Great video and I look forward to every new one! My brassicas are knee high plus right now but I’m starting to see some red and yellow coloring towards the ends of the leaves. Just wondering if you had some insight into a deficiency I might have or if it is just drought. I’ve had less than 3 inches of rain here in northern mn since my plant date on July 25.
Had similar results with buckwheat no till - germination seemed to take a big hit but our soil is less sandy and is much more firm and compacted. That combined with high deer populations made it tough on the brassica plots. Also have parslane creeping through out plots but don’t mind it since deer will nibble on that while working the plots.
@@remingtonschneider3645 yeah harder soils with more clay you would most likely definitely have to crank out more seed. Our soil is a sandy loam so cultipacking actually works most of the seed in 1/4 deep or so. With heavy clay I would consider lightly discing top 1/2-1in after seeding to get more of the brassicas to germinate.
My buckwheat was 5 feet plus and seeded brassica and peas into it and rolled it over and sprayed. I’d say I’m looking at 75% return. Now considering changing it up next year. I have a lot of clay. Great vid as always. Thank you.
Yeah the no till brassicas don’t seem to do as good in clay soils because they get more compacted and it’s harder for the little seed sitting on top to root and start growing. The more clay the more seed you will need to broadcast to get a good stand it seems.
What was your buckwheat seed rate and how long was it growing before you terminated it? I had mine growing for 7 weeks before i killed it. It reseeded itself and completely took over 3 acres of plots
I planted the buckwheat June, 15 seeded brassicas July, 20. I’ve had issues with some coming back in the past but never enough to become an issue. None reseeded itself this year at 5 weeks after planting.
Generally when planting my brassicas I can get a 1/2 acre bag of wintergreens to last me 3/4 of an acre to a full 1 acre sometimes. When over-seeding into beans I broadcast thicker.

Awesome video. I been waiting for your Brassicas videos. Looks like u got some pig weed too.
Yeah, I got lots of hard to kill broadleafs in my plots.

Get your cereal rye in there and heavier on the radish in the fall.

Roughly how much are planting in each of those small plots?
