    I feel like I should pay money for this video. This one is really quite impressive. The last tip is likely the best of them all. With that said, remember your subscriber base too - we deal with a TON of long serves that are tricky too. Just an idea for a follow up. I'm already thinking I need my partner to send me short to the forehand and long to the backhand 50/50. I just learned so much that my mind is mush now. The lifting heavy backspin is something I needed right now - I'm struggling against this and I can't wait to start working on it - my practice partner actually has heavy spin. He is learning to use lighter spin now too...ugh, serve return is so complex.

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  4 года назад +31

      Haha yeah I figured I would just put it out there for everyone who finds my channel. Yeah how to practice is just as important as what to practice!
      Your right long serves are tough, I think they are actually more tough than short because there can be more spin and are faster, its just that the risk is higher when a person serves long for their opponent to hit a winning shot so pros don’t serve long that often because they want to have control over the outcome and not leave it up to their opponent. Good players spend a lot of time practicing long serves early on because its the gateway to a higher level. I think its most important to learn to spin the ball with heavy back and side spin serves because you can delete the spin that’s on the ball and put on your own, anytime you can do that you decrease the difficulty of the long serves.

      Yeah just look at He Zhi Wen - destroys opponents with long serve. Long serves are underrated and I started using them when I realized they put you into a rally immediately, rather than messing around with short steps for short game.

    Great video. Maybe this is obvious, but all the advice assumes that both the server and receiver are right-handed. If the server is left-handed all of the FH Natural serves become FH Non-natural serves and vice versa. Same if the receiver is left-handed. If both players are lefties they cancel each other out and the serves remain as described.

    Thanks for the awesome explanations. Of all the tt videos I have seen over the years, yours stand apart 😊
    It would be great if you could also show how to return a short reverse pendulum topspin service that lands on the forehand side. I always pop it up when pushing from my forehand. I know I can flick it, but just wanted to understand the technique to push such serves.

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  3 года назад +2

      There are a couple ways to return that serve and you have to find the one that suits the way you play. Some players like to come in and just angle the racket pretty perpendicular to the ball and let the spin and energy bounce it back over, others like to go with the spin in much the same manner think Timo boll he does this one a lot and then others like to go with the spin and chop down on it like Fan Zhendong his angle will be more open and pointing to the ceiling than the others not bu much but a little more and the downward motion counteracts the topspin that is on the ball and going with the spin stops the ball from biting the rubber and throwing it somewhere you don’t want it to

    I understand all the terminology used and am an avid viewer of TT videos, lower-intermediate level player. Full of theoretical knowledge. But this video is by far the MOST CONFUSING I have seen. Appreciate your effort and you do have something new to say. Why not do a simplified version? Or break it into parts. I just wish I could understand it fully. For eg the "the let the ball come to you" part was very well articulated. One of my earlier coaches struggled to explain the same even on table.
    Many of the others ...just confusing words vs visuals. For those who claim to understand them, well..try them out practically...

    Thank you for a very good video. The illustration is amazingly clear. I wonder if you have any video showing how to handle long and high, instead of short and low, underspin/backspin balls. My kid has a hard time handling long and high spinning balls. Any smash would hit the ball to the net. An example of such situations is that my kid serves heavy underspin and the opponent pushes it. However, the push lifts the ball up high and keeps the spin remaining heavy, long, and high. My kid thought it would be an easy smash and 100% of the time when she smashes, the ball hits the net. Thanks in advance.

      Yeah It takes patients and just waiting for the ball to come down a bit and then loop it is the more prudent shot.

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  2 года назад

      Yeah those are nasty tough, many top players push the the ball but don’t push under the ball instead the push a little more towards the back of the ball and push downwards with much spin Ma long, Patrick Fransiska, and Truls do this one very often and very well.

    Hey, just found your channel it is a great channel with the best content, you have nailed it down as you walk it through and then you demostraste it in practice so it is easy to pick it up.
    Although for me sometjing is not quite clear is how you lift up the ball. Would you just hit it in an upward motion?
    Thanks

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  2 года назад +1

      Hi glad you like it, yeah I just slowly lift the ball try not to bounce it up just lift it

  • @zizo015
    @zizo015 2 года назад

    Thanks Seth. There is a point with going with or against the spin in both natural and non FH natural FH serve return which is unclear. Do you block the spin direction (racket angle adjustment) regardless of if you are going with or against the spin? For me it seems like you or especially Ma Long in that return are keeping the racket relatively parallel to the net. That is probably the reason why the ball went to the left following the spin.. What if the position where you hit the ball is more critical? For example if you receive a BH serve more in your left with FH and without blocking the spin direction (net parallel racket)? you won't have enough space and the ball will likely go out of the table to the left. Therefore I think the angle needs to be adjusted based on available space. Sometimes you know you the space and let the incoming spin do the placement for you like Ma long in that return. Hope u can understand. Many thanks

    • @PechPongTT
      @PechPongTT  2 года назад +1

      Hi i believe that I understand what you are talking about, this is actually a strategy I use against players, if they are having good success when i serve to their short forehand I shift my serve over slightly to the left and try to get them to accidentally use a forehand they become uncomfortable because they are not in the right position physically and also like you said they run out of space on the other side of the table. the solution is instead of being parallel to the net you must "close the direction" ( racket pointing to opponents backhand) and go with the spin still. the whole reason you go with the spin is to go to the opponents short forehand if you want to place it to the backhand its much easier to cut on the left side of the ball (against the spin) or even easier to come in with a backhand and use the natural angle to cut it wide to opponents backhand. i Hope this explains what you were talking about.

    pick up a ball that flies towards you with reverse spin! Brilliant in its simplicity. I used to lose most of the backspin / backspin rallies. Now, when I use a ball lift and use my opponent's backspin, I win most rallies.
    The other tips are also very helpful and inspiring.

    • @PechPongTT

      Hey! Yeah it is tough at first, but there are about 7 or so main serves used and once you’ve memorized them and know what they look like then returning them become much easier then it just becomes a matter of seeing the slight differences in contact. It’s the hardest part of the game really
