  • Suzie brought the 2002 tii to the Shed and it made Ivan reminisce about the 2002s he'd owned, repaired and raced in the past.
Thanks to Zac for filming our outing to the pub.
And Noel Skeats for the professional picture we slipped in there.

I grew up in the caribbean Commonwealth. My neighbor's daughter was an international flight attendant. Who was tall, beautiful, and glamorous. However, the thing that made her stand out the most was her bright orange BMW 2002 tii bought new. She would wring the neck out of that car and often make handbrake turns into the driveway.
She joked to my father, who was in-law enforcement, that his guys needed better equipment if they ever hoped to catch her in order to issue a ticket. When she got married in 1978 and started having children , she gave up the BMW for a....Beige Ford Cortina Estate 😢

The BMW's that looked like that, were the ones I fell in love with. They did it All. You could drive all day, and rally race, and use it to go to work all week. Not the plastic junk we've had since.Thank you for saving these, and sharing them with us, along with the stories they earned with the drivers.

Hello Ivan, What a delight to see your videos as always. I note your BMW has a Gloucestershire number so might possibly have been supplied new by Wild Goose Motors of Dursley. I used to work nearby in 1972 to 1974 so could easily have gazed through the window at it when brand new. I couldn’t afford one as I had my new Capri but the local Doctor had a new Tii and impressed everybody because she could afford it and few others ever could! Enjoy it well…that looks a very sound car! Richard😃😃😃😃

Hello Suzie and Ivan! Wow the "B" MW 2002 was a great video and brought back my own fond memories. In 1975 I belonged to a local Club Rally group in Hamilton Ontario and I was running a factory BL Mini 1000, with the only mod being a Stebro exhaust! There was a young chap (Roman) used to borrow his mother's 2002 to thrash it around the country roads, usually night rallying. Well this fellow was a looney and he had all the mods, Koni's, Marschal lights and he absolutely drove the thing like a pro. He ended up our club hero for his likeable character and his antics. Thanks ever-so-much for a lovely video, and you certainly have a fine example of the timeless marque. Cheers from Canada, Paul.🤓

I must have owned close to a dozen bmws over the years. Loved them all. e28s e34s an e36a couple 320i's came first. They all had a smell, feel and always seemed to be built to handle much more power than they had. Wonderful dailies.

My father classic raced a 1973 BMW 2002 tii. As I'm an Alfa fan I was amazed how completely rust free it was. It also turned out to be very reliable. Just needed an oil cooler. I found it fast and very capable, but didn't grab me like my Alfas did, but my father still talks fondly of it

We left England in 1968 when I was 10. We'd had a Mini at the time, bought new via employee discount as a couple of my aunts worked in Castle Bromwich. Prior to that though we'd had an Imp. It was bought used but the car couldn't have been more than a year old. I didn't know anything about anything at that time and I don't recall it ever breaking down but the impression left on me is that my parents never fully trusted it. The rear window latch WAS particularly random and had a mind of its own.
I was going to conjecture that I recall mention of the transmission but . . . that might be nuanced. My mom, to a degree, learnt to drive in the Imp. Teaching is a skill. A skill my dad never ever approached mastering. That "You're breaking the car Samir" video comes to mind. On reflection I bet my 'stick in the mud' dad wasn't keen on her having a driver's license. She signed up for professional lessons and did it anyway. Then bought an old Ford Prefect. Good for her!

It's funny, my brother bought a near new e12 520i that had the same engine fitted with Kugleficsher injection, fast car in its day but if it didn't start straight away it always wet it's plugs, the tow car of choice (dad's car) was a Mk1 3000E capri that never failed to start!
I remember my brother test driving a 2002 turbo at a local used car dealer, think it was around £3000 in 1976.

A bog standard car and he was overtaking 911s...I thought he did amazingly well. Please watch and let us know what you thought of his driving. i think you would love it. He is a wonderful chap and will soon be a big channel. Not as wonderful as you of course. Please watch .
I await with anticipation for the great Ivan Dutton, saloon car champion, to offer his valued opinion.
Love the 2002. I had a 2000Lux in around 1980 which had wonderful front end styling on an otherwise similar small saloon body and similar/same engine and running gear ( I think() to the 2002s.

Great stuff Ivan, love your stories from past motorsport events. I don’t have a lot of love for modern BMWs , call it an image thing , whatever. Years ago 1970s- early 1980s , on the other hand had huge respect for them . More compact cars in those days ( like all manufacturers I suppose) , but the quality of the build , despite being so much simpler , was clearly evident. Only drove one 2002 tii , gearbox was a nice change but the ratios seemed quite wide between gears compared to the Ford Escort Mexico MK1 , I owned previously, and the various Italian cars I had later in my driving years. Engine, absolutely turbine smooth for a 4 cylinder unit though. The later 320i cars were not quite so powerful , 125bhp compared to 130bhp of the Tii , and a bit heavier which , although went up a stage in specification , somehow diluted the performance. BMW later introduced the 323i though to add more flavour. Nice vid
