  • This is a preview from Railfanning The Delaware & Hudson Volume 1 by Paul Cooledge.
To order this DVD or for more information, please visit:
    www.johnpmedia.com
    DVD summary below:
With the fall of the major anthracite roads and their inclusion into Conrail in 1976, railfans began to focus their attention on capturing the operations of the Delaware & Hudson, as many believed the D&H's future as an independent company was becoming increasingly uncertain. The events that followed the acquisition of the D&H by Guilford Transportation just a few years after these films were taken would result in the demise of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad as many once knew it.
In Volume 1, we join Paul Cooledge and friends as they railfan the Delaware & Hudson on the Susquehanna and Penn divisions and on the Conrail Southern Tier Line from March 1979 to October 1981.
Locations include Binghamton to Mechanicville Yard on the Susquehanna division, Nineveh to Ararat including footage of detours over Jefferson Junction at Lanesboro on the Penn division and Binghamton to as far west as Portage, NY on the Conrail Southern Tier Line.
Highlights include interchange with the Boston & Maine at Mechanicville Yard, NY; Starucca Viaduct; Starucca Creek Trestle; Harpursville trestle and more.

The very beginning of the video shows the Bucks Farm trestle that crossed Buck's Falls just outside of Lanesboro. I was a Boy Scout in 1972 and we camped up on the hillside next to the trestle in all kinds of weather. One winter night the train came across the trestle really slow and the crew threw lit flares down off the bridge to entertain us, I'll never forget that. I took my son back there last year only to find the trestle was removed and sold for scrap in the early 1980s, but there is a nice trail up to the former track level and some nice display plaques showing the bridge. I was sad to see it go, so many memories of camping there. I was pretty thrilled to see this video with the train right on the trestle just like I remembered it.

I could never imagine footage from the 1970s looking AND sounding this AMAZING! We are blessed to have engines like 5017 on the D&U, and 7303 and 7304 to still sear that beautiful lighting stripe livery!

Wish Guilford kept the paint from their original railroads, it’d be incredible to see nowadays considering what a lot of railroads have for their normal paint scheme

Im learning more & more about D&H up there from my gf who's from the Southern Tier on the ex ERIE/Lackawanna/EL line in Elmira. D&H had very nice looking engines, esp the LIGHTNING STRIPE look of the Blue & Silver with the Shield. Great video indeed.

Sweet! Some great shots. Love the Starrucca Viaduct - what a marvel. D&H used to stop in Wilkes-Barre at the LV depot at one time - a venerable railroad.

The opening shot on the steel trestle, is that the one that was down near Starrucca? Great video footage, My family first lived in Thompson, then relocated to Lanesboro, PA, we lived right on the D&H mainline in Thompson, then overlooking the Erie at Lanesboro and less than a mile from the viaduct.

Nice vids. Maybe I'm dumb but the narration about how trains were handled with the closure of Tunnel doesn't make sense to me - I think northbound and southbound get used incorrectly, unless a train from Binghamton to Scranton was called a northbound.
