Do you need 4 wheel drive in Hawaii? Waipio Valley Black Sand Beach Travel Vlog

- Waipio Valley is one of our favorite spots to visit on the Big Island of Hawaii. At the top is a scenic lookout, but if you have the energy, we recommend making your way to the bottom where you'll find a black sand beach, waterfall, and if you're lucky, wild horses. You can either hike, drive, or hire a shuttle to get to the bottom.
If you drive yourself, it's a good idea to have a 4 wheel drive (4WD). But other than that, is it worth renting a 4x4 for your vacation to the Big Island? We answer that question in this video.

FYI the valley is now closed for this type of adventure for tourists even hiking. It's only open to Big Island residents, county-permitted tour company operators and those seeking to practice Native Hawaiian traditional or customary rights.
stupid
Heading to Oahu few days from now for our holiday & elope wedding.Watching your videos now.Thank you
Thanks for watching! Hawaii is wonderful
That it a great tour down to the valley in 1985 was in this vary spot back then you could rent Suzuki samurais but we chose a car so watch this we now got to see the valley thank you for the tag along 🏆🤔 aloha
Thank you guys. This is very helpful excited to go to the big island on the 15th.
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it ❤️
We rented a jeep exactly for that drive when we went to Big Island. It was a great experience driving down and back up the road. Thanks for remo doing me how great it was by showing this video. We also drove Green Sand Beach which was amazing too and Mauna Kea, but we took bus tour up to the top. Is a crazy drive.. thanks again for sharing
You're welcome. We love to capture and share beautiful experiences
Where did you rent your jeep?
No more tourists driving up and down the valley. It’s sacred and should be protected
Great footage! Keep in mind most rental car companies do not allow you to go beyond 9200ft of the road to Mauna Kea summit although many people ignore and go anyways. It should be stated in your contract in the fine print. If something happens to your car beyond 9200ft, the rental car insurance won’t cover it.
That's a good point. Thanks for sharing!
Book through black rock rentals!
Fun video guys! Was about to hike it by foot but I guess I’ll be using our 4x4 pickup since you said it was more fun going with a vehicle🤙
It's fun both ways, but if you like hard core driving, definitely take the car.
@@GeminiDiscover haha we like a little thrill so we will definitely be doing the drive🛻 about to have some breakfast and head there soon! Will update you later on to tell you how it went!
Thanks for sharing this video. How long is the drive down to the beach?
Me love her long time.
Waipio Valley is now closed to the public including all Hawaii residents who do not live in the valley or have business in the valley.
Wow! Glad we saw it and filmed it
Is the valley closed permanently.
Where could I check what’s open and what’s closed ?? I’m going April 15th and I’m trying to figure out if I should get a 4x4
Not sure...maybe Instagram or Google Maps (check recent reviews).
You are required to have a 4x4 vehicle to drive down Waipio or the guard won’t let you drive down. You must also be in 4low to go down the road safely, recommend to stay in 1st gear the whole way down till the intersection.
In what gear did you drive up? 4x4 and slow? Was that your method?
Yes
no tourists :(
yoo i live there💀
Cool place!
