    When can an African Woman divorce her husband - is a question with some shocking answers for any women fighting for liberation of their sex. We hit the streets of Lagos, Nigeria to ask African women when is would be acceptable to divorce their husband:
    "Never! She should not divorce at any cost!" says one woman. "Divorce is not the solution to any marital problem."
    "Only when the husband is really beating the wife, not when she catches him with another lady.... because every man does it."
    Adeola explains how infidelity is accepted amongst women in Nigeria - our Naija Gist today follows another story we did - "Are Nigerian's Faithful" - where all women explained that men are not faithful but they could do nothing about it. You can watch the video here:
    • Are Nigerians Faithful?
    And most of the Nigerian women we ask explain how it is not acceptable to divorce their husband. The reasons are plentiful but mostly involve religion, wedding vows and also the fact that often children are involved.
    "I do not think a woman should divorce her husband," says one woman defiantly. "Because the bible is against it."
    "Never... if he is beating her, she can just stay away for a while, until they get the cause of the beatings sorted."
    The big question is whether this should be an acceptable state of affairs for an African woman when their counterparts in many other parts of the world are able to sue for divorce. Many advocates of Feminism see many challenges in Africa where women are still regarded as subordinate to men in family, business and social settings.
    Stay tuned - we will be asking the men shortly - when is it acceptable to divorce your African woman... to compare women's rights in Africa with the mens...

      No, in this interview, they mention their children. divorce hurt children more than the adults.

    When he is physically and mentally abusive and marries another woman because she cannot have a baby boy. My mom left this situation in the early 80s, best decision of her life. This made us, my Mother's daughters demand better for ourselves in our marriages. Thanks Mom !!!

    i dont understand why we women sacrifice so much. So you are not allowed to be happy? You just have to accept it? Why would you stand by a cheating and beating husband? So God put you on this earth to suffer like that? So when your husband dies you still will be sad and miserable while he lived his life in full force? There are so much men on this earth why settle for someone who doesn't care? And then you wanna play the blame game yeah but the children... So when your man cheats you gonna resent your children later? You are going to blame it on them? What do you expect of your children later in return? Its not fair. I feel bad for these women. Sacrificing themselves for no reason. This has nothing to do with religion. Self worth is the key here! You are more than the poor treatment your husband is giving you. Life is to short to be sacrificing yourself like this. Honestly I come from a divorced household and I cant be happier. At least my parents both have a chance to live their lives in piece and they both can be happy now. Instead of resenting each other later. Sometimes I feel like Africa is going backwards instead of going forwards. Don't let a mistake dictate your life. A beating and cheating husband is not love and that's not the way God intended for marriage to be. Stop sacrificing for men. Live your life for you. F what your family and friends say because when things go left you will be left with the mess and bs. When they die you will still be here! Xoxo from woman that escaped an abusive relationship. Stop sacrificing and start living!

    The day any man beats you, you need to leave because it always starts with beating and that can result in him killing you. I beg RUN far away from an abusive man. A husband is there to compliment your life not complicate or complete it.
    Everybody is so quick to quote the bible, but the husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church. Love will not cheat on you and beat you. There needs to be wisdom/sense used in quoting the bible. I'm saddened and shocked by the responses.

    WOW!!!! These women would rather remain a victim and become a statistic rather than save their own lives. And please don't use the children as an excuse. That would be one of my main reasons for leaving. I think some women just want to be able to say they are married even though they are living in pure hell... I'll live life on my on before I allow a man to treat me like garbage.

    Its sad to see these women saying that they will accept if and when their husbands cheat or abuse them; as a nation we will cease to produce strong and inspirational women if they continue to allow this in their marriages all in the name of religion.

    • @bungshel

      Religion has nothing to do with ignorance. Leave the bible out of this cause if a man is beating on you and cheating on you all the time then its time to go (HIV/ AIDS is no joke). I you have use all resources that you have at your disposal and the man continues to do so then you have all right to leave but to just sit in a marriage where the man continue to abuse you is not good for you or the children.

      so you need to read a book.

