I came across a video on RUclips lately by The Salon Life a professional nail technician. She says that skin is actually the proximal nail fold (living skin) and the reason it splits and cracks is because it’s stuck to the nail bed and as the nail grows it pulls and rips the skin. The cuticle is the dead skin that’s stuck under the proximal nail fold. Her recommendation is to rub in jojoba oil - just a drop for both hands - into the nails after each hand washing and use Kerasal every night and using an orange stick gently nudge the skin back every couple of days. I had terrible ‘hangnails’ and thick dry proximal nail fold and can say this absolutely works…..my nails and skin around them are already so much better after only a week.

Yes, I've come across her as well. It was her video on warm oil for brittle nails. I also like Nail Career Education though she doesn't do as much natural nail care. She recently did a natural manicure video on a male client and discussed cuticles and how to safely remove hangnails.

I have them at my bathroom sinks and every time I wash my hands I rub a small amount into my cuticles and hands. I’m going to look through your videos and see if you have one about dish washing detergent. I think that is what dries my cuticles out so much. I used to experience a ton of hang nails but since I’ve been diagnosed with skin allergies I don’t really get them anymore. The only time they show up now is after I accidentally use a product with an allergen in it. Hang nails are not typically associated with a symptom of skin allergies, but it does tend to be one of the symptoms for me.
