In today's video we look at the history of the often-overlooked sequel to the classic Simpsons Arcade Game from Konami. In 2009, EA would publish a now delisted title named The Simpsons Arcade for IOS. Let's look back at this forgotten chapter in history.

There was a Simpsons Arcade machine at a local department store when i was a kid. My mom once made the questionable decision to leave me with a dude who legit looked like Comic Book Guy who was playing the game while she shopped. He had a giant jug of quarters that he shared with me and we made it to the end of the game together. He was my hero that day.
Beautiful story
The fact that there hasn't been a Homer Vs. George H.W. Bush fist fight as a boss battle in any of these games is such a wasted opportunity.
Final boss being Trump, for whom one would need a "game enhancing" device, like Game Shark to beat.
@@evanscott9473 nah, robo Stephen hawking would have been better
The people that made this game probably never even saw that episode.
Not a fist fight! And not with George H. W. Bush (who was a WW2 pilot who had survived being lost-at-sea at one point). I would like to see a comical trivia game between Homer and President Gerald Ford.
Ya so in other words FanBoys need the source code or something for the more polished ROM hack.
Kid: "I want to play The Simpsons Arcade"
Mom: "You've already got The Simpons Arcade on your phone."
guy in background #900: “you can just download it free and emulate it ya’know?”
Yeah I did, till Apple delisted that and X-Men arcade :(
For real? Playstore, here I come.
wait that was on the phone?
The game industry wants to get RID of "game preservation" unless they can keep directly profiting from it. They like to be able to force people to move on to the next thing and remove old things at will.
After delisting this game, EA focused on The Simpsons Tapped Out and still has
Yes The Simpsons Taped Out is really good 👍

Wow I can't believe today is The Tracey Ullman Show's 35th anniversary. Congratulations to the show that will be forever known as... that show The Simpsons originated from.
I think she's okay with that. I think she still gets a little residuals from the show
@@thecunninlynguist It's something
We are old...
But happy to grew up during the late 20s when Demolition man..The last supper..were just comedy.
Ullman got pocket change from Fox for the Simpsons. She sued for more and lost. Worth noting that she tried to get rid of the shorts as it was her show and the shorts had nothing to do with her.
I grew up watching that show as a kid I still remember the theme song to it to this day.
They really should have gotten a sequel.
If shredders revenge is good that team should do a Simpson game next. BURNS REVENGE!!
If that name is to be used, its theme music could be either the original or an instrumental version of "Señor Burns", the mocking mambo that Tito Puente and his orchestra sang in "Who Shot Mr. Burns?-Part Two".
Boo-erns!
Looking forward to Mr. Burns becoming a Kingdom Hearts boss! 😎
@@jordanhoughton1948 Are you saying "Boo!" or "Burns"? :D
I'm honestly hoping with the return of Scott Pilgrim, the upcoming Cowabunga Collection and Rise of Shredder, that we get an actual viable Simpsons Arcade sequel this time.
You mean Shredder's Revenge?
Shredders revenge. Not rise of shredder
Maybe they'll just rerelease the arcade port for a week again. 🤣
@@bingbongdingdong867 if they sell a remake for switch people will buy it 4 player arcade games are fun or a sequel on switch with 8 characters bart homer lisa Marge then unlocble character Maggie and dlc krusty itchy and scratchy
Recently Simpsons (now owned by Disney) was used to advertise Star Wars and Lisa sing praises about Disney...
The writers and influencers behind the scenes involved during The Simps golden era were different including head writer Conan O’Brian. The show was still trying to prove itself. That made a big difference!
Some of the best original writers were mathematicians iirc. Weird dudes, not bland, formulaic, Hollywood writers.
