Rocket Bicycle World Record ǀ 333 km/h (207 mph) ǀ Rider: François Gissy

  • On November 7th of 2014, on the Circuit Paul Ricard located at Le Castellet in South of France, I have reached a speed of 333 km/h on a rocket-propelled bicycle, after only 4.8 seconds of acceleration. A velocity of more than 300 km/h on a skinny and completely stripped bicycle, this is amazing, and a bit crazy! Who thought that one day a daredevil on a bicycle, with a rocket under the saddle, could travel the quarter mile in less than 7 seconds?
    Some data:
    0 to 333 km/h in 4.8 seconds
    Thrust: 4.51 kN / 460 kgf
    Peak acceleration: 3.05 g
    Average acceleration: 1.96 g
Peak deceleration at rocket shutoff (due to the aerodynamic drag): -1.4 g

I just found this video after stumbling across the land speed record for a bicycle (183.9mph). That record happened to be set by a woman and the comment section is nothing but insults and people saying the record is pointless and that anyone with money can just buy a record (because she had a team and a custom engineered bike and drafted). But on this video there is nothing but praise and comments about how this guy must have balls of steel and so on. It’s just hilarious to read through the two comment sections.

I once went 47 miles per hour on a mountain bike going down a long step grade road in Atlanta. The faster you go the harder it is to control your balance along with the physical and mental strain. The bike begins to feel like a brittle device ready to come apart any moment. The wind hits you in the face causing your eyes to water. You tuck into the bike the best you can. You feel fear yet stay with it because there isn’t any other option. Cars are passing inches from you on the left. Your attention is for debris that could throw you left into a car or to the right where a step falloff wouldn’t be an option.
Hats off to this rocket bike. I just don’t see how he could have done it.

Why not? There are very few stresses on them. The wheels are not driven, there are no side loads (straight line drag race) and as long as the bearings are good, there should be no issues.
At higher speeds the centrifugal force will put an even load from the hub to the rim, but this is tensile, which is what the spokes are designed for. As long as the rubber is stiff enough to accept centrifugal distortion the design is sound and very light weight.
