Overhead Straddle Side Bend (plate)
Просмотров 78816 часов назад
This is one of my favorite oblique/QL exercises that works with a very minimalistic gym set-up. It's one of just a handful of oblique exercises that can effectively be done in an alternating fashion, so just one set needed rather than doing a set on each side; this also allows it to work well when paired with an another exercise as a superset.

Bent Over Cable Rotation (with anchor)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.21 день назад
This is a very stable option for training the obliques in the lengthened position with a lengthened bias resistance curve. The weight belt is necessary to stay anchored to the floor when using heavy loads.

Half Kneeling Twist (Lengthened Bias)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 месяца назад
You can set-up the half kneeling twist in a variety of ways, but this angle and leg orientation works very well for getting a lot of load across the obliques in a lengthened position while feeling very stable. Follow me on IG for more: alecblenis Check out my programs: linktr.ee/alecblenis
Overhead Crunch
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 месяца назад
This is one of my favorite variations for training the abs in a fairly lengthened position without the need for specialty equipment. Follow me on IG for more: alecblenis Check out my programs: linktr.ee/alecblenis
Cable Bicycle Crunch
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
This is primarily a hip flexor exercise that also includes a significant contribution from the abs. Follow me on IG for more: alecblenis Check out my programs: linktr.ee/alecblenis
Seated Zercher Good Morning (round back)
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.4 месяца назад
This variation is primarily a lower back exercise but, to a lesser degree, it also works the adductors and glutes. Follow me on IG for more: alecblenis Check out my programs: linktr.ee/alecblenis
Plank Cat Cow
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.4 месяца назад
This is core exercise is a more dynamic version of the classic plank hold, strengthening the abs in a position of anterior & posterior pelvic tilt instead of just neutral. Follow me on IG for more: alecblenis Check out my programs: linktr.ee/alecblenis