I feel very lucky to have been a pre-teen/teen/young adult throughout the best years of the Simpsons. Like all parents, my mom initially didn’t want me watching the show because of the subversive hysteria, but not only was a lot of it baseless, it’s proven to have stronger moral ground than shows people claim to remember from their youth. I’ve really appreciated the comprehensive commentary tracks included on the seasonal Simpsons DVDs that have kept me collecting them long past the time I watched them, because even the worst seasons have interesting stories behind their development. I only wish they kept making them, as I don’t trust completely digital media given the ease of removal, as you rightly pointed out (and has been proven with the removal of the Michael Jackson episode Stark Raving Dad, which I do not agree with regardless of the documentary’s veracity or lack thereof). I wish there was a comprehensive collection of the Tracy Ullman era shorts (or even if the Tracy Ullman Show itself; it’s a show I found in syndication that I initially watched for the Simpsons shorts but grew to love on its own). Even if the Simpsons has long been terrible more than it’s been great , no amount of terrible seasons can undo the greatness of the Simpsons at its best (and I personally include the Ullman shorts and seasons 1-2).
My parents had no problem letting me watch the show, but one of my friends wasn't allowed to watch the show and his parents made him watch The Cosby Show instead because it was more wholesome! (This was during that brief period of time when The Simpsons was on Thursday nights rather than Sunday.)
I agree with you about "Stark Raving Dad". There were already rumors about Michael Jackson before that episode even aired. I remember seeing the commercials* for this episode and wondering why they would want MJ to guest star in their show. The kids at school didn't like Michael Jackson anymore by the time this episode came out. The kids at the time would also make fun of the fact that in the episode 10 year old Bart was left alone in his bedroom with a guy who thought he was Michael Jackson.
They really need to just unban that episode, since we now know that Simpsons creator Matt Groening had teenage girls massaging his feet on Jeffrey Epstein's jet. (Or they should ban every Simpsons episode except for "A Star is Burns", the crossover with The Critic that Groening demanded his name be removed from.)
* I also remember the commercial saying something like "The Simpsons meet a white guy who thinks he's Michael Jackson!" I asked my older brother why they had specified "a white guy" and he explained to me how Michael Jackson had once been a black man.
nah The Simpsons has never been terrible.
@@KasumiKenshirou Ugh never meet ones hero's ..
I guess the life adage is: if you have to vent to relax in life to remove stress, then don't hand others your baggage.
It would be nice if there was less deviancy tied to such wonderful content; but I guess when people abuse others for their own gain its easier to become nicer, emotionally unloaded, and mentally creative.
What a sick world..
Gotta love that adderall.
I think it's funny that you showed footage of Simpsons Road Rage while talking about hit and run. Road Rage was the Simpsons attempt to clone Crazy Taxi, and it got Fox sued by Sega. It was a pretty big deal, since it reminded people that certain game mechanics were copyrighted. Game companies just love to stifle the creativity of their competitors.
That's silly, since Crazy Taxi itself is a clone of Courier Crisis.
@@cabbusses Unfortunately, patent law doesn't concern itself with who actually invented something, it only enforces who has the rights to it. Sega actually patented that arrow above the taxi that told you where to go, and Simpsons Road Rage used a hand pointing a finger towards the destination. The courts deemed it to be patent infringement, and the game got pulled off shelves prematurely. Patenting game mechanics is bad.
@@supertombrother1988 Yet Rockstar Was Fine With Hit & Run Being An Obvious GTA Clone
The animation and quality of the sprites makes this look like a fan project that's not the worst thing ever but lacking polish. As Mr Burns said about Martin Prince's power plant design despite its ability to generate real power, "but where's the heart?"
"... ughh, so cold & sterile...." 🤣 👍
The funny part is that Mr.Burns who said it. XD
I always thought he said "Where's the hot?"
Black people.
That name again is Mister Plow!!
The issue with the Simpson is that they got rid of too many well received characters from the past in place of throwing loads of celebrity cameos every episode
Before they're actually used to be a story now it's just gimmick
You can tell when the show started to be more establishment in how it treated celebrities. For the early times the show used celebrities well. If the celebrity played themselves they were used for a few gags here or there or the celebrity played an original character. While I think that that is still true it is just as common to have a celebrity be the center of an episode with level of reverence the show used to make fun of.
Those characters had their voice actors die in real life or quit working for Fox to pursue a different path in their careers. In Apu's case, he got Ken Pendered (sued out of existence).
A gimmick? You could say the same thing about _South Park_ though.
I stopped watching when they got rid of Gumbly "Graggle" Simpson. That's where American dad took inspiration for the alien character cliche.
Did this require an almost complete history
Yes
Was thinking the same.
