VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Well, this is a big milestone for me, folks. It’s also going to be a hell of a learning experience. And so I figured, hey!…let’s learn together, shall we?
What is this big milestone, you ask? My first ever fine art photography solo exhibit, that’s what. Yes, fine art photography. Not that janky “okay art photography” everyone else is doing. And hey it only took me 23 years of pursuing photography to get it, but who’s to say that’s a long time? I mean…my inner critic does. But F that guy. He’s always a Debbie Downer. I’m just thrilled to be given this opportunity. This is going to something I look back on with fondness in my old age (“Ah, you remember my first solo exhibit? That was a lot of work, but I sure had fun doing it. Also, how do I restore my backup consciousness from the cloud? And what’s wrong with kids these days with their holograms and AI-generated music? Remember when everyone had jobs?).
So I’m going to try to soak in every moment of this process. The fun, the stressful moments, the anticipation, the fear…it’s all part of the journey, brother. I’m only going to have a first solo exhibit once in my life, so I better absorb every last bit of it.
The exhibit in question is titled “American Desert” and will be at the beautiful Casa Romantica Cultural Center in San Clemente, CA starting in September and going through December. I’ll be putting all sorts of analog photography images on display - all with a unifying “American Southwest” theme. So we’re talkin’ lots of 4x5 Polaroid peel apart film and 6x17 images of saguaros. Can ya dig it?
I’ll be posting videos in (somewhat) real time as I progress through this process, so keep an eye out for more coming soon.

Nothing makes me wish more I lived in the USA than this, to see Nick's work in person.
Me too
same
Yep. How much is a plane ✈️ ticket from Oxford to California these days anyways??can’t be that much…
Seriously considering hopping on a metal bird from Australia to see this in person. I’m so hyped for you, Nick! And what a stunning venue.
❤🇺🇸 One thing I realized - if you want to be a GREAT photographer you MUST have an "American" project in your portfolio :)
Just a few examples:
Americans - Robert Frank
American Photographs - Walker Evans
American Prospects - Joel Sternfeld
American Surfaces - Stephen Shore
American Power - Mitch Epstein
American Night - Paul Graham
American Mirror - Philip Montgomery
American Index - Taryn Simon
(there are a few younger folks)
American Geography - Matt Black
American Cloud - Kaj O’Connell
(Surprisingly Alec Soth doesn't have a project with a word "American" in its title. But most of his photo projects are very American in its core.)
Even if you are a Canadian, you still have to make an "American" project:
American Mile - Kyle McDougall 🇨🇦
American Squares - Leah Frances 🇨🇦
American Dreams - Ian Brown 🇨🇦
Well, you get the point… So American Desert officially puts Mr. Carver in the pantheon of greatest photographers in human history 😁 Good luck with your solo exhibit, Nick! ❤
Ole Hansson, sounds like a Swedish name to me. So first name more like Ollie, Olly...than you know...old.
I wish I could see one of your prints one day, without social media compression.
Oh and one more thing. You should reconsider your framing in the end 😅.
Those bull horns are kind of in the wrong spot hahahaha.
I recently held my first exhibit, I remade old photographs of my town as close a possible to the original ones and it was a HUGE success... I mean, it was free entrance but hundreds of people showed in a town with 1500 people! Now I'm looking into expanding it to all the towns of my valley to have a bigger portfolio and maybe make some money off it, which wouldn't hurt :D
That said, It was so cool hearing all the comparisons between old and new and all the stories from older people, some of which were present in the old pictures!
Good luck for your exhibit!
Congrats Nick. The venue looks amazing and I am sure your show will be fantastic. Look forward to seeing the rest of the videos to see the journey. Good luck.
"Ole" is a Danish boy's name and "Hansen" is very common as a surname. I think Ole Hansen emigrated from Denmark. Good luck with your exhibition.
I was just about to comment something similar but instead of Denmark i'd go with either Norway or Sweden, given the surname Norway would be my best bet.
Congratulations on the solo show Nick. That is a huge achievement!
You are an amazing artist/human that has the most crazy eye for details and perfection so I can’t imagine this show to be anything less then perfect
Congrats on the exhibition. That’ll be amazing and what a gorgeous location. That’ll be incredible.
That’s freaking awesome Nick!!!! I’m requesting that day off now! Can’t wait!
Wonderful news, Nick! Congratulations!
Are you going to to make all your prints new and framed , would you consider putting your your train pano that you have on your wall there as a feature piece on a wall of its own ? It's a lot of work, good luck and looking forward to seeing a video of the final exhibition 😊 you've already se K ected the desert layers I see for that alcove 😊
Amazing. This is well deserved. How long is the show going to be up? Also, I recommend including the Ice Shack photo from the 3-Days AZ trip. 🙂 That's a keeper.
First time all by yourself, huh? Gee, no pressure there.
How about some suggestions for future show titles? Like "Nick's Noodlings" or "Carver's Creations" ? No? Ok, give'em time, they'll grow on you.
What do you mean 'Sand Symphony' is pretentious? It's timeless! It's gold!