      Kojo Afoo no you "so dumb" because your english is horrible LOL.
      DO YOU HAVE MD BEHIND YOUR NAME? i doubt it. I dont care where you lived...and no we didnt just work in the hospital but in the community. so shut up.learn some english and get a medical degree and some education..i see patients you dont!
      keep being a troll on the internet..i love to waste time talking to ignorant, illiterate men like YOU!
      have any statistics to prove me wrong? you dont! cos im right!so save your time ! like i said! highest hiv rates before usa and brasil

      lol..what is your business?? selling rotten fish in a market place? the only bitch or slave is your poor woman..a self employed person with no medical experience cant tell me shit
      learning problems like your can be another reason why the hiv/aids is so rampant there.
      so where did YOU go to medical school? ill wait! for your "expert opinion" LOL!
      KEEP TROLLIIN

    • @selahmami
      @selahmami 10 лет назад

      yawn.....
      everyone knows africa as a country mainly the west and south have the highest hiv/aids rates in the world. you have internet look it up. I WORKED THERE IN MEDICAL CARE.
      YOU DIDNT...matter of fact you can clearly google me and see where i received my medical education.
      learn english. and your lame jokes and calling women bitches becos you have no experience in wha tyou are talking about.
      clearly you are the bitch not me. HOW many patients have you taken care of ? im licensed are you?

      www.unicef.org/esaro/5482_HIV_AIDS.html
      read if you can in english.
      keep trolling...keep bitching away...while we continue to distribute azt and retrovirals in your country because a main cause of hiv in africa is due to unprotected sex among migrant men who travel and then bring back the disease to their unsuspecting wives. this is the main culprit in africa. for nearly every 10 patients i evaluated atleast 4 out of 10 had the diagnosis. This was not in a hospital either.
      so again where did you get your medical education? You can view my stats online. google me and my medical education will come up.
      thanks!!!!

  • @unique4902
    @unique4902 10 лет назад +6

    Its all about our culture and religious views. no family or marriage is perfect. for instance a man could be unfaithful with his mind. Thinking it is just as bad as doing. A man could also be verbally abusive he doesn't necessarily have to raise his hand. Would you leave your husband? why marry him make promises to him before God and then Give up? We don't like broken homes. broken families raising broken children... commitment,united,family forgiveness. faith . for better or for worse i'll love my husband unconditionally. people forget that a wise woman wouldn't settle for less to begin with... this is why freely dating without a center goal is not allowed in an African household. parents advise their kids to bring forth possible life long partners not just anyone

  • @akowadaniel

    I pray no one have such experience, because it is easier to say i cannot or i will not divorce him but takes more grace beyond moral maturity to stay in the marriage when your spouse hates you. Oh Lord have mercy, humanly speaking it is not easy, vows or no vows, it takes God's grace. Stay blessed.

  • @BentleeW
    @BentleeW 11 лет назад +2

    If a man cheated on me the relationship whether dating or married would be over because he broke his vows. If a man hit me then I would call back up and it would be fight. I don't play that hitting women stuff and the relationship would be over.
    If I had children then the divorce may affect them but if they saw my husband cheating on me or hitting me the affect on them would be a lot worse.

    I'm a Nigerian woman, and I dare any man to cheat or raise his hand in my direction. He'll wish for death by the time I'm done with him. The fact that this has become a societal norm is ridiculous and absolutely primitive. For all the women in the video using the bible as the basis for their illogical faith, I suppose they forgot the part where it says that one shall not comitte adultery or the part where it says to respect your wife. I must have the wrong definition for repect then.

