When this show aired, my uncle was serving his second tour of Vietnam in the USMC as a "Gunny". He was one of the lucky ones to make it home. Many men he trained and met while "in country" came back in body bags. Others suffered wounds of the body and spirit. God Bless All Who Served...
What I always loved so much about Gomer was that, sure, he was a fictional character, but his goodness and decency had to come from somewhere; nobody's that good an actor. Jim Nabors must have been one helluva good man. Yep, with a voice from God.
@@Jared-xf5xl Yes. Look it up. Wikipedia. It is common knowledge now but back then, Nabors and Rock Hudson, Tab Hunter, Farley Granger and so many other celebrities had to be closeted.

Hippie girl Leigh French was "Goldie O'Keeefe" on many episodes of "The Smothers Brothers" in her segments "Share a Little Tea with Goldie." (Goldie, Keif, and Tea all slang for "marijuana"). Christopher Ross, on guitar died in 1970. The middle guy is Rob Reiner; everyone knows his story.
I grew up watching Gomer Pyle and I must say Jim Nabors could really sing.Jim Nabors and Anson Williams are the only two actors that really sing. Both have gifted voice. Rest In Peace Jim Nabors.
Jim Nabors said himself in an interview about the show that he and Frank Sutton were marching in formation with real Marines on the opening, many of whom were sent off to fight and die in Vietnam. I was never clear on what message they were trying to send with this scene. Were they trying to make militarism "Hippy Friendly" or the other way around? This was the closest the show ever came to acknowledging the plight of our military at the time. Maybe the point they were trying to stress was to blame the system and the hole it dug itself, not to blame all the young, and mostly underprivileged lives that were wasted on its missteps. Wars are waged at the expense of the people who give the most and receive the least.
Hollywood has a long history of making war propaganda film and TV shows. This was more of the same, really. Just look at how many light hearted, military-themed comedy shows were going on in the 60s.

Loved watching Gomer Pyle USMC always a treat when he sang 👍💚 Gomer is one of the sweetest person around 😊 hey that hippy with the mushroom hair looks like Rob (meathead) Reiner from All in the Family 🤔
This is probably the closest to Vietnam as the show could get. It made no direct reference to the war at all. Could you imagine if this were to have happened today, that is the Vietnam war. How would it have played out if it were now, instead of then? The irony is this is a peaceful scene in a television series starring an actor who represented an individual who was far off in another country risking his very life for a cause! It divided the entire nation, and the irony of this is it's still the same today. The country is still pretty much divided. I think war is like life it's self. It is way too complicated to understand for the human mind. You do not know anything about it, until you have participated in it. Funny, but war is too complicated for mankind, but not an individual man.
Gomer had a beautiful voice and was well like I like him in andy griffin show and Gomer U.S.M.C he was well like in everybody home back in the 60,s I hope he RIP MY FRIEND GOD BLESS WE WILL MISS YOU
Yep!!! Look up Jim Nabors songs here on youtube. Listen to a few of them...It will blow your mind!! This guy does everything--even opera!! He has a huge baritone voice.
Those were the days my friend I thought they would never end! I grew up in the 60's thank you lord. I was a hippie myself but no one believes me. Make love not war!
This was actually Rob Reiner's SECOND Gomer Pyle appearance. He was in a previous episode were he played a random character on the street when Gomer and Sarg were trying to get new recruits. He was actually more clean cut in that one...
The closest the show came to dealing with Vietnam. A Marine singing the most antiwar verse of an antiwar song. And damn, Jim Nabors could sing. RIP.
It was fairly bold for a sitcom that wasn't known for being particularly bold.

Rob Reiner and Leigh French as hippies in this mind blowing "Flower Power" episode of Gomer Pyle!
Rob Reiner, Leigh French - both were writers on the Smothers Brothers show.