Even if the latest seasons and their new shorts that's been released on Disney+ are dump, it's still a great show if you only pay attention to the golden age, especially the fact the show was such a fortune teller.
Loving this channel more and more! Didn’t even know there was a sequel.
I was always surprised at how successful the simpsons arcade was despite the fact that it came out so early in the series lifespan that there was really no material to compile for use in the game. It would have been an infinitely better experience if they actually worked in some clever jokes and memes and stuff from the series into the game instead of another tmnt game with a simpsons skin. It could have been far better. I would have thought the sequel would have been far better. Goes to show!
there is actually one detail in the game that was *supposed* to be canon in the tv series.
marge has several sprites in this game that show that she has rabbit ears, which was supposed to be revealed in the show at some point, but that never happened as far as i know
By Season 2, the show was red hot. Yes the game looks incredibly empty of references from our perspective, but I get why they did it. They should have done a sequel by the late 90s though.
A lot of people blame modern Simpsons unfunniness on poor writing but it's got a lot more to do with the animation looking too clean and sterile, voice cast basically just phoning it in etc.
Amen, good sir
@@Shinmsl nah
The poor writing is the shoddy foundation on which the rest of that sinking house is hastily built and garishly decorated.
@@CaptainRegular although this is a brilliantly crafted reply, I beg to differ. There's a lot of jokes in newer episodes that would probably work in older episodes when they actually gave a shit.
@@CaptainRegular nah it's good writing.
I remember downloading this on my iPhone when it came out expecting it to be the proper arcade game and being SUPER disapointed lol
Married with Children was part of the same FOX TV successes.

"I'm Mr.Plow, that's Mr.Plow, that name again is..."
Oh I always forget that last part
Call Mr Plow, that's my name. That name again is Mr Plow
Top Hat Gaming Man, in a future video, you should definitely review The Simpsons Game!
Huh... It's rare when a Top Hat Gaming Man video shows you something new. A few more of these and I might resubscribe. Good shit.
Man, I love that Krustyland theme so much from the Arcade game.
NGL, I had this Simpsons Arcade mobile and I enjoyed the hell outta it. Definitely wasn’t better then the OG but still liked it
I started watching the Simpsons at 7 years old in 1989, still watching it sort of today. But yeah season 32 was a bit tedious.
The Simpsons visually lost all its life when they standardized its characters appearance and animations. They must've had a meeting and were like "how can we make all our characters the most boring possible versions of themselves". Anyway I won't be testing that game because, like the TV show, I will induce vomiting to get myself out of the room. Tried and was still watching every episode 4 years ago but it was going nowhere fast. I'd rather go to school than watch a new episode.
“Call Mr. Plow, that’s my name; that name again is Mr. Plow!”
There is so much padding in this video. I'm glad for the interest in Simpsons games, but do we really need a history lesson of the show? It's not until halfway through the video before we get to the titled content. Sigh...
Not to mention an irrelevant ramble about the show's quality in recent years at the end!
I like that the original Simpsons arcade game has been re released in stores.
Yes 1up Arcade The Simpsons Arcade game 🕹
It would have been cool if there were online coop. Let's hope there will be a proper updated remaster release of the original arcade or a proper sequel
Playstation did release the original arcade game. I have it on my PS3 and there was an online play option. However, I'm pretty sure that you can no longer find it in the playstation store. I can't remember if I had paid for it or if it was a PS Plus free download. Too bad it wasn't more popular. It will always be one of my favorite games, easily top 5 on my best arcade games list.
Coolest thing about the Simpsons Arcade Game is the Streets of Rage 2 hack which ports the yellow family over to a far superior brawler.
My opinion of the second "arcade" Simpsons game released on mobile in 2009: That happened, and we all let it happen.
Wow I didn't know there was a sequel that whole time I always thought it should since the first arcade was during the first few seasons so not much when it came to memorable characters especially moe don't even look like moe
Ps thank you for making these videos I'm a xelinal soo by time I was around most arcades where irrelevant and ps2 and xboxs where in. With games being 80+ hours nowadays I reverted back to old school and making a series on these old classics from what I studied thanks to arcade one up and you all for teaching me so I can teach others
This one passed me by. Don't remember seeing anything on this one
The animation of the "sprites" is so stiff, much like the modern Simpsons show.