I would've flown all the way from Norway to USA just to see that exhibition but now that you're going with 'American Desert' (blegh) I'm not gonna. There's also the financially insane bit about flying across the globe just for an exhibition but the name is the main reason.
Anyway I love your videos and I wish you luck with your weirdly non-A.I. named exhibition (the sooner you embrace A.I. the more lenient it'll be when the time comes). Maybe your next exhibition will be called 'A.I. Symphony'.
Congratulations Nick. My passport expires in August, I guess I better work on the renewal process.
On another note, have you considered an after-show companion exhibit titled American Dessert...?
Nick I was just watching this again, and I see something that is very annoying.
You have your computer monitors in front of your nice desert train print.
Yeah, you know what I am talking about.
Either, the monitors or the print.
Somethings got to go.
Congratulations Nick!, what a project and opportunity!!
We will love to be with you in this journey to September. (in a virtual way of course)
Cheers!
hi Nick...I've been in for some "servicing" for quite some time, largely off-line (sometimes *unable* to be online), and I wanted to hear how your show went?
I hope that the opening and show were successful, as you would judge "success"!
all the best!
😆“Arid Absorption” sounds like a geological process, but I digress. Congrats, brother! Maybe I’ll try to get down there! Cheers!
Hi Nick, I was very interested watching your old New55 videos and was wondering if you’ve ever experimented with dry colloidal process plates? I know Zebra can do custom sizes. I can just imagine one in your pano LF
Ole Hansen. Pronounced "Oler" or some close approximation. Reminds me of a sign in the work canteen in Texas - a choice of "cole slaw" or "hot slaw". Anyway - congrats on the exhibition, I wish I could visit!!
Ole Hansen. Probably a norwegian/danish name. First name is not pronounced as "Old" 🤣 The most common english pronounciation is more like "Oh Lee" (not correct that either, but what can you do?)
Edit: Congratulations on the exhibition!
Wish I was going to be on the West Coast in September. I’d definitely come to see your exhibit. I’m getting ready now for my part of a multi-photographer exhibit here in Rochester, NY also in September. For me, they are always vanity projects (vs money-makers) but lots of fun nonetheless.
Hi Nick, do you have a new watch? this is a gift? looks like an open heart with Bulova horns, and the color suits you very well, it's probably American to choose a light-colored watch, to my mind.
I won’t be able to visit your exhibition, unfortunately, but I’m very happy for you, I remember your videos about festivals, I agree with you very much on this matter.
Excelent bro! I'm happy for you, the space looks great, and I believe is perfect for your work. Exito!
Congrats, Nick! Definitely going to drive up from San Diego. How long will the exhibit run?
Congratulations Nick! I’m a follower of your work and enjoy the videos! Very talented you are!
Congratulations on your upcoming solo exhibition sounds and looks very exciting glad the place wasn`t destroyed by the landslide ...the name Ole Hansen is very very common in Denmark in fact I have a little brother called Ole but not Hansen :))
Congrats! I'm very happy to hear that , about time , I always talk about your work, and I have been wondering wend you will have your show, you have excellent work, I'm a fan . people need to see this project. Good luck with everything
Super congrats on the solo show Nick!!! I know you'll knock it out of the park....just try to have some fun with it. It would be cool to see what your "hero" thinks of your presentation...........
Really nice that this is happening for you. Unfortunately I live too far away to partake but maybe you will have a traveling exhibition. The Dali Museum in Florida would be convenient for me.
Congrats on the opportunity Nick. Will you please do a how-to video using Photoshop to design your exhibit, please?
I want to buy your Zine, love your Photos.
Micke in Sweden.
Sound great, and exiting! Well deserved, I'd say. And meeting your hero - I hope we get some kind of interview out of it? Or some nice portrait shots? 😁
Beatiful art! I'm inspired with your work and how you love your job. 🎉
I used to work in San Clemente years ago, I guess its a good time to go back!. Congratulations Nick!. I would have thought you would have the show in Joshua Tree lol, but San Clemente is really nice.
Another great video Nick. Can't wait to see how this pans out over the coming months. This is completely off topic but when you are a little less busy, I'd love you to do a video of how you have set up/use that big silver chunk of OWC enclosure on top of you desk. I need to upgrade my external storage soon. All the best.
Dude, if i was from America, i would drive from new york to california just to see this, congratulations!
Best of luck with your exhibition. I'm sure that you'll produce a video on said 📷👍
Lots of work and expense in a solo exhibit. Congratulations, Nick, and good luck.
This is awesome. I grew up in San Clemente and Mr. Delanty was actually my high school art teacher. Stoked for you!
Congratulations Nick, this very well deserved!
Congratulation, Nick! I look forward to your other videos. Also, I hope you will make a catalogue and that you are willing to send these to Europe. Unfortunately it is not possible to visit your show in person.
From Spain, I wish you the best Nick. I would like to be there for the inauguration!
I’ve never clicked a video this fast! Excited to start my Monday with this one.
Hi Nick
How exciting
Just wish I was over your side of the pond on my birthday as I cannot imagine a better way to spend it than sipping wine / bourbon while looking at your exhibition.
