  • Originally conceived as an independent fund raising effort to rescue the financially ailing Boston & Maine Railroad Historical Society, Ashpit Video Productions Ltd's: Volume 1 - Boston & Maine Railroad - West End, gained immediate acceptance among railfans around the Northeast. Original footage was shot using Panasonic SVHS equipment with Hi-Fi stereo sound. It was done when railfan video shooting was still in relative infancy and the B&M was undergoing massive changes under the new Guilford management. The footage here on Volume 1 was shot in numerous locations from Fitchburg, MA westward. Pooled B&M, D&H and MEC power abound as do meets with other trains and aging locomotives pushing hard at the rear of heavy tonnage trains. There is no captioning as all data was originally released on paper lists that denoted when and where. Volume 2 is the B&M's Connecticut River Route. Boost the volume while watching!!

Hard to believe B&M ran trains large enough to have 8 loco consists. Nice video.

That was nice. My grandfather, my father retired from the B&M. I started with the B&M went through the Tim Mellon destruction and went to the commuter rail.

Very fascinating and awesome video. It's nice to see the action just before Guilford had a chance to totally destroy the B&M, D&H, and MEC. I remember seeing the D&H Alcos going to and from Lawrence, MA yard just about this time. Then the strike happened and that was the end of the railroads as we knew them.

Thank you for posting this. I had relatives who worked on the B&M long before this, but now I am into model railroading and this has given me some ideas. Lots of fascinating rolling stock and especially motive power here.

Thanks for posting. Reminds me how lucky I was to see these trains when I first started railfanning as a child. Just seeing all of the old BAR and MEC freight cars brings back memories not to mention all of the pre-guilford engines.

Yep, we moved a BigBoy out of Bellows Falls, VT without anywhere near the hype of what's going on in CA.

Great compilation! I just wish it went farther west, out to Mechanicville NY, Mohawk Yard and Rotterdam Junction.

Wow awesome compilation! I can only imagine how much work went into this. I had never heard of the Boston and Maine until I saw a couple of their hoppers down here in Kansas City Southern Knoche yard in Kansas City. One and Sub for the hard work!

What a great video! All the places I always wanted to see when I lived out there in the 70s but had no way to get to. And I really appreciated you captioning the scenes with the locations. That really helped.

Still stupid how Guilford got rid of all the old B&M GP38 and GP40-2s which were newer the Conrail GP40s they ended up with.

Hopefully these videos will give PanAm Southern an indicator as to how far back they need to trim the trees and brush along the main line.
