Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina. You can watch in the player above.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

Def: I object, your Honor
Judge: On what grounds?
Def: On the grounds that we have no defense but we have to make it look like we're doing an amazing job so we don't have to go through this all over again.
Nail it !!!
Lol, right
In addition to all the safety measures uber and lyft have, there should be a code word that's auto-generated to the driver and rider. The driver should have to know the word before the rider gets in.
Assuming people are smart enough to figure that out
That would be an awesome solution! Def bring that up to them! May save more lives
They do have that for Uber it's an actual code that the passenger have to provide and put in before he could drive off
When ppl are drunk, they don’t give a heck about code. The focus should be on intoxication not Uber.
Before getting into the car, she tried to get into another car which drove off. The discussion shouldn’t be on the ride sharing services but on one’s conducts during intoxication.
I wonder if the defendant is angry that his handwriting is being trolled.
Witness has 40 years of experience and is like, you know how you learn to write in school? He didn’t do any of that so this is really easy. LOL
This case is so strange did this defendant snap? How did he think or believe he was going to be found innocent? And his girlfriend omg she must have been in shock with a baby in the house...omg...ladies do not let men stay overnight do not take Uber Rides. Regular Taxi's are a safer bet. Try to buddy up.
Uber or lyft are very safe. Just make sure to check the make and licence plate of the car before riding. You can also ask the driver to confirm the name of the passenger or request a pin number from uber. Some people are just distracted or drunk and forget about basic safety procedures.
@Bella, yes your right about going in two's. Maria the ex was a great witness. The poor girl must have been beyond scared seeing all the blood and cleaning supplies. 😫
Taxis, Uber and Lyft are all very safe. There are isolated exceptions: look up John Worboys for an example. In the UK we have different classes of taxi; a minicab has to be pre-booked. You can't hail one like you can a taxi, and it's common for unlicensed minicabs to hang around clubs and bars.
Uber is safe. Requesting an Uber then getting in the first car you see pull up because you are impaired isn’t safe.
I'm beginning to think the gf knew. No one lives in a house with blood plus rides around in a bloody car and is 100% innocent. She could have went to her mother's if she was scared but asked him to stay ? 🤔
1:07:07 The lawyer his making Rowland write 1000 times, "Next time, burn the car".
Lol! But you know what's crazy I actually thought about that I'm thinking this guy DEF should have was burned the car fr!
🤣😂💀
There won't be a "next time "!🤣🤣👍🏾🤨
This defendant is toast my opinion
He’s done. ✅
He looks totally different from the mugshot I bet mama is putting money in his books
Just because he used dollar general bags doesn't mean that's where he got the cleaning products!!!!! That's so dumb
Is it typical for a court procedure to leave opened evidence bags in the court room? It seems as though there is a risk of contamination or alteration of evidence that has been opened and is not secured afterwards.
Yes
Evidence has already been processed 🤗
His only defense is the lack of his DNA on the victim.
@Debra Charles
Not true. Show us where you got that from?
Idk why nobody has talked about dna since the opening statements. They spent three hours opening bloody evidence bags though.
If people stopped breaking the law this RUclips channel wouldn’t have any content
No doubt there won’t ever be any shortage of content.
If people stopped breaking the law this channel will have enough content coming from folks awaiting trial.
They should give him Nate's useless notes here to compare handwriting!
His girl friend bought the products the defendant took and used them from her house. Her DNA was on the bottles/ containers
Did you notice she was getting a little snappy at the state attorney's questions?
Ok did anyone notice that when she was asked if the defendant was in the court room to point where he was sitting? He actually raised his hand up at her. I didn't think they could do that. It made me feel like he was trying to get a message across to her to shut up. My opinion
@@bevdowdy9483
I thought she got sassy with the defenses questions 🤔
@@NG-cj4vx I thought it was the state attorney's she was doing it to I'll have to go back and watch again

Lol
There are going to be so many new cases coming out 💖💖💖💖💖💖. I am waiting
One of the most fascinating is the Murdaugh double homicide that just occurred in South Carolina-(where this trial is). Mind blowing background to this case.
Can you name some? I'd like to watch for them

I thought Marie stated she bought the items. 🤔 This was why her fingerprints were on the items ( bottles etc...)
She did state that, that's why they had no video of Nathaniel buying any cleaning supplies. She had all cleaning supplies in her house.
Yes they were purchased by Marie but Rowland took what ever he wanted it seems.
Ok I'm going to apologize now for what I'm going to say about Mr Jameson I've had one of those days but does he look like captain kangaroo? I do apologize I even put my glasses on still the same. Have a great weekend
You nailed it! THAT’S who he looks like! It was driving me nuts trying to figure out where I’d seen that “hair style” before. Bless him, he’s obviously a smart man but nobody wants to be remembered as looking like Captain Kangaroo.
@@sweetpeas8206 😆
Oh he sure does
I just posted the same comment. We must all be old. How many people just googled who that even is lol
@@gabis2982 yes ma'am I will be 62 this year. At least we didn't see Mr green jeans 😊
I missed something. Can someone please explain the letter to me.
to me as well, im lost now
whats up with the handwriting, what we trying to see with this?
He made a murder list that the police found
I was wondering what that was all about. Did I miss something explaining where the list was found?
Where can I read about this. Was it brought up in the trial yet? I’m behind trying to catch up.