I will have to make do with sipping wine / bourbon while looking at your prints on my wall
Still a great treat!
Hi Nick, congrats on the exhibit. I love your work and I am a Greg Crewdson fan too. Thank you for introducing me to Kenton Nelson. I'll be there for your show and hopefully get to meet you.
Congratulations Nick! Looking forward to seeing your work in person. Tim
Also enjoyed looking up Kenton Nelson and his book, Water. Thanks for including it in your setting.
Hi Nick, thank you for letting us take part in this project / adbventure. Best regards from over the ocean, Michael
Your show is going to rock!!!!! Might even fly to California just for your show!
Please do a live stream of any part of the preparation, installment or whatever you fill comfortable with. As one of the many fans you have from out of USA (greetings from Chile here), I'll be thrill to show my support there!
Dude, I'm so happy for you. Wishing you all the best on the exhibit!
Ole is possibly pronounced oh-lee . Just how we pronounce it in the great northern states
Anyway < very cool and congrats Nick. Big fan
Congratulations, looking forward to it. Now, tell me where you got that damn hat!!!!!!
Congratulations Nick .. hope I make it to California to see the exhibit. Best of luck !
Gutted that as part of our trip from the UK I will be in San Clemente at the start of August rather than mid-Sept 😢 but I will look into the Kenton Nelson exhibition that is is in Santa Monica over the next couple of months - really like his work which reminds me a bit of Jack Vettriano?
For a split second when you said you were "F-ing ecstatic" I almost thought you were going to say you learned that Casa Romantica Cultural Center used to be a Taco Bell.
Got a bit ahead of myself and jumped to find Kenton Nelson, and THEN you mention him by name! All's well that ends well.
Nick good luck with the show. I wish I could attend maybe next time.
Congratulations Nick. Wish I was in America to come and see your show!
Break a leg. Only wish I didn’t live so far away on the east bank. Would love to see the show. I’ll be the ranch that your show willl be a huge success. Cheers,
Hope I'll be able to get an edition of your zine here in Brazil. Love your work. Congrats.
Is framing and printing part of the contract? Could you cover those type of details?
I'm keenly interested in this series. Selecting the images to use of course but also how to present them so that there is harmony. How to frame them, what sizes, how to hang them to create flow without clutter. I think this will be very helpful but getting that many prints framed and ready by the deadline would scare me to death. I'm anxious to see how this progresses. I'm most interested in the shadow box frames and mats so if you have opportunity in a future video to do a close-up that would be great.
Nice one Nick, look forward to seeing the process man.
Awesome...congratulations it is big for any artist. Best wishes for the solo.
Aww man! I hope you get to meet Kenton Nelson! That sounds awesome..
And congrats on the show!
Congratulations! Looking forward to see the process!
Awesome Nick! Congratulations!
Congrats Nick! I think I'll drive down the 5 and check it out when it opens.
How could you live in California and not know how to pronounce, "cAsa"?
Thanks this is the content. I need to prepare for my first photography exhibition.
That's a very exciting experience...to have your first solo show! :-) I remember the first time I had a whole exhibition space all to myself. The selection process took A LONG time, but like you said at the end...it's the hard but FUN work! Good luck on it being more fun than hard in your case! 🙂
Ye, well done Nick for getting an exhibition, to show all of your hard work, I think it will be a great for all the punters, after which, i think the orders will come in thick and fast.
Great news Nick, many congratulations pal.
How did I not recognize a bit of Andreas Gursky in your work.
Nick, It is pronounced O-lee and is a common Norwegian name. I live in Minnesota and we have a lot of Oles.
Greg crewdson is one of my favourite photographers as well
This is very exciting! Congratulations.
Your wonderful work deserves an exhibition like this.
Wow. Congrats...sounds exciting...and stressful.
That is awesome. You similarly inspire many other artists around the youtubes!
The video ended right before it became interesting
Hope you'll show us more of the process
Good on you Nick, remember to take it in and enjoy this experience. Solid title by the way.
First congratulations is at hand. You'll do great. I can wait to see it in your RUclips ❤
You're not into Todd Hido? Oddly enough you strike mas a Todd Hido fan.
Congratulations! Do you know how long it will be up? I would love to see your work displayed in person
Virtually laying out your exhibit in Photoshop is genius. A worthy how to topic?
This is just too hip. I have to get down to see this - and, fortunately, it’s an easy drive for me.
Nice one Nick! Mate I wish I was living in US and A right now...
Congratulations and best of luck! Huge.
That’s so cool 👍🏻. Congratulations
This is so exciting! Maybe I need to take a sick day from work to see your exhibit
oh, I wish I could be there... but unfortunately, no
I was so excited when I had my first solo show back around 1990. Until I found out that a certain lady photographer that was very popular in the town's photo scene was having an opening next to me, on the same day (multi room gallery). And she had also made a food spread that any restaurant would be proud to make. Needless to say, you could hear the proverbial crickets in my gallery space, while her space was like the gala at The Met. I learned that day the meaning of feeling deflated. I wish you the complete opposite experience from mine.
I hope your show goes a good I've been following you 4 little while about a year or so really like your work