    Adeola, I had to laugh at your reaction to the infuriating, depressing opinions of the woman on the street, when they said that they would stay even though their husband is a wife beater and a cheat. I think it emboldens the men to behave that way, when they get tempted to do those things, if they know that the wife will take it. I thank God for the Nigerian Barrister Emeka. He's fighting these domestic problems in court for the women's sake.

    Oh hell no! Not in this lifetime! Women should never ever accept abuse. What if the woman was the abuser and cheater? Would a Nigerian man stay or divorce his wife?
    Women need to value themselves more! And you would be teaching your sons and daughters that abuse is acceptable when you stay in the marriage. The cycle will continue with your children if you stay in a dysfunctional marriage.

    I do not want to divorce my husband in the future (neither do most woman). But in the case of beatings and adultery, is it not right. The women that are saying under no circumstance should they divorce are just being idiotic, I am sure they have never been beaten to a pulp or been cheated on constantly, if they had they would change their tune. I am not married, but hope to be one day but I do not plan on being my future husbands punchbag nor being constantly cheated on.

    Change the frames of mind. Take men off of that nonsensical pedestal and actually function in partnership mode. People aren't ready to adjust their mentalities and until that happens..Nigeria will continue to see more of the same. You can't ask for change and use the same methods you've been using.

    Also, having two parents around doesn't necessarily mean the child will have a worry free life either (in fact the child of parents who fight a lot might be more worried that his/her parents might kill each other than that from a single parent family where there usually is more peace) so I think that parenting is more important than making sure the two parents are around.

    well,i don't believe in divorce either.Every problem has a solution if we can trace the root.So ask yourself,was he like this when i married him?if the answer is no,then something must have changed him.Remember,in any divorce,it is the children that suffers.I believe 99.9% of marital problems can be solved without divorce.PLEASE STOP PREACHING DIVORCE!!!

    agreed.. tolerating these behaviors leaves no room whatsoever for the man to change cuz he knows that he can keep doing all the things he's doing and the wife will always be there .. I HATE DIVORCE with all my heart .. especially since these days people get divorced for the stupidest reasons but i'll rather leave and pray for him to change and b separated than take the blow on my selfworth/esteem by staying and hoping for things to get better.. if things don't change tho, life goes on!

    It is our culture. When you got married you made a VOW before God and man that you will remain faithful to that person and stick with them for better for worse. A VOW or an oath is something we Africans don't play with, family and our kids is another, our reputation and our dignity is yet another.... That is why our marriages work, that is why our families last. That is why we can trace our lineage back to generations. Our men may fall a few but MOST of our married men are NOT promiscuous, just a few are. They eventually might return to their senses, but our women do stand by their men. Go stronger sons and daughters of Africa, never forget your roots, never forget the culture that made you who you are. Nations and countries, huge societies and large communities might and have thrown their morals and dignity away, they will and have tried to lure you into their path but do not give way to their seduction because you are true. Stay strong and show them how it's done, the generations after them will be confused because will not know the worth of life or what a deep culture means; they will look up to you to show them the way. Be strong mama Africa, your virtues and values and principles are true. . .

      A man who cheats once will cheat again. Not all women will tell you that their husbands beats and cheats on them, so your assumption may be further off than you think. If a woman did the same she'd get called a billion names, not just by her husband but by the rest of society as well. Sometimes you have to question culture if it isn't right. What's next, will you sit there and watch him rape your daughter simply because it's "part of a culture?"

  • @melindasummers7591
    @melindasummers7591 7 лет назад +3

    This makes me so sad. It is horrible for children to watch daddy beat mommy. Children repeat what they see and this is how you end up with multi generational abuse issues. It is not better to stay with the children and just continue to get beat. You are doing grave damage to the next generation in teaching them that beating is normal and ok. It isn't.

    This video is filled with ignorant women. A man should not hit his wife, we are brought to the word to protect our we once lived in a world where women saw their men as conquerors, providers, heroes . A woman should not stick by a man who beats her. If the same man saw his mother or sister being beaten will he accept it? I feel women use religion such as Chrisitainity to save themselves mentally. Actions like this are what ruin our race, being a nigerian I have to say the people are nieve we have our own religion as a black race in which our ansestors grew to know before alot of other religions came forth.

