    this bus is sitting in Vermont ,found it last summer .its in good company ,got about four other busses too.

    I must have been 6 or 7 years old when i rode one with my mom and brothers into town back in 70-71. It was 1.00 for us four and it was a big thing. Greyhound used to pass by our house at 415pm, and then at 515pm doing the local route from SF to Salinas. I live outside of watsonville Ca. It brought back some cool memories. Greyhound used to share the Building with the Meadow Gold dairy. Remember that???

    Another fun fact: the Scenicruisers were designed and styled by the famous industrial designer Raymond Lowey, who also styled the legendary GG1 locomotive. The days of sexy-looking large vehicles are long gone, sad to say.

    "Rolling out of the factory, the 4501 had 2 Detroit 4-71 engines hooked to a fluid coupler that then went to the transmission. It was a disaster. In 1960-1961, Marmon-Herrington repowered the remaining/existing 4501's with the Detroit 8V-71 which had been specifically designed to address the power and synchronization deficiencies present in the original configuration."
    The one in this video is definitely a single 8V71.

      I am amused by a Popular Science magazine article from the mid-1950s in which the author touted the twin-engine system as a virtue. His reasoning was that if one engine failed, the driver could dump the fluid from its coupling and keep rolling. In fact the engines were nearly bulletproof, but the fluid coupling and transmission combination was troublesome.

    A couple of Measley seconds spent video taping the interior( Even if it's M/T ) would have made this much more interesting to watch. 71/2 min, of watching you drive it all over just made me jealous after about a minute or so,Would love to agree with others who commented " Nice Bus" but I Can't because all I saw was the outside and a bit of the Drivers seat, It sounded real good, and I truely was jealous. Thanks for the taste.

    Very nice coach, There was actually a very similar coach manufatured in Mexico , what made it unique was that it had two steering axles .

    COOL BUS!! I love to sound of those 2 stroke Detroits humming down the asphault. I am shopping for an MCI with an 8V71 and a 5 speed, but would to have one of those ScenicCruisers. GREAT VIDEO and I envy you. GREAT BUS!!

    Don't quote me, but I believe all the 8V71 engines of that era were two-stroke.

    yeah you usually don't rev between shifts when upshifting but only to match gears when downshifting.. on upshifing just go to neutral and wait till she spins down, and engage.. sometimes no clutching works... you have to get to know your tranny.

    With rewgarsd to the fluid coupling, it al;so activated a 2-speed thingy with 3 standard three-speed manual transmission, in a few cases with a SOLENOID FLOOR BUTTON CLUTCH!! Wonder how long THAT kind of clutch's shelf life was..:)

    Hey, Sido, you asked "zimtok" the very same thing on linkage [his very excellent IMHO "double cluthcing" one] and as he said, there's mechanical linkage to the back [the GMC's are all rear powered.]

    @wolfhawg You must certainly double clutch all downshifts. On the up-shift you can go just a little quicker with a double clutch but a smooth driver will roll out of the throttle as he steps on the clutch, shift at just the right time to meet the engine slowing down and roll into the throttle again. With 4 forward gears there are only three shifts from standing still to highway speeds, unlike a semi where a dozen or more are common. Remember it's a bus and smooth drivers are appreciated!

    Rev it up to the governor, pull it into neutral, wait 3 seconds and pull back to 2nd and she'll drop right in without using the clutch. You can double clutch or not depending your skill and comfort level. It's a feel developed through experience.

    @DeserTBoB93535 indeed it was the Sultana, there was 2 models with twin steering axles, the Imperial which was almost indentical to the pd 4501, and the wierd looking Panoramico. They were very nice coaches powered by a detroit 8v71 or a cummings 350 big cam was an optional engine.

    Nice Scenicruiser! There was a bus in Australia called the Denning - not as flash as the Scenicruiser but a great bus none-the-less! Does that example have full airbag suspension??? It seemed to be floating a bit on the right front when the brakes were applied!

    Too answer the question about the license plates. many years ago ,commercial vehicles had to have a plate for every state that they ran in. You should see thee front of bed-bug [furniture ] haulers.

    very nice coach, I love the 8v71 engine I'd replace the transmission with 5pd rockwell , then that would eliminate the need to double clutch or using the clutch period. also could split the gears. I'd give my left nut for a chance to drive one of those beauties

    what ide like to know about the bus? i see 2 axels under the hind end of it.. are they like current buses? one being a driver and one being a floater? or are they like the truck i drive where both are powered axels?

    Does anyone know if these early GM's had clutch brakes fitted or when they were first introduced.
    From the sound of the driver tickling the first gear it either does not have the clutch brake or it need adjusting.

    I don't know why he's double clutching. That's a non syncronized transmission. I guess no one taught him how to float the gears.

    Absolutely no reason to "double clutch" that bus.U still have to wait for the RPM to come DOWN, to go to next higher gear.By revving the engine,between gears,U just make that wait longer..

    The reason behind the two engines was because the 8v71 wasnt ready for production. So they made due with two 4-71s connected through a fluid coupling. Needless to say, it didnt work very well. Btw serama, what happened to 853 after this video was taken and before you guys got a hold of it?

    Doesn't know how to properly drive this bus. He's trying to drive it and shift it like a car. The motor is overrevved, thats why he has to rev between shifts, which is also wrong. Your grinding gears because your trying to force it.

      I agree, this is a bus not a dragster and most importantly it's a *Scenicruiser* to boot. It really bothered me to just make it to the 2:00 mark and I was done. Sad that he probably ruined it during his borrowed drive. These buses are classics and should be treated with respect. Glad that you noticed the shifting as well, no one else did. Take care.

      jmflyer55 it's a Detroit V, it is designed to run at high rpm. He's not smooth on the throttle and his shift timing is off, but he's not over-revving.

      Its a 2 stroke diesel. They need to run rpms. And they sound busier than they really are. I drove trucks (including DD 2 strokes) for 33 years. I thought he did well.

      @@thomasl8734 I could drive it smoother. I drove them for 43 years and could shift them up or down with two fingers, with or without the clutch. Not many can drive a crash box correctly, and this guy was a bit rough, but he had the general idea. I have seen a lot rougher shifting, and a lot smoother as well. I'd be happy to give lessons.

    As far as I know, you don't use the accelerator in between shifts unless you are downshifting. If you do, as noticed in the video, you'll grind the gears because the rpm's are too high.

    how many cylinders does the engine consist?

      V8.
      In fact it is a GM 8V71 2 stroke Diesel:
      8 as in no. of cylinders
      V as in Vee configuration engine
      71 as in 71 cu in per cylinder (about 1.15 liters per cylinder)
      There were other cylinder sizes and configurations in GM 2 strokes - many in fact.
      Here's some that come immediately to mind: inline 6 was a 6-71, then there was Vee configuration engines - 6V71, 6V92, 8V92, 12V71, 6V53.
      Horsepower was in the range of about 220 to about 550 for the engines I listed. Some maybe a bit higher ie the 12V71 and 8V92 turbo after-cooled might have been over the 550hp range.

      Thank you very much for all that valuable/scarce info ThePaulv12. And I MOST definitely agree with the author of the video: it was the BEST/most beautiful bus EVER built, although I never had the fortune of riding one, but I rode PD-4104s for many years. Their ride was superb. Beautiful both inside and out. Cruisin' along in a PD-4501 must've been riding in true luxury. And btw, I've been unsuccessfully tryin' to locate a 1/24 or at least 1/32 model kit for that magnificent bus. Can anybody guide me here perhaps, please? Greetings and keep it comin' :) .
