do. Often when I feel crappy about my productivity, I can realize I've actually accomplished more than my self-loathing brain is letting me see. It's encouraging and can help snowball a few more things each day.
Good luck to you in your new page of life.

I recently found your channel. I Haven't seen all the past videos yet but I am working on it. I love what you are doing. You are beautiful and Edward is lucky to have you. I was diagnosed with ADHD combined type just this year (2017) at 38 years old. I denied for, well, 38 years that I had it. I didn't want to be a zombie and "drugged up" all the time. I finally conceded and was tested after people at work started asking " do youv have ADHD?" The counselor my wife and I are seeing told me he wasn't qualified to diagnose, but he was sure I had it and I should talk to my doctor. My wife KNEW I had it too. Well I am coming to terms with my diagnosis and learning a lot about it. I also have been on Adderall for about 8 months and WOW! What a difference! The "noise" in my brain is gone with the meds. I can think clearer, prioritize and remember!!! I started a new job also that I always dreamed of but never thought possible for me to do. I work in the Operating Room as a Circulating Nurse. I love the job and ADHD with meds actually makes it easier to do my job. I love "how to ADHD" I am working on figuring out the patreon page to help support what you do because what you do helps support me in what I do. Thank you so much Jessica and Edward for what you do!!!

I’ve been having a really hard time with executive functions lately and feeling hopeless about it - I know the basic principle of habits/routines but felt so discouraged because when I get like this NOTHING is automatic so there’s nothing to attach things to. Like even brushing teeth (the classic “easy” example) doesn’t happen until like 5pm sometimes if I’m not going anywhere. So when you said, like it was no big deal, “Don’t have anything you do every day? That’s okay! Waking up counts!” it legitimately brought me to tears. Thank you so much, I’m now subscribed and can’t want to watch more of your videos.

Hannah Reeves it’s good you have fun without them. Sometimes I didn’t do anything at all when off med and just binged on TV/reading. I have so much to do around my house (organising/renovating), my garden (planting, building, installing irrigation) and just recently purchased a website for this business idea I came up with. I actually enjoy doing these things though when on my med and I love finishing and the sense of accomplishment. I just have trouble prioritising right now so I’ll do all this “fun stuff” but not make dinner for example.

Sitting here in 2024 and this video helps so much! I watch a lot of your newer videos but figured this one was still relevant. Pointing out that routines can change and take habits with them really helped put some things into perspective. I used to write a massive fanfic consistently. During most of my college years I wrote a new 7k word chapter every two weeks with very little deviation! I reached over half a million words! Thousands of pages, literally!
Then I graduated and for the last three years I've struggled to write anything over months. I didn't realize just how much the writing process (which helped my mental health and just generally feeling accomplished and creatively fulfilled) was tied in with my weekly school schedule (I would even put it in with my assignments. Chapter 30 due Friday. Essay due Monday. Test next Wednesday...) And now that I'm fully remote in my career, it's been pretty hard to manually build it up again. Starting small with things I know I can reliably lean on (like when I have coffee or when my pets need their meals) is an amazing first step and I really really appreciate it.

This is sooooo good! I have a (huge) problem with decluttering the house. If I divide this in a few routines with three tasks, eventually I am able to master this. I see the light!!! (again). Making your bed MUST be done everyday. And if 'I feel like it' I can make a routine like: 1. Fill dishwasher, 2. Declutter kitchen counters, 3. Take out trash.
So every time I fill the dishwasher, I automatically do 3 things.
I can't declutter the whole kitchen of course, but after a few times doing this routine it is done.
    Very hopeful. Thanks!

Growing up when I did, you were labeled “that kid”. Graduating High School was a challenge and finishing college was ......... fortunately, I married a woman who was very supportive and I was diagnosed in my mid 20’s. Once medicated, I finished school and thrived. Now, an Assistant Principal, I try and help students and parents understand and work together. I might not have had friends growing up and been the “black sheep” of my family, I would not change a thing because it made me who I am now. I have 3 boys and 2 are also diagnosed.

All your videos are amazing and are helping me get back the 45 years I lost before diagnosis in 9/17, but this video is especially AWESOME and well timed!! That little character is so me!
Been wondering my whole life why I just can't be on time, meet a deadline, stay with any one thing, procrastinate on everything except things I find exciting, buried in clutter, why I go into a room to get a paper clip and reemerge 2 hours later having reorganized a bookshelf in the room but without the paper clip, take 6 hours to complete a 1 hour online course, have 25 tabs open on 3 different browsers, etc!
One thing I just found which is SAVING my life is Echo Dot! Alexa reminds me all day to do the things I need to but never get around to. It automatically make my brain shift from LATER/NOT NOW mode into NOW mode. Anyone else had success using this?

The way you used dominos to visual rep this is awesome! I decided ages ago that I wasn’t going to have New Years resolutions but instead a New Year’s Day resolution. One. One resolution that was going to be fun and exciting for the first day of 2018 and that was to go to the movies and see Star Wars. Happy New Years from Australia!

I always make the bed when I wake up. It helps a lot because I don't even think when doing it and when I remember about something I have to do later, I'm thinking "thank the gods the bed is already organized" instead of "Oh gosh, I have to organize the bed first".

Amazing. I cackled when the finger person ran away to look at someone else’s dominos.
Also, great ideas. Thank you. I’m making an appointment with my doctor (it’s in my new bullet journal) as soon as they reopen for the new year to discuss the possibility of me having ADHD. It was your videos that made me realize how much an ADHD brain sounds exactly like my brain. So thanks for that too!

This is the most awesome thing I've ever seen on the internet. How have I never had a therapist tell me this? I must have watched this video 15 times by now. The only thing missing is you don't say how long you should give yourself before adding a 2nd habit

My therapist is always adamant about establishing routines, but never really told me why except to help me get better. Naturally I...wasn't really interested. NOW THOUGH with the explanation it seems way better a thing than I thought it was before! Thanks so much!!

I watched it again and I realized that I have been doing this without having a name for it. I have changed many things this last two years and it's like this I have been doing it. Yeah! Probably going to be easier when I know what I am doing. Thanks for the your awesome help.

Why do routines exhaust me? I tried doing a morning routine, using the Brili app to make sure I do everything, brush teeth, take meds, wash my face, change my underwear, put my cereal bowl in the dishwasher, etc….nothing crazy. But then trying to do it the next day, or trying to also do a bedtime routine is just too much. I feel like I’m never going to be a functional adult

This is so perfect for me right now. So I passed the CPA exam which is amazing but not so much. For the past 3 years my life has been studying. Now that I am not studying I am so lost! I have all these things I want to do and seemingly so much time to do them but after work it just all the dominoes just fall on my head and I can’t even get to bed on time.
