Oh shit I've already seen this done as a deadlift alternative, but thought it wasn't gonna be that great. What do you think about doing it that way? Or even more out there in a circular motion?
Yeah there’s fun variations of this like turning into more of a spiral if you want to make it more a global spine/core stimulus but keeping it side to wide like this is a more potent oblique stimulus.
Yes, obliques and QL. You can potentially use light weight without the straddle, but eventually if you go heavy enough and/or deep enough, it would be impossible to maintain balance without widening the stance.
Hy alec this is totally out of context am texting here hoping that would reply ,using hack squat and making it a glute biased movement seems dumb right you can't make it glute biased because how high you keep the leg on the platform form the load is still behind your back and line of force is so close to the hip so basically the moment arm of hip is so small compared to the knee so quads will always have to do more work on a hack squat - love to hear your openion
Draw the force vector for the machine (an arrow pointing from the shoulder pads towards the foot plate, parallel with the weight sled) but also draw a force vector for the human on the machine (an arrow pointing from the feet towards the shoulder pads), then break that up into components. Because of friction the force vector for the human and for the machine will not be parallel, and the humans force vector is what you’d want to use to calculate joint torque. The problem isn’t solvable (you’d need a force plate) but this representation should give you a clearer picture of what’s happening.
@alecblenis thanks man i appreciate it I never thought about this or knew this 😂 but I would like to know your opinion about trying to bias glutes on hacksquat ,
This has massively carried over to real world applications

So are you working the obliques and QL in this exercise?
Could you do it without the straddle stance?

Do you have any programs to follow? Paid? Free? Anything?
Yes, I do - two main programs that you can learn more about here and on my IG