Oh, Simpsons Wrestling...
Kang and Kotos: I'M HUUUUURT!
I played the first game a lot. Did the sketch ever make it off the Tracey Ullman show?
Should have been called "Homer And The Quest For The Forbidden Donut"
10 years in the future
"Top Hat Gaming Man's channel is like modern The Simpsons."
If my channel is not there yet, there are certainly popular RUclipsrs from 15 years ago who are now at this point with there content haha.
Hit and run is a crazy taxi clone, not GTA. I think they even got sued about it
That’s Simpsons Road Rage.
Great video!.. it took me a few years of vacations as a kid in the Arcades of Las Vegas i finally beat this game with tons of quarters.. the most fun arcade beat ‘‘em up of the 90s, and a great childhood memories.
I was 13 when the Arcade game came out. I tried all the characters, but also always played as Homer, imagining having to save my future daughter.
7:40 The Simpsons Game that came out for consoles in the 2000s wasn't popular!? I guess that's one game I haven't really spoken with anyone, as it doesn't really come up, but as you pointed out, it captured the show quite well and it's honestly the funniest game I've ever played. I'm not used to outright laughing at a game, before or since, as I had with that Simpsons game, and it really kept me wondering where it was going to go next.
The best part of the Simpsons was when they took down Cosby.
The cow stampede thing is clearly an homage to another completely unrelated Konami classic multiplayer game that is called Sunset Riders.
I enjoyed the cunning fox executives chittering about and pointing at pie charts. If not a reference to a classic Simpson's gag, worthy of one.
This was actually the very first app game I’ve ever played,I got it when I got my very first phone way back in middle school,I was fully expecting this game to be exactly like the actual Simpsons arcade considering the tittle,I was disappointed it wasn’t but now still best the game!
I remember seeing massive protests in South America (Bolivia I think) to put the Simpsons back on the air when it was taken off the airwaves.
I know that I'm the minority here, but the original Simpsons arcade game is overrated in my opinion. It's ok but there are much better beat-em-ups from that era and before.
Always gonna be that one guy...
I am a huge beat em up fan and I was never into Simpsons either. It's built on the Konami/Turtles engine from what I can tell and the arcade version of it has always played weirdly to me between weird hitboxes and a cheap AI to suck quarters.
I mean, I don't think it would be controversion to say streets of rage 1 and 2 are better than it. Maybe Cadillacs and dinosaurs
@@murilocelebi to be fair, beat em ups come down to preference of license. Most of them play very much alike. I just feel Konami did such a knock out job with The Simpsons license. It was practically perfect. So much charm and character at every turn. It could use more enemy variety but other then that it's excellent.
I would love a proper remake/sequel of the Simpsons Arcade game. I'm glad I didn't know about this one.
I want to try it. You intrigued me. I didn't know about its existence. Oh, boy! It's an iOS exclusive and my mobile phone runs on Android!
I grew up watching The Simpsons and playing the original arcade game. We beat the oriiginal arcade game with 4 players a few times in my childhood and I remember running around kid play centers and restaurants convincing kids or parents to put quarters in it. I had thought for a long time the show had gotten dry, but recently I got a television antennae and started watching broadcast tv for the new episodes premieres with my family and we think the last few seasons are "excellent" as Mr. Burns would say and Sunday nighs have become a Simpson tradition again which I love.
It's a shame iOS emulation isn't much of a thing - that would help game preservation for things like this and WrestleFest, which was at least in the works on the 360 and maybe we'll get an unofficial Goldeneye 007 remake-style release later.
I actually really liked this game. Especially when you play with a controller it’s not bad.
I recently set up to be playable on my stand up arcade cab at home. It’s pretty fun.
The Simpsons arcade game inadvertantly gave us one last laugh if you wanted to download the mod.
At least, the emulators I've been able to find, they're terrible with four player games as such that you automatically got the first player slot, which is the far left character. Luckily for me, the character on the far left in the Ninja Turtles arcade game is Leonardo, but the character on the far left for the original Simpsons is Marge. Hope ya like swinging that vacuum cleaner rather than having a skateboard!
