    Good to see the data! Consider repeating your test in 2025 with these varieties: Reid's Yellow Dent, Bloody Butcher Red, and Blue Hopi. My prior research revealed Reids has 3x the protein of modern hybrids, Red 4x, and Blue 5x plus more vitamins. One farmer with heavy deer pressure said the deer avoided their modern hybrids and emptied his heirloom out. Because they are heirloom open pollinated corn, you can save the best ears to you and replant seed next year. By selecting and replanting you can guide the genetics to have better stalks, open ear husks and the standability you want. Do note that all heirloom corn need more seed to seed spacing in a row than the modern hybrids, which will make for skinny stalks that break easier (I suspect Nutricrave is a version of Reids). I have tested 30in rows with 6 and 9in spacing (6 makes silage), 15in rows with 9 and 12in spacing, still a bit too tight but less weed pressure than 30in rows. This spring I'm planning on going to 20in rows with 9 and 12 in spacing. The extra seeds in the Nutricrave was most likely due to non-sorted kernels (field run) vs the modern hybrid were sorted for uniformity and more consistent planter pickup. Or could be smaller Nutricrave kernels in general and you need to use a different seed plate in the planter hopper. When you save your seed ears, hang them to dry and remove the tip and base kernels so you are left with all the most uniform middle section of the ear. Keep them on the cob until close to planting time (that's what the seed companies do).

      I will definitely do more nutrient analysis tests in the future. We planted some Indian corn varieties To sell at our pumpkin stand. It got really tall and the ears were 5-6 ft off the ground. Do those varieties get that big also. I planted them with a 1 row push planter. I did thin out the Indian corn by hand because I wanted big ears. I found a better plate I can use for NutriCrave next year. I have quite a bit of NutriCrave seed left over. It would definitely be interesting to see how the deer would respond to some other varieties like the red and blue as well.

    I had 100day Nutricrave planted this year in upper midwest. I also had too high of a population & lots of the plants stalk snapped like you pointed out. As a result the birds & other vermin consumed more than the deer however I had deer walk past cut field corn to get to my nutricrave. Take it for what you will

      @wisconsinwhitetail9744 8 дней назад

      The best Ariel views I have are from the food plot update videos I release at the end of the summer. Most of the bedding is on the 2 adjacent neighbors. We have some does that bed on us. In total we only have around 15 acres of cover. I have been doing my best to make it best I can. But 15 acres will never be able to complete with 80-100 acres nearby.

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744 8 дней назад

      @@stevedenoyer5956 that is at the family farm. At my dad‘s uncles farm we own the core bedding and nice bucks are bedding there every single day practically. We only have one small food plot there because it’s further away and have less equipment there. We have killed more nice bucks without doing hardly any habitat or food plot work. it makes a difference being able to hunt near bedding lol. That farm is quite a bit bigger but every year it seems like there’s nicer bucks at the family farm just a better genetic area and probably more deer as well.

      I’m thinking of trying Milo this year for a late season attraction. A lot of guys have been having good luck with it. I don’t have enough area for corn or soybeans to be an effective strategy. The Milo leaves are not attractive so the deer leave it alone until the seed heads dry down.

      Yep. In heavy wooded areas they will hit them a lot harder. Around us it’s 75% ag so these deer usually are not too hungry until later in the year. Every year we have a couple that get damaged so we can’t sell those. Maybe 5% of the crop gets damaged before harvest.

    Why would anyone that wants to improve habitat for wildlife plant red cedar. I guess if you already have it on the property but it is deadly for apple and pear trees upto 2 miles away (cedar rust). There are much better options still creating screens, bedding, windbreak, travel corridors, and thermal cover, with out jeopardizing soft mast on your or neighboring property owners. I cringe everytime i hear of it being planted in the country rather then suburbs. There are certain soft mast species that are resistant to cedar rust. Just they are not immune to it but shiws resistance to the disease. Similar to oak wilt and why i suggest white oak vs red oak or anything in the red oak family. White oak shows resistance to oak wilt but is not immune it can and has limited growth and mast production. It just rarely will kill white oak. Best of luck with your habitat improvement.