      And yet our ancestors never practiced divorce! It's cultural not religious.

    • @dancenijas
      @dancenijas 10 лет назад

      Emmanuel Adebiyi Just trying to understand your last sentence. If our ancestors had their own religion then why didn't they divorce? Culture is what shapes a society's translation of religion. The same reason why America calls itself a Christian nation and yet very lax in principle. You made a great point then turned around to refute it.

    • @emmanueladebiyi9386
      @emmanueladebiyi9386 10 лет назад

      dancenijas Actually when i think divorce is of both culture and religion . the Code of Hammurabi, the oldest known written compilation of laws. Believed to have been recorded around the year 1760 B.C. in Babylon it then moved onto Acient history,Greco-Roman History, Medieval Period Henry the VIII, Divorce in England and American Divorce. These laws have been embedded into both religion and laws and cultures which has change society as a whole.
      Religion is a set of ethics that follows the message of god or a spiritual head and its biblical teaching which isn't referenced to fact. Religion is an identity of people believing and following practices which control their way of thinking and living of live. Whereas culture is something that is common to all people belonging to a nation or a state irrespective of their language or community
      Like myself i'm cultural and a moralist but not religious. I don't want to be controled.
      In reference to America, i'm not American but i can tell you majority of Americans (73%) identify themselves as Christians and about 20% have no religious affiliation so that is correct, but we are not talking about America are we .As a nation our religion was tanished after Slavery and Colonialism phenomena be the root causes of Nigeria’s underdevelopment today.

    • @dancenijas
      @dancenijas 10 лет назад

      Emmanuel Adebiyi Lol why are you pulling up loong encyclopedia-type definitions that have no correlation? Please what exactly are you trying to say? As I said before, your last sentence refutes your entire argument. If the African religion was "tarnished after slavery and colonialism"(as in Christianity was largely adopted right?), then what was it originally, and how has Christianity changed it in terms of divorce?

      In Nigeria each tribe believed in their own gods and prayed to them for specific things
      Shango- God of thunder
      Bumba- God of vomit
      Elegua - God of beginnings and opportunities
      Obatala- Creator of humans
      I could go on….
      In terms of divorce on christians i won't answer as this will cause contrversy on the net for my own opinion and its a touchy subject

    Batta Box is correct. Children solidify a marriage, because culturally marriage is between two lineages and not individuals. So cultural grounds for divorce could be impotence, lack of procreation, financial hardship, etc. These can also be reasons why infidelity may occur versus ending a marriage. Moreover, Westernization, urbanizationand Christian indoctrination adds an additional strain to marriages. It is less prominent among those who practice Islam & more traditional spiritual systems.

    Excuse me but where are the men's answers to this question? What do the women say when asked "when is it okay for a man to divorce a woman". This is what is called an Experimenter's Bias; where you ask a question or an audience expecting a certain answer and because of this expectation you skew the results.

Yes people cheat, but if it's before marriage, that is a different story. There is nothing in the Bible that says that a woman should stay if she is being abused or a man is committing adultery, NOTHING!!

    The president is Ibo and if he speaks in his own language, more than half of Nigeria won't understand what he's saying bcos there are so many different languages. If the governors of all the 36 states come together, how are they going to communicate? the easiest and most effective way to be able to understand each other is to learn a single language-English. Also, their English won't be perfect bcos of their own language and accent mixed with it. Even the English can't speak English perfectly.

    I actually think divorce should only be an option in extreme cases of domestic violence or in issues of repeated abuse. It is not right for a man to beat his wife, but I believe some people loose it sometimes, but there are other better solutions, even women sometimes get violent sometimes. Divorce should only be considered in extreme cases. Don't forget, for better or worse.