Maybe it was advertent! Maybe this was intended all along to punish modders.
and the moral is ................. beware of anyone who puts out anything just to make money and for no other reason
I hate mobile gaming, but this doesn't look nor appear to play, badly. Homer has an impressive repitoire that shames the OG arcade game, which was always light on technique. This should be brought to consoles with multiplayer support + a zoomed-out camera. With some smoother animation and unlockable characters added, this could actually turn into something, glorious 👍. Too bad Disney owns it all now.... they are soulless. Thanks alot for the video THGM.... love your work.
Really needed a 5 minute retrospective on the franchise
I had no clue this sheight existed... Today was an enlightening day.
I will never understand why they couldn't have made The Simpsons Arcade game for Snes. What a missed opportunity.
There were better Simpson's games on the SNES.

Virtual Bart and Bart's Nightmare are better than a watered down version of the Arcade Game on Super NES.
Trust me. I played the Arcade Game on PC and a hypothetical Super NES port would be terribly bad.
I love the Simpsons
0:53 yes I am aware of this, mobile phone The Simpsons Arcade game 🕹 🎮
The best Simpsons mobile 📱 Phone game is The Simpsons Taped Out
They should really stop this show already
I'm disappointed not seeing stupid Flanders as one of the level bosses
I never enjoyed the Simpsons Arcade game. It was one of those titles that lived on the licence. Had it been a game with generic characters it would have been long forgotten. It's not bad. Just meh. But I always appreciate being in the age group getting to live through the 90s as a kid. Simpsons is one of my all time favourite shows.
You're not wrong. The game is WAY simple. Only real technique is standing by another player till both combine for some weird 2-in-1 gameplay. It only really has it's visuals, audio, & MP gameplay.... the actual gameplay is extremely shallow. I always felt this way since playing it in arcades in the 90s. TMNT is similar, but seems to have greater precision, in it's gameplay.
Homer really wanted the bat.
It's a crime the original was never ported.
I remember getting this on a 2015 3G pre-paid phone.
Same game but the graphics were downgraded to GBA pixelated, with the arcade cabinet as the border.
The touch controls were on the "cabinet" itself, and some features were removed.
I still have this game on an old iPod touch however even though it is installed; it won't work when I try to play it. I understand somewhat if we have something purchased but not downloaded onto our device not being available because it was delisted but it definitely doesn't feel right when you have it installed on your device.
Anyways, the only thing awful about this game in my opinion is that it is not a remake or port of the original. However, on its own merits or if there was no Simpsons Arcade game to compare it to, I'd like to think it would be overall better received.
It's disappointing that it is only 1 player and you can only be Homer but considering this was made by EA, it's a minor miracle that it wasn't anchored down with microtransactions. I miss the days where you can purchase a game and you..actually get all of it, just like that.
There may not be a slew of replay value but everything this game does; in terms of graphics, gameplay, sound and control is very good. As a beat-em up, it's pretty standard fare but as you mentioned, Homer has a respectable amount of attacks beyond just punches, kicks & jumping. The auto scrolling levels are weak compared to the side scrolling ones but I'll give credit for varying up the gameplay.
While it may be unfair to compare since the actual arcade game came out in 1991 and this in 2009, at least this game includes more recognizable characters to both interact with and beat up. The original arcade had you facing well drawn but unknown characters with no history or ties to the show.
If this game came out within the last few years, I can only imagine what EA would have done with it as all their mobile games now are little more than microtransaction gacha apps with broken gameplay and some of the worst, unresponsive controls imaginable.
To call this game awful I think is a reach but this is just my opinion. Your videos are always a delight to watch so thank you for all the awesome content you provide us with.
I got very lucky I guess, I have the game on my original iPad, the first iPad that came out and it still plays and I have it on my iphone 4th gen and it still runs great. I missed out on the Simpsons arcade for my PS3 for purchase so I emulate it on mame but I purchased the iOS version and I can still play it on the iPhone 4 and og iPad.
The Simpsons Arcade 2 should've been called Homer Adventures lol
It's been many years since the game came out so I might be remembering it wrong but I think there was another version made for other phones that had a much more traditional pixel art style, not that it was any better but the game I played definitely looked different.
