    I'm glad to see people talking about (and using!) the Steam Deck as a PC, as most only just mention it passively.
    Edit: also when you mentioned your Elgato cam-link I was worried it wouldn't work, I have an Elgato HD60s (not the plus) and it does not work on Linux for me at all. Glad to see other Elgato hardware working at-least.

    Just a note: it's not a vent it's covering a bit on the back, it's the air intake that sucks air in and doesn't impair the ability at all (I've used it for months on end without problems).
    Additionally, you don't need desktop mode to change game resolution, it's available in Gaming Mode in the properties - you can select a forced resolution there.

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser Год назад +6

      Err, in non-technical speech, an air intake is a type of vent.
      Covering part of it won't matter if you're not doing anything that makes the machine run hot enough to really need that extra airflow, but if you Are, then having the vent partially blocked forces the fan to work harder to compensate. Which means that it draws more power, wears out quicker, and is louder. Now, the power draw would only really be important when undocked (and thus running on the battery), at which point, of course, one assumes the intake would not be obstructed. Of course, put enough demand on the thing and the hardware starts throtteling to bring its temperature back down. Obstructing the intake lowers the point at which it hits that limit. Perhaps not by much, but it does.

    • @gamingonlinux
      @gamingonlinux Год назад +1

      @@laurencefraser Well yes vent covers both meanings technically, but a lot of people seem to mix it up between an in and out, so worth mentioning.

    A little bit misinformed here 5:45
    He says you need to run games in desktop mode to play higher than 800p but you can play games >800p in game mode outside of desktop mode. you just need to enable higher resolutions in the property settings of each game. This also gives you the option to render a higher resolution in handheld mode and downscale it to 720p. You also lose FSR1.0 when you try playing games outside of game mode unless you enter a command in the launch options in steam to turn FSR1.0 on and tell it how sharp or smooth you want it.
    You will 100% want to be using FSR1.0 when playing games at a lower resolution on a bigger higher resolution screen. Most monitor scaling options are not great.

      @laurencefraser Год назад +2

      There is the slight issue that the dock is connecting to the deck through the deck's USB controller... so is already acting as a USB hub, meaning you're effectively daisy chaining USB hubs at that point. You run into the issue of, no matter how many sockets you have, the USB controller in the deck itself can still only handle so much stuff at a time (not sure if it is limited more by overall data or number of distinct things connected). Which would lead to either more demanding things having reduced performance, or things in lower priority sockets just not connecting, or other such failure states.
      Still, until you hit those limits (and remember, anything dealing with video is Very resource intensive), it would work well enough, yes.

    Also bought their carrying case and its good. Below Steam Deck there is small compartment that can fit JSAUX Dock or original charger + smaller USB C HUB. Also it have dedicated pockets for SD cards. Personally I have additional charger so I use JSAUX Case for travel that is always ready to go with original charger and small usb HUB. I'm glad the JSAUX dock seemed to work out for you - they look and feel so good and have all I want, but I have ordered 2 (of the non-M.2 versions) and man they just stop working, charging, or responding randomly; and overall, just are way too bug-prone in my experiences.
    The random portable dock (j5-create I think) which is significantly dinkier and looks worse, it worked like right away. I just wanted it as my porta-dock though, but I can't find another that works bug-free

    I would like to point out that the original Steam Dock has hardware and software in it that third party docks don't have. That is the reason why the Steam Dock actually has firmware updates from time to time, as the software in there needs updating as well. That is why I personally wouldn't go for any third party dock, regardless of their features, since the original one is made for the Steam Deck and has software to make it work better.

    Steamdeck does actually allow changing the resolution in gaming mode, but on a per-game basis through it's properties. It changes the rendering resolution of the game scope compositor, so if you're connected to say a 1080p display and select 1920x1080 as the game's resolution in it's properties it will render to the full display properly. By default, games run in a 1280x720 or 1280x800 container depending on if you're on a 16:9 or 16:10 display, respectively.

    The NVME is neat, but with an extra usb3.0 you can just plug in an extra external SSD. Potential difference in read-write for productivity tasks is negligible, and you can still use the extra USB slot for other tasks as well, or more readily hot-swap drives.

    • @Pyroteq
      @Pyroteq Год назад +1

      It's not really nvme speeds anyway. It's just a USB to m.2 adapter inside a chassis. Aside from aesthetics it's no different to just plugging in your own adapter. The read speeds on it are only 900mb/s which is only about a third of an average nvme SSD's max speeds, so using any sort of high speed SSD in it is a complete waste of money. You'd be better off getting some larger and cheaper external SSD's and plugging them into the USB ports.

    I love the JSAUX dock, but what you pointed out of it is exactly the reason why I went with ivoler's dock, it comes with all inputs on the back (no awkward ethernet cable sticking out of the side), no airvent block, so that's why I chose it. JSAUX has a good proposition by including a nvme slot in the dock, but it's not completely necessary for a fully portable system, but very appreciated. On another note, I don't like the design, nor Ivolers one (perhaps the material? i'm not sure)

  • @KingKrouch

    Regarding the issue with resolutions in game mode, if you go into the game's properties on Steam, you can change the resolution from 1280x800 to "Native" or something else. That's great regarding flexibility, as I've seen some bad PC ports of games that stretch or get crushed on 16:10 or ultrawide monitors, and getting them to work on Linux or the Steam Deck (And with either integer scaling or FSR 1.0) is ridiculously easy compared to Windows.
    Another thing I find interesting when docked is the 120Hz output option at 1440p. While you'll still need upscaling for most games, THPS 1+2 (Via Heroic), Project DIVA MegaMix, Deep Rock Galactic, Half-Life 2, the Senran Kagura games, and Overwatch 2 (Via Lutris) all have no issues getting close to (or locking at) 120FPS from my time playing around with things, and I'd imagine framepacing is going to be way better once that VRR/FreeSync toggle that is in the testing branches gets fully implemented (As Gamescope now supports disabling VSync AND has VRR support). Really like how easy it is to set up controllers or getting bad ports of games working compared to Windows, and the UI feels really nicely integrated, Xbox Game Bar and third-party frontends like Launchbox/Playnite feel light years behind. There's also not a gazillion electron web apps running in the background and hogging RAM like on Windows.
    I was going to set up HoloISO on an HTPC setup that I recently built, but the 5.13 kernel version used by SteamOS has screen flickering issues with my RX 6700XT and 6900XT that didn't get resolved on other distros (Fedora and Arch primarily) until the 6.1 kernel update, and it seemingly doesn't play nice with the integrated graphics that come with the i5-13600K, so I installed Windows 11 on it for the time being.