Fascinating discussion. I love hearing all the sport-specific training philosophy. It’s amazing how many different ways there are to train our bodies. It’d be cool to see you meet up with other coaches in other random sports and see what types of movements they would throw at you. Again, all the nuance and emphasis on practicality is a refreshing departure from the often dogmatic world of science-based lifting. The story about motivating athletes by making training competitive was great.
Definitely looking forward to some variety - coming up in the next month I have an elite Hyrox athlete, an 80 year old runner, and a super fit physical therapist.
Absolutely loving these videos, loads of good information, getting a varied perspective on training for a bunch of different goals is awesome, incredibly helpful and entertaining
Thank you! Really glad you’re enjoying them. Got 2 more episodes coming up this month!
What’s your motivation for doing that marathon stuff? Guessing you got into that before more general fitness work and can’t let go?
Long distance running is something special. Some things I really enjoy about it: 1) I've been able to run some of the coolest "multi-day" trails in the world in an afternoon (my favorite was a 36 mile run around Mauna Kea) - it's allowed me to see & experience so much and is truly a unique way to connect to the world/nature around you. 2) The discipline and focus involved in daily aerobic training elicits a feeling of calm & ease that strength training can't match. Strength training is great and offers things that running doesn't, but the clarity one gets from endurance training is unique. At the extreme, running ultras has a lot in common with a shroom trip. Life/stress/etc "slows down" after really big efforts for a while and you feel a lot more grounded/connected. 3) It's just good for my health!
What’s up man glad you’re posting consistently. I’ve been doing your thick n quick program and have been seeing great results
Thanks! Really glad to hear you’ve been enjoying it 🤝🤝
The merry Christmas countdown in background 😂
Cool stuff Alec! Suggestion for the time stamps, if you have a timestamp starting at 0:00 (called "intro" or whatever), it will allow the viewer to actually see the different chapters/timestamps on the screen of the video. This makes it easier to see which chapter/section is being discussed. You can try it and see the difference. Anyways, thanks for all the content. Keep it up!!
Thanks for this! I was wondering why they weren’t showing up the video. Just fixed it - hope that does the trick.
Hey that is a neat format : alec tries X (basketball s&c, mma s&c, strongman stuff, climbing, gymnastics, etc...)
I think so too! Would love to get strongman and mma on here soon
@alecblenis also armwrestling and football/rugby could be interesting
Great session!
I need to jump more
It's time. Call it the Blenis Twist.
Picking up a lot from these. The different cues on the adductor machine are exactly what I intuitively did, but I hadn’t seen someone articulate it.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
Humbling
10kg on these fuck me up baaaaaad... Using heelelevation makes it like 80% easier.
I want to see how you get in this position/ set up for this movement & then how you get out of it.
Hy alec this is totally out of context am texting here hoping that would reply ,using hack squat and making it a glute biased movement seems dumb right you can't make it glute biased because how high you keep the leg on the platform form the load is still behind your back and line of force is so close to the hip so basically the moment arm of hip is so small compared to the knee so quads will always have to do more work on a hack squat - love to hear your openion
Draw the force vector for the machine (an arrow pointing from the shoulder pads towards the foot plate, parallel with the weight sled) but also draw a force vector for the human on the machine (an arrow pointing from the feet towards the shoulder pads), then break that up into components. Because of friction the force vector for the human and for the machine will not be parallel, and the humans force vector is what you’d want to use to calculate joint torque. The problem isn’t solvable (you’d need a force plate) but this representation should give you a clearer picture of what’s happening.
@alecblenis thanks man i appreciate it I never thought about this or knew this 😂 but I would like to know your opinion about trying to bias glutes on hacksquat ,
Mate he answered your question, use critical thinking and apply it
Forget the Tren twins this is the Zesty Rascals 💪🏻
💪💪
Oh shit I've already seen this done as a deadlift alternative, but thought it wasn't gonna be that great. What do you think about doing it that way? Or even more out there in a circular motion?
Yeah there’s fun variations of this like turning into more of a spiral if you want to make it more a global spine/core stimulus but keeping it side to wide like this is a more potent oblique stimulus.
Do you have any programs to follow? Paid? Free? Anything?
Yes, I do - two main programs that you can learn more about here and on my IG linktr.ee/alecblenis
This has massively carried over to real world applications
So are you working the obliques and QL in this exercise? Could you do it without the straddle stance?
Yes, obliques and QL. You can potentially use light weight without the straddle, but eventually if you go heavy enough and/or deep enough, it would be impossible to maintain balance without widening the stance.
i wonder if these exercise will help me with order selecting. Alec?
Not sure what you mean?
@@alecblenis order selecting is a physically demanding job and most of the time you're gonna be bending over to grab 50-80lb boxes.
Holy shit dude you are goated
whats the snatch variation mentioned at the beginning?
and how heavy was that stone at the end? you should do more strongman Alec, bet you would crush!
No feet snatch. I think it was the 250 but they weren’t all labeled too well!
that high pitched squeal during the flat bench 🤣🤣🤣
😂
Started those Zercher deadlifts myself only a few weeks ago, and I absolulty love how amazing my posterior chain feels afterwards I too usually go straight to my deadlifts when I'm done now. My back always slightly tweaks when I deadlift over 400, pretty sure in a few months that won't be an issue anymore.
Good luck to you, hope it keeps going well!
Don't know what Austin was talking about with that 20 rep set of squats lmfao. There must've been like 70%+ velocity loss on that last rep compared to the first. Looked brutal.
Btw fucking love this content Alec.
True, last rep was definitely slower than the first rep but still pretty fast compared to what you’d expect within 2-3 RIR!
@@alecblenis oh for sure - the absolute speed still quite high. It’s amazing the varying degrees of endurance people have at lower velocities. Super individualized.
You boys invented like 3 new Snatch variations this day.
There are no wrong ways to snatch, only variations 😂
That guy sat on his phone while doing good girls🤦That, I think we can agree, is sub optimal and to far from failure 😂
Audio-only version for the pod apps, please!
Great video! Can you make it so the sound comes out of both speakers instead stereo. 🙏🙏🙏
Good call, will do
This is very clever
TWO OF MY FAVORITE PPL IN FITNESS LFGOOOOO
thank you ❤️
Fantastic
Thank you 🙏
10/10
Much appreciated 🤝
Nice! I recently did 2 45s+ a 25 at my upper shoulders! Got five reps!
These are great. Turing on the bell notifications for these
Thanks!
I love the casual nature of these. The banter and conversation feels natural and it produces some great content.
Thanks - yeah they’ve been super fun to make!
Your mobility is INCREDIBLE! What do you call that middle excercise? It looks like a SLDL, a good morning, and a zercher squat had an evil baby lol. I wanna try it!
Zercher Jefferson curls!
Yep, zercher jefferson curls (the way I was doing it) or zercher deadlift (the way Austin was doing it)
Zercher deadlift, I don't have the best mobility and never stretch but I can rep 3 plates in that.
Great vid and great gym
Los Campeones MN is amazing! Super loud for filming so it took some *heavy* editing to clean up the audio but seems like it turned out alright
Alec on the Jochum Podcast again ASAP
We just discovered a great filming spot; we definitely are going to record another gym session sooner than rather than later
See you all in 2032 for episode 3!
The last episode was 11 days ago! But yeah, I’ll probably snatch again in 2032 😅
These are so fun to watch and listen to. Guest have been smart and chill guys. I can see why you're friends with them. A lot of good info about training and how it fits into peoples personal life. I was getting a bit sick of everyone talking about studies and the same optimal exercises all the time
Thanks for watching and for the feedback! Appreciate the support 🙏
Thank you for your videos! I had a quick question please: In the video you say something like "I took 'core' training to the limit and there's nothing really there". Just to check I understand you correctly, if I expanded that idea out do you mean: "There's no point in static 'core' exercises like planks for the intermediate/advanced athlete, you get that 'bracing' from lifting (Deadlifts etc). Instead you should do dynamic weighted exercises through full ROM such as those demonstrated in your collab with Eugene Teo Apr 29, 2024 'The Advanced Ab Exercises That Actually Work (Seriously)'". (Sorry to be wordy, I set that out in full in hopes that would let you give a quick yes/no answer, and save you the typing)🤣🤣
It’s not so much that there’s no point at all, it’s just not the panacea for back pain and performance that some people preach. For most people I think it’s a bit redundant in the context of a program that already has a lot of bracing, but I’m not necessarily opposed to the idea of including some heavy/hard core isometrics. I just don’t think getting better at them has anything unique to offer from a pain perspective or that getting really good at planks is going to do anything for your squat/deadlift/etc
@@alecblenis Many thanks for your answer 👍
Love this series! do one with angus in the future.
Definitely planning to make it out for an Australia tour in 2025
great video! Epic workout!
Glad you liked it!! Thanks for watching
I’m really enjoying the grounded, experience-based, nuanced discussion. Also, microworkouts ftw. Get it done when you can.
Thank you! Mini sessions are amazing - definitely underestimated them in the past
Great workout. Thank you for sharing
This is gold! Thank you Alec!
Glad you enjoyed it!
MN homeboys! 🤞🏽 started following you from seeing your Murph world record. Nice to hear a glimpse of the plank WR
Thanks for tuning in! Got some more local/MN episodes coming up
Yep! Love being a master of super sets and getting in and out in 45 mins. It’s not less productive, it’s just straight business 14:21
I can get in and out 5 min tops brah 😅 no warm up/ no foreplay
Dude these have been awesome looking forward to more!
Thanks! Looking forward to making more 💪