Big Daddy, how about doing a video on Nickelodeon All Star Brawl. But you can wait until the DLC content comes barreling in. But you can also do a retrospective on the Kart Racers games.
I think the rant at the end about the Simpsons being bad now would have made sense if you made this video 8 years ago. But The Simpsons have pretty famously being going through something of a resurgence the last few years
i got it once on my 2011 iphone 4S, i just barely started it, then all of of sudden its not working and they delisted it, what gives?
The reason it sucks is because Konami didn't make it. Look at how well Konami produced the TMNT games, when they had the license!
I had this on my Ipod Touch. For an early mobile game I thought it was decent but I hadn't heard of the original Simpsons Arcade Game and obviously that is superior.
Part of me wants the Simpsons to go on as long as possible. It’s truly the last lingering thread of my childhood.
But I’m well aware of what’s it become and the decline in quality. I hope when they finally do end it, that they do it on a solid number like 35 or 40 and not 37 or 41 lol
? You didn't like the 138th Episode Spectacular?! 😂
The Konami game...didn't that come out to capitalize on the popularity of the first TMNT Arcade Game, too? The visuals ain't quite there for The Simpsons, but the gameplay is very similar to TMNT, if not completely identical. (TMNT came out in 1989, The Simpsons in 1991, and then Konami dropped X-Men in 1992)
The show? I actually checked out midway through season 7...maybe sooner...it just didn't appeal to me anymore.
I did remember playing and having fun playing the Simpsons arcade game 🕹 it my favorite classic game ever and I am a huge simpsons fan
Had to REsubscribe for some reason , I thought u had retired due to not seeing your videos up for a while . Thought you had passed the touch on to your wife due to this. Just thought I'd let you know incase others have also been unsubbed to the channel by youtube
First time I've ever heard of this
Can honestly say not seen a new episode since the 1st of the HD ones, often put a classic one one didnt know they was still going, loved Hit and Run as a kid but never played a mobile game since buttons disappeared off phones pressing a screen dosnt do it for me
I miss this game won’t let me download on my new device
The only truly bad thing about this game seems to be that it's on mobile. Who cares about only being able to play as Homer, he's the only Simpson who actually fits as a beat-em-up character anyway.
I dunno. It doesn't look too bad.
Hey, Top Hat Gaming Man. How about you do a video on Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game in a future video?
I've got this game on my I pod. It's not the Arcade game but still not a bad game. It's pretty good and fun. Sad they D-listed it.
.I'm one of those that think not only the writing went down but when they are became so on model and so stiff and lifeless a great deal of The Simpsons soul died too. The writing of the show have on the other hand improved quite a bit since those dark years after season 15ish, here in Latin America there was another crippling blow to the show that was when most of the boys actors especially the main family who were truly iconic and had great performers (that made the jokes even better than the originals in my point of view) we're all replaced by cheap imitators, most of us so of that as the end of the show and what went on were just that lifeless corpse dragging on.
Maybe you should cover the South park games that lead a much more dignified trajectory
Oh yeah, I used to okay this all the time on my iPad, I think?
Reagan was awesome
The controls on that Simpsons game are horrible now :-( I mean it was fine for 2007, but I tried to play with my son about 2 years ago and it sucked.
The... The game actually looks quite good. Like, if it weren't a mobile game, I'd play it for sure, and probably really enjoy it! I feel you were a bit overly hard on what looks to be a genuinely well-constructed retro throwback game that can only really be faulted for its choice of platform (and having only one playable character, but honestly, if you're only going to have one playable character, Homer's the one to pick, so that's not even that big a deal!).
Green Bart. Top 3 favorite Simpson episode ever.
It looks pretty good for a 2009 phone game...
Bart: Dad! YOU KILLED ZOMBIE FLANDERS!
Homer: He was a zombie?
Me: 😳.........Dayum Homer....🤭😆😆😆
they really fucced that up, a one player only Beat'em up, even streets of rage was more fun when playing together and it was a great game to play alone.
You're absolutely and totally right it was humans not foxes that worked on the original content that was coming out you know married with children Simpsons but then every once in a while one of them would go out to eat and then a fox would return wearing a suit and now there's nothing but foxes there explain what's happening any better than what I've just suggested
