No smut, no swearing, funny jokes and above all absolute impeccable timing. Morcombe and Wise were the last of the old fashioned Music Hall acts. Afraid will not see their likes again. Des O’Connor was a good sport to take part.

The Previn sketch played a part at my youngest sister's Wedding ... she'd given birth about 18 months before getting married. My Father was then 73, and a traditionalist at heart ... During his speech he mentioned that his new son-in-law had been responsible for two very happy events, the birth of his 4th Grandchild and the Wedding Day .... Dad continued " I am however, a man of my time, and I have resisted the urge to grab Mike by the lapels, slap his face ( a la Eric Morecambe ) and say " You're giving me all the good news, sunshine, but not necessarily in the right order !! " ... It brought the house down !!

Des O'Connor was on our screens for years - he died a few months ago, his shows were easy listening and jokey. Everyone wanted to be on the Eric & Ernie shows, hence there was always an "A lister" appearing each week. I think we had about 4 TV channels back then. The days of Morecombe and Wise have long gone, taken over by something they call comedy .... Thanks for the video guys.

Des O’Connor just died at the end of November. He was an all round entertainer, originally a comedian, he was a pleasant and popular middle of the road singer and a hugely likeable TV personality who hosted many chat shows, game shows and variety shows. He was huge at the London Palladium, breaking box office records, and starred in successful TV series and shows for more decades than any other entertainer, for over 5O years. He had a terrific 1980s series on BBC introducing unknown US comedians - he introduced the likes of Jay Leno to the UK, and a very big ITV midweek celebrity chat show and entertainment series. He was the butt of Morecambe and Wise jokes for years until he appeared here in this clip, I remember it, and his good humoured appearance here enhanced what many viewers thought of him. He kept his looks well into his eighties and long after his contemporaries were dead or retired, he was still big in daytime TV and as a special guest. We don’t have those sort of entertainers now, family-friendly, no swearing, gentle comedy, times have changed.

You are both just great! I was a child at the time these shows were recorded , but I do remember that gentler form of comedy. The jokes were the kind that your Dad or Grandad might tell. The whole 'teasing Des O'Connor' part of Morecambe and Wise's act started when Des was very ill and unable to work for some months. He had played the same theatres in the past as this duo and they were great friends. Des was worried audiences would forget him and it might be hard to find work once he was well again to support his family, so the duo cooked up this idea to keep Des' name before the public. He needn't have worried as he had a pleasant light baritone voice , could tell jokes and was a very good compere for TV shows. He was well liked by the public. It is good to know that when Eric was ill with the heart condition ,which sadly took him away from us eventually, Des was a really supportive friend to him.

Apparently, in the old days, when they used to do the comedy circuit together. The roughest and toughest venue was the Empire theatre in Glasgow. The audiences there weren't very keen on English performers. And, on one occasion they became so hostile that Des fainted on stage (feigned or real it was never made clear) and had to be carried off. Morecambe and Wise never stopped teasing him about it.

There was actually a slight underlying edge to this. Morecambe and Wise had come up the hard way in the late 1950s touring the UK and playing theatres to live audiences in obscure provincial backwaters, staying at cheap hotels and 'lodgings'. When they transferred to the new medium of television it was initially with some difficulty and not immediately successful. Des O'Connor by contrast was younger and one of the 'new breed' of comedians who were more shaped by television itself and not by touring the provinces on a demanding show-biz treadmill.
Morecambe and Wise affectionally referenced their vaudeville tradition by often standing in front of heavy curtains in the television studio, as I'm sure you will have seen.

Des’ singing was okay, he was a crooner - not in the class of a Sinatra, but the type of act your grandma would like. In the 1970s Morecombe and Wise’ teasing became a part of popular culture to the extent that most people poked fun at him; it didn’t seem to bother Des too much and he had enough loyal fans from his 60s shows to remain a popular singer. He also became a popular game show host.

They were very good friends in real life, despite often telling a rather damning story about Des's early career. Playing the Moss Empire theatre in Glasgow (the graveyard of English Comics - M&W had walked off the stage to their own footsteps one night, only for the fireman to remark 'Och, they're starting to like yer...'), Des had found himself following a popular husband and wife singing act. When the husband was knocked down in a road accident, the wife bravely went on solo every night, causing the otherwise hardened Glaswegian audience to choke back the tears as they watched. One night the pressure became too great and, in hysteria, she began shouting for Des. Rushing from his dressing room, he was confronted with a packed audience of Scots who would rather he was dead than the deceased man, and panicked. The only way out was to throw a faint and he was carried off the stage - leading Eric to summarize the affair with the line 'Good Evening, Ladies & Gentleman.... Thud!'

Dea O’Connor became a national treasure in the U.K. but this happened later with the passage of time. At this point in time he was a singer - sort of old school crooner type. He has a good voice but this type of music was old fashioned even then. He transitioned in to presenting light entertainment shows and prime time game shows and in the late 1990’s would have been presenting tv shows watched by over 20 million viewers

They'd worked together since the early 1940's , when in their teens. At the time of the Previn sketch, they were 45 and 46, although they look older .. The origin of the banter between Eric & Ernie and Des is said to go back to Des's earliest performance in Glasgow. The story goes that Des had a really bad time, the audience did not like him and Des left the stage to the sound of his own footsteps. The following week, Eric & Ernie played the same venue. When they got a laugh, Eric immediately made a comment about Des' fate the previous week. The comment was not made maliciously, Eric was just having a bit of fun. Des got to hear about it. Des, being the person that he was, did not take offence. The three of them were long time friends. I've the story from a couple of places, but I don't know if it is actually true.

"The injections" is a joke by Eric, implying Des's behaviour is odd. I would recommend their appearance, where David Frost interviewed them-- you could M&W and Des were good friends
James Corden certainly upset Patrick Stewart once, during an awards ceremony.