Yeah I thought I missed something so ty for the info 😊👍🏻
where was she going with this? yikes.
Yo is the trace examiner on something? Or does he just not like the prosecutor? Literally every time he looks at her he has the most concerned face on. But then when he talks his face goes back to normal lmao
Ahhhh, so THAT’S what he’s been writing down in court; a new “kill list”. He believes, like most psych’s, that he won’t be convicted and this is a “new and better” kill list. He’s like, “I made so many mistakes; won’t make these same mistakes next time.”
Omg! ❤️ thank you that was my exact thought/statement!
If he doesn't speak he's guilty. Someone who doesn't have anything to hide speaks up
They found DNA under her nails that wasn’t his, but the crime scene is his car. Very confusing to me.
There was probably someone else in the car ...
That is confusing
Ever been in a club/bar/etc & a friend or such came up behind you, scratched you on your head, neck or back? The DNA could’ve come from a # of people inside the bar she came in contact with. And remember, Rowland was apparently covered head to toe in clothing, including gloves, which is very possibly why he didn’t have any scratches on him (mainly face, arms & hands his defense is trying to focus on).
We all walk around every day covered in other peoples DNA-our kids, partners, coworkers, friends, even people we spent little time around. It could have come from anywhere & everywhere.
@@maryb6672 Exactly. Just because she had DNA under her nails doesn’t mean *that particular* DNA came from her assailant & only her assailant. So to say he didn’t murder her & is 100% innocent of all charges BECAUSE he didn’t have scratches & his DNA wasn’t anywhere on her (like his attorneys are contending) is ridiculously bonkers!! I know they gotta attempt to try but seriously…. 🙄
Took bad the hand writing expert, that lets be honest is more than an expert more so the inventor with as long as he has been doing it (lol) , can’t just go gank the tablet he is writing up a storm on currently! Lol
Nat must not be getting a lor is sleep at night. He seems a little tired. 🤣
Ďont know anything about this case...is he dangerous? Police sticking close by made me wonder
Although he's charged with murder he's been allowed to get up and talk to people in the gallery during breaks.
He did run once before… an abundance of caution, I suppose.,
When they showed her crime scene photos those two cops both looked at him with disgust
He is currently on remand in jail so he has to be brought to court by police.
I’ve seen many court trials and almost always the defendant is seated in proximity of the court officers.
wow that guy has scary eyes the paint guy, Michael Muskell , why doesnt that monster wear his mask over his nose ?
Because, he's a narcissist! He doesn't follow rules, thinks everyone else has too though.
What is the alleged motive for the killer?
Opportunity
@Sammy all behavior has a reason. Every human, every animal behaves for a reason. Either to get away from something or to get something. Behavior/Learning theory 101. Not being disrespectful here. It's a basic scientific fact.
Here’s what I think so far. I don’t think he went to 5 Points intending to kidnap someone. I mean how likely is it that u pull up, park & a random female mistakenly gets in ur car? And on a street that busy, he wasn’t going to be able to drag someone in his car. Instead, I think he acted impulsively when she got in-most likely w/the intent of robbery , but possibly sexual assault. We know he got a PIN # for her debit (though it might have been wrong). I think he pulled away thinking he’d quickly force her to withdraw $ from ATM. But rather than meekly obeying, she began fighting, trying to kick the glass out etc & he freaked out. Either out of panic or anger, he began stabbing. If he stayed in the drivers seat, turned around, stabbing & wore the leather jacket w/scratches & blood, it would have been difficult for her to scratch him. I could be 100% incorrect. But that’s what makes the most sense to me, so far at least.
@@maryb6672 they said he circled the bar about 5 times, then pulled into a spot. Was he just looking for a parking spot u think or a victim. I think a victim to rob since that’s a hot spot for young folks to party. And on another thread he had been involved in pawning and selling a kidnapped victims’ goods as well. So I think he was stalking.
@@sashaquetta Could have been either-looking for place to park & jumped at the opportunity to rob her when she got in. Or he went looking for someone to rob. After doing some research into his history, I think I was correct when I said his intent had been to rob someone. But he didn’t plan on her non cooperation. He chose his path.
